kind of a side note, but I am curious what kind of prices you get for Verbatims or TY's. I have been able to score good deals for the TDKs (about $8 US for 25) which is hard to pass up for the more expensive brands. Especially when all the games run flawlessly using the lesser priced media.

Well it depends on what you're looking for, dvd-r or +r? for +r i found a very very good deal on verbatims. 50 pack for 16.99 :D it was at sam's. For taiyo yuden i recommend going to supermediastore.com since they have have good media for a decent price. Rima.com is slightly more expensive but they are reputable as well

Hey everyone, I know I havent heard MAXELL DVD-Rs, exept for me. Yall should try them, I been backing up my games to maxell dvd-rs and they work perfect.

SONY 710A BYX4 (current firmware) DVD/CD Dual Layer burner
Taiyo Yuden/FUJI 8X DVD+R, Maxell 8X DVD+R, Verbatim 8X DVD+R, SONY 8X DVD+R (all medias are "MADE IN JAPAN")
NOTE: to all newbies, whatever you plan to get for your future (next) blank medias, just stay away from "Memorex, Princo, Prodisc, and any cheap and unknown brands". This will definitely keep you out from getting coasters and its misery. Taiyo Yuden/FUJI, Maxell, Verbatim and Sony is the way to go -- make sure it says "MADE IN JAPAN". These are known to be the best medias in the market, or perhaps it's in the top first class in pertains to today's DVD-R/+R media technologies. Just a friendly reminder note to share that's all.

alkohol, my verbatim dvd+rs say that they are made in taiwan... are these fakes? i bought them at sam's club

i have sony rw dw u55a
media rank:1.sony (they work incredibly well)
2.tdk
3.verbs
4.(tie)maxell and philips
the most important fact about dvdr quality is its compatibilty with your individual burner.as you can see sony works good with sony as well it should.and as a side note,all media have worked pretty good.none were so bad that they didnt work at all.

I never said that they're "fakes" and I never said that "Made In Taiwan" is bad either, so don't you go worry here mate, alright... :-) cheers now. Verbatim dvd+r are top notch media (MCC - Made In Taiwan), they're as good as Taiyo Yuden/Fuji (MIJ), Maxell(MIJ) and Sony(MIJ). Verbatim's older stock 2X, 4X dvd-r/+r medias are genuine and it's "Made In Singapore". Now the only Made In Singapore media from Verbatim is their DVD+R DL medias only.
In contrast, it all depends on the individual's preferences. Personally, I prefer the TY/FUJI 8X DVD+R, Maxell 8X DVD+R and SONY 8X DVD+R (all MADE IN JAPAN). I have burned/backed up 600 disc or plus using TY/FUJI, 400 Maxell, 300 SONY and somewhat 40 Verbatim, and they all back up and play flawlessly.

then i dont think my problem is media.. because if verbatim is good media, and i still get choppy cutsenes, its probably something else.
Psychonauts plays HORRIBLY, in some cutscenes the sound doesnt even play at all!

adjust your burn speeds to get the game to work.also clean your ps2 lens.alot of people dont think this is necessary(they are also the ones having alot of trouble with backups) but it can help if just by elimenating your lens as the problem.
how many times have you seen someone change media sometimes as many as three times and still not get their backups to work?and they never once thought to clean their lens.

♦ Burner: Sony DRU-720A
♦ Blank Media: Taiyo Yuden (DVD-R47VAL600SK) 4X DVD-R Media 4.7GB Silver Lacquer (TY02), I buy mine from meritline.com for 32.99/100.
♦ Only use DVD Decryter read/write @ 4x, when I have problems I use Alcohol (rare)
♦ I try to rebuild all my backups
♦ Excellent load times, and flawless play
♦ No coasters up to this point

i tried that but i cant get the god damn screws off. The 4 tiny screws on the drive tray, i tried like 10 diffeernt screw drivers and none of them can get a grip. wtf?

allways used princo disks the white ones and never had a problem. was allways burning at 4x speed. then tried burning at 2x on lots of peoples advice had no success with that. have smd2.0 and slide card original ps2 (getting old but still works.) now all of a sudden the life of my beloved princos has expired, and games that would run perfectly now dont load.(disks not scratched)
so i can say that princos may work great for a while they WONT last switched to sony brand and so far so good. point is stick with what works best 4 you!

