What's better? DVDShrink or DVDXCopy Platinum?

Which program is better? I've used both and haven't really seen a huge difference in the quality but does one have a better compression ratio than the other. A friend of mine says he copied with DVD Shrink and the quality was worse than DVDXCopy? Any help would be cool.

If your friend did it more than 6 or 8 months ago then he may have been right but I never thought the word "worse" applied to DVD Shrink. IMO, when DVD Shrink added their Deep Analysis feature it bested DVD XCopy. Perhaps I should say, when pple used Shrink's Deep Analysis feature the quality was much better than XCopy's.
Since the latest version of DVD Shrink (ver. 3.2) came out there isn't any doubt at all. DVD Shrink has been out-fitted with a process called Deep Analysis which is an encoding process DVD XCopy couldn't hope to have. Not only did the Deep Analysis improve the picture quality BUT they added a Quality Enhancement feature that boosted DVD Shrink's picture quality through the roof compared to DVD XCopy.
So there we have it, better encoding PLUS Quality Enhancement, and all for FREE. Even if DVD XCopy were still in business for $149.00 a program, DVD Shrink would blow them out of the water. Today's DVD Shrink is better than many $$$$ programs on the market today - Yes, it's no contest - DVD Shrink is by far the best.

I agree with ScubaPete. DVD Shrink has come a long way and it's FREE! I've used DVD X Copy and had problems with the burn process at times. When using DVD Shrink with either DVD Decrypter or Nero 6 everything turns out great. I've never had a problem with this combo although I now use Slysofts AnyDVD and Nero Recode 2 and I'm making copies in about a half out as AnyDVD works in the background while Nero Recode 2 does it's job. DVD X Copy is a big waste of money!!!

i had problems with X Copy as well, but whenever it did work, i was pretty satisfied, but after i learned how to use shrink (with all the features, DVD Decrypter, Nero, ect.)i was more impressed with DVD Shrink, although you might find it takes a while, its a step by step process while dvd x copy is a one button process, im going w/ shrink

Heh, heh, Believe it or not, DVD XCopy isn't a "1 Click" process, it just seems that was because of the graphics. I compared XCopy's ver 3.2 to DVD Shrink and here are my findings -
The difference between DVD Shrink and DVD XCopy
DVD XCopy clicks -
1, "Is this a rental or borrowed DVD."
2. "To use this program you must agree to respect the rights of the copyright holders.
3. "Movie Only" OR "Entire Disk"
4 "Start"
DVD Shrink clicks -
1 "Open Disc"
2. "Backup"
3. "OK"
Final Score
DVD Shrink - 3 Clicks
DVD XCopy - 4 Clicks
DVD Shrink = WINNER ! !

Yes, but you forgot the most important feature of DVDXcopy! It splits dual-layer DVDs (at chapters you want) easily! That's the only reason why I still prefer DVDXCopy to DVD Shrink. Who cares about the stupid DVDXcopy screen in the beginning! I don't want to spend more than 5 seconds splitting a movie.

Understandable. It depends if your priority is quality or convenience. I bought a huge Sony HDTV so I could enjoy the better quality of DVD over VHS. It's like playing mp3s on a high-end stereo system. (Why Pioneer sells a high-end mp3 stereo system is beyond me.) Why bother paying extra for progressive scan on your player? But if you just don't like the bulk of VHS tapes and enjoy the convenience of flipping through chapters in a split second, then I guess compressing a DVD to half its original size is a non-issue. Well, I also have lots of DVD porn, and I can tell you, video quality is a big deal. ;) So what I have to get up and change the disc in the middle of the movie. With the porn, I never make it to the second disc anyway. :oP

You can always try DVDFab - it does the same thing, DVD-9 to 2 DVD-5's with no screen -

well thats not exactly true 321 worked with my copy of platinum as long as the properties were similar to that of express.Now if you need clarification as to whether or not i'm exaggerating trundle over to that link for psidoc and ask the great man himself.I did but shrink is much better so i turfed platinum into the box that says 'rest in peace'

Okay, I did my own little test using both DVDXCopy and DVD Shrink on 2 movies - Mean Girls (Just watching for L Lohan's breasts) and Bad Santa. On both, DVD Shrink popped up with 'copy protection error'. So I had to use Decrypter first. Another thing - I lose all menu functions if I want to put them on one disk. For DVDXCopy, I can eliminate the extras and still keep my menus so I can pick and choose scenes (if the MAIN movie is less than 4.2GB). I'm not knocking DVD Shrink - it does very nicely on movies you want to put on a single disk, but if the main movie is more than 5.5 GB, I don't want to compress it to the point where I'm getting VHS quality. So For me, I will use DVD Shrink now for disks slightly over the 5 GB limit, but use DVDXCopy for the rest.

Well, you went way, way overboard with that statement - DVD Shrink can do the entire DVD with a better quality than what DVD XCopy can do, hands down, and it can compare the entire movie to your "movie only" with quality so close, "only her hair dresser would know for sure," -
It's abuntly clear you haven't done any work at all with DVD Shrink UNLESS you're working with a version from last year sometime -
It is senseless to converse with someone who hasn't a clue about the topic at hand -

True, I've been using XCopy for so long, I never bothered with Decrpter and Shrink. In hindsight, I would have used Shrink for alot of my movies which were slightly over 5GB and for bad movies (lots to name, including most recently, Bad Santa). I'm just stubborn and taking the lazy man's way. :)

I would take Shrink over xcopy any time,I have used both and have had much better results with shrink, no more coasters.When using Shrink I can remove all the extras that I don't want, so that I can use the least amount of compression.As for the menus who needs them. I prefer to watch the movie not the junk that is loaded in with the extras. Besides if you really want the extras you can always put them on another disk.

Actually with the new dual layer DVDR's (DVD-9) there is no need to compress a movie to fit to the disc. You can keep all the menus and extras which make jumping to a particular part very easy. In this case all ya need is a good program to remove copy protection and a good burn program. I have used DVD X Copy Platinum, DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter and my choice as far as quality and speed is Slysofts AnyDVD and Nero 6 for DVD-9 copies and Slysofts AnyDVD and Nero Recode 2 for DVD-5's. The speed is incredible and the quality is great! What more do ya want? If you're talking cost then DVD Shrink with DVD Decrypter win hands down!

I would think that DVD Shrink and CopyToDVD would be a "Heck" of a combe too. DVD Shrink is an excellent ripper and the fastest burner most anyhere would be CopyToDVD.
My 2 cents backed up by nothing as I'm still trying to decide which DL burner I want ( the "Better half" doesn't understand why I need 3 burners )

Ok I can't resist. And sorry ScubaPete even the 'cuffs' don't apply here :)
Now don't get me wrong I like Shrink , I use Shrink, I think Shrink is awesome!
DVD Xcopy 4.0.4.15, the RF version, patched, returns Ripper functionality AND the dreaded intro warning is GONE.
I have never had a bad XCOPY. I 'was' extremely annoyed at the "warning" intro and used IfoEdit96 to 'DeletePlayback' of same before I actually burned the media. Now you don't have to do that, with 4.0.4.15, patched, that is.
I still like Shrink, no longer use XCOPY, but I did feel compelled to get his information stated for the record.
Edited commentary: I say I no longer use XCOPY. I have no reason to NOT use XCOPY, but I like shrink and it reminds me every time I use it that I didn't need to buy XCOPY <rdrr>
