yeah, its simple. the products in these systems are pretty cheap since sony produces alot of the parts or gets them in huge wholesale. the drive probably cost them 100 bucks.

But they all do sort of the same thing, and that is rearrange what you thought was real, and they remind you of the beauty of very simple things. You forget, because youre so busy going from a to z, that theres 24 letters in between... You turn on... tune in... and you drop out...

Just in case that theoretical hack works (ie using u'r ps3 brd drive on u'r pc to make make disk images for back ups) just remember two things:

1 You saw it first on AD.

2 All XyQo baby ;)

but others have done such an action on other consoles with similar compatability, i.e. xbox. you were not the originator of the idea.

Your in New Zealand like me aye? the copyright laws here are absolute crap, we're not even technically allowed to copy music onto Ipods and stuff let alone backup up DVDs, even for personal use.

The reason the first version of HD discs are copyable is because they forgot macrovision, which is why is they same reason you cant take screenshots, Anubis. This has been fixed now.
The copying of the games will be a huge cost, that wont really be worth doing for a long time after the system is hacked. It will most likley be a firmware hack like the 360.
I thought that that new chip was or movies only and would have nothing to do with games. After the response to Sonys other protections in its music i think they will go for a more user friendly copy protection, much like the xbox's unreadable discs.

You just need anything that will bypass/remove macrovision, not really sure what programs do it i know AnyDVD would remove it but other than that...

Do you guys know how exciting and challenging it is for hackers to hack something new??? I give it a few months and they will find something either with the hdd or mod chip

It's technology it's meant to be hacked!!!

but with resistance pushing the limits on the 25gb bd, and lair planning on needing a 50gb bd, i cant imagine in time how xbox 360 games will frail in comparison to the imense levels and hi def tectures, aswell as extras, on the ps3. lair said each of their levels is atleast 4gb, and they laugh at the 360 that if they want nice expansive levels like that they only get 2, and then 500 megs left for game data.

im saying what i've read from articles and from factor 5's (lair's developer) interview about the ps3 on why they prefer the ps3.

This is interesting from Engadget

"The drive can be upgraded, although not on any official basis (read: YMMV, do so at your own risk, you may void warranty, etc.)."

may void? but thats unliekely. it would not be logical unless changing the hdd required open the whole ps3.

That probably just means if you broke it trying to upgrade that would void the warranty.

If anyone believes that it is not possible to copy a ps3 game, they just plain ignorant. Most of the people that come up with ways to copy and mod game systems are more intelligent than people who actually created them. I give it a matter of months until someone comes up with a way to easily copy ps3 games. Blu-ray prices are going to go down, chips are irrelevant, and there is nothing anyone can do to prevent the inevitable.

sure ps3 games can be ripped and used, but the overall cost is equal to buying the games themselves.

Well here's my theory on the PS3 and bootlegging games.

1) There's already giant security holes in the PS3. Most of the people who are going to mod or hack the PS3 have picked up on this stuff. A few examples:

Installing Linux. The way to install Linux on PS3 borders on pointing out an exploit. You use a patch file that you burn to the disc in a special set of folders, which enables Linux to run off of CD, DVD, Memory stick, or even BD-Rom itself. This opens up a huge door to copy the games, just by allowing third party software to run.

The Hard Drive. This is somewhat explains itself. Hard drives are versatile enough to allow just about any sort of software exploit to occur.

Upgradeable Firmware. Again fairly self explanatory. Hacked sets of firmware (PSP style) are a huge window of opportunity for bootleggers. Of course that is if there's no hardware based security that negates any use of firmware hacks (aka chips on the discs.) The chips on the disc idea is good by Sony but I doubt it'll be implemented any time soon, that sounds awfully expensive.

2) Sony's idea of stopping bootlegging is by driving up the system requirements for making the copies themselves (Blu-ray with PS3, DVD with PS2.) What they fail to realize is that eventually PCs will get caught up. I have yet to hear of a totally copyright protected game, movie, or program. And where there's a will there's a way.

3) Lastly, if you really like the game you got your hands on, (be it by whatever means) please do support the development of new games. It's the only way to sift between good stuff and garbage.

the xbox360 got hacked in a few months !!HAHA MICROSOFT !!

sony are much better at stopping piracy then microsoft,,

the reasons for microsoft being rubbish

--orignal xbox had a exploit in a game and was so easy to softmod!!!
--xbox360 got hacked in a month !!

the reasons for sony being good :
-- to run homebrew on the ps1 you had to open it and chip it !! no flash or softmod
--you can easily brake the ps2 with the swap magic !!!

SO THE PS3 IS GOING TO BE REALLY HARD !!!

Someone at this point would have to come out witha HDloader type software for the PS3 ( You should be able to use the HDLOADER Now for PS2 games on the PS3)

Use the PS3 ver of Hdloader to install games to the HD just like you can with the PS2 ver

? is how long do you think it would take to install a game to the Hard Drive and granted you would need a huge hard drive to install a decent library of PS3 games

I don't see anyone compressing games down to DVD5 or DVD9 anytime soon