you guys seem to be missing the point sometimes.
"i like verbatim" - well, which ones? the MCC or CMC ones? as verbs are made by 2 companies (not themselves)
most ppl know that CMC are about the worst disks you can buy wheras TY and MCC are the best.
the golden rule is not to go soley on brand but on MID (media ID) as that is the crucial thing.
some cheap brands use quality manufacturers - for example maxell often use TY.
best bet is to be informed, ask in the DVD media forum (they know their shit)
i personally use TY and traxdata as traxdata is made by ritek and their a1 disk, and TY are just used for backups i will use over and over again.

That's why I only allowed TY/Fuji, Maxell and SONY (all 8X DVD+R "MADE IN JAPAN") near my dvd burner period. As for Verbatim, it's a good quality media, but I rarely use them, except for its DVD+R DL media only. MCC is good and genuine, CMC is crap.

I have been using TDK 8x DVD+R's for quite some time now and those run decent, except for with games that load in real time.
I recently bought two new sets of DVD-Rs, after hearing that the -R format runs better on PS2, and i am here to tell you, this was not the case with my PS2. I bought verbatim DVD-Rs (the ones with the movie reel on them), and a pack of the normal 16x verbatim DVD-Rs. These didn't even get past the first screen once the game loaded with swap magic, and now i am back to TDK 8x DVD+Rs. If anyone has any other suggestions as to what type of media i should try, please pass the word.

Media: PRO-DATA DVD-R and UNBRANDED (The serial starts with YJ-*****...ect)
Loading Times: For PRO-DATA - Wokrs fine, and loads as fast as normal retail/original ... For UNBRANDED YJ- on certain games it takes a long time (ex: NCAA Football 06) NCAA Football 06 for PRO-DATA = Very fast loading times, and UNBRANDED YJ takes a lot longer.
DVD Burner: SONY DVD RW DW-D26A
Do you think PRO-DATA is the right media for my PS2 V12?

95% of TDK 8X DVD+R are good media, however, some are not quite good and it vary from time to time. I, myself, have had a few bad backed up with TDK 8X DVD+R in the past. I wouldn't say that TDK is a bad brand because I know that they're quite good and I've used them sometime ago; so I would never "dare" to say that they're bad.
I, on the other hand, prefer the Taiyo Yuden/FUJI 8X DVD+R (Made In Japan), followed by Maxell 8X DVD+R (Made In Japan) and SONY 8X DVD+R (Made In Japan). Especially, I use TY/FUJI and SONY for dvd movies, Maxell and some FUJI for PS2 games. They all backed up flawlessly -- even if my PS2 v9 can easily play both -R/+R, I find it easier and better to use the +Rs for my system. Not only that, but evidently you can booktype the settings into a DVD-ROM format, so any of your friends can play the backed up game easily on their older model system.
In addendum to your comment about the Verbatim 8X DVD-R, I can't really say that either it's an operator's fault or it's the batch you've got. I can tell you that Verbatim (its manufacture id starts with: MCC) is one of the top class media that's in the market today, it's probably next to TY/FUJI and Maxell in regards to quality and performances. Their older/earlier stocks that came with 2X, 4X and some 8X DVD-R/+R (MADE IN SINGAPORE) are genuinely one of the best media you can find in the market. However, it will be tough to find those rare "Made In Singapore" blanks due to the discontinued of manufacturing. Now you'll only see the Verbatim 2.4X DVD+R DL "Made In Singapore" in the stores -- this, I can assure you that it's one of their genuine and finest products ever made. Beware though, they do have a few bad batches out there that's code with "CMC"in the regular 8X DVD-R, so watch out for that. Other than that, just use whatever that floats in your boat. The choice is yours to make, your call, your money.

I've never heard of "PRO-DATA" before, so if you feel that it perfectly is suitable for you PS2, then continue to use it. However, I must warned you on any of those "unknown brands" that it will eventually fade out, becomes jittery, will freeze, won't load, etc. in due time. Next thing you kow, it's "scrapped".
The only medias that gets to see my dvd burner are TY/FUJI, Maxell, Sony (all 8X DVD+R MADE IN JAPAN) and Verbatim DVD+R DL media (Made In Singapore).
