Hello,
I just want to know if somebody has experienced something like this. I have an xbox 360 and I bought it on November 2007 and it's supposed to be one of those that don't suffer the red ring of death as much as the initial ones. Anyway today I was playing halo when all of the sudden I got a call on my cellphone which I left charging on the station dock next to my 360 and my tv. My tv started having this weird interference and then suddenly my 360 started to show 4 red lights and one second later it showed 3 flashing red lights and the tv went blank. So I got kinda scared cause I know about the RROD so I didn't know what to do except shutdown the xbox. I removed the iphone from that area and immediately turned on the xbox and it worked like if nothing happened. I have also had this problem when watching tv, if the iphone is near the directv cable cord, when I get a call the sound and image in the tv gets really scrambled up like if you were watching a scratched DVD to the point the image freezes up. So I think (and hoping) that when I got my call today the iphone made some kind of interference with the AV cable causing the 4 lights and then something else happened and they became the 3 lights of RROD. I know the iphone causes a lot of interference, but damn, if this thing caused the xbox to go crazy... it's just to much interference.
Well I just hope this was the cause of the temp RROD and not something else inside the xbox. After that, I left and my brother stayed playing halo and since then it hasn't showed any more "lights". So has anybody seen a case were interference causes the xbox to show the lights?

Has anyone figured out what error code 0101 means yet? I have a dead Premium system which gives that error code.

What you want to do is take off your GPU and CPU heatsink and remove any old thermal paste from the heatsinks and the chips and replace it with Artic Silver 5 paste, which is what you should have done when you replaced the x clamps. That should help as the stuff that m$ put on isn't too good.

My 360 went 4 times. I bought an Elite and that was the same. I got sick of sending it off to Microsoft so thought about fixing it myself. I thought it looked too risky so got a company to fix it ***link removed by loco*** It only cost £30 and its running sweet now.

and if we get the rod again, can we perform the x clamp fix again? what is the limit to how much you can perform x-clamp fix?

basically all you can do is try the penny fix after/re-do thermal, and tighten screws/or the heat gun fix.

I was unlucky enough to get the RROD this weekend. I had error code 0102. I did the xclamp replacement and got it working today. I'll see how long it lasts.

did the x-clamp fix the first time which worked for 6 months.
i then placed the rubber pads on the memory chips(supposed to straighten the board)this lasted 3 months.
and now i have it again this morning and don't know what to do next any idea's anyone.
i am sick of this now is there a complete and final solution to this problem.
(lead free solder lol) what a joke

My x-box 360 elite got the RROD. After trying the do the code teast I got nothing. My dvd drive dose not open. I tried changeing the heat seeks with bolts and washeres. Nothing changed. It seems like I get the ring but the fan turnes on for a sec and then just stopes. Also no heat is emiting from the cpu or the gpu. I have no idea whats up but it is really frustrating.

What color is your power brick led? It should be yellow when off and green when on. If it ever shows red unplug it and plug it back in.
This could easily be your problem. I accidently shorted a xbox before, it got the rrod so i turned it off, unplugged it, plugged it back in and still had the rrod. So then i checked the power brick and it was red, i unplugged it, let it cool down a bit and plugged it back in. Got a yellow light and went green when i turned on the 360.
Anyway it sounds like a power supply fault.

Finaly a possible PERMANENT RROD (0102) fix
4 months ago i bought an Xbox360 elite on ebay with a red light error code 0020, and i fixed it by doing the x-clamp replacement fix. the system was working fine for about 3 months and just as i was playing at tht time the screen frooze and had to shut it down, after i turned it back on the 3 red light error appeard again and showed me the error 0102 wich had to be a bad solder in the bga's, wich results in a poor connection to the gpu.
There are many many fix tutorials on the internet tht might help you get your xbox up and running again but sadly all of them are just temporarly, ive tried reflowing the solders with a heat gun, but tht helped me for only a week or so. the second time i did it came back even faster (i think 99% of all systems will eventually get this error, couse of the constant change in temparature in de solder all because off MS bad ventilation and poor bga soldering.
Doing the x-clamp fix and by simply putting in a 12v fan might help your system for a while but its not sure how long tht might last couse of its bad bga solder even if you modify the casing and mount extra fans it will only add a few months or years at the most (like lots off people who might have tried these options as there last hope) the main board might still react a little causing the bga's to disconnect (cold solder joint) (0102) memory failure; one of the most common failures besides overheating.
i have done a fix myself tht has made my xbox working perfectly again for 3 weeks, 5 hours in a row every day.
To apply this fix 1st off all i had to find out how the memory modules are attached couse they dont have legs but instead are solderd underneath the chip (BGA), wich most xboxes suffer from is a bad bga solder.
one way is too resolder the memory models to the mainboard (using more or better solder). you can do tht by using an infrared soldermachine wich is way too expensive and i wont even consider spending more money in this piece of shit machine and who knows what might happen next.
Cheap way; the trick is to perform some pressure on the bga solders of ALL 8 RAMMODULES to keep contact with the GPU so you wont get a poor connection (cold solder joint)
1.dismantle your xbox, find a guide on internet if you dont know how
2.take everything apart but you can leave de cpus heatsink on for now. reflow de bga's on your main board (gpu, rammodules) by using a heatgun or anythyng else tht can produce up to 200 degrees celsius air, anyway find a guide anywere. (IMPORTANT; AFTER REFLOWING LET THE SYSTEM COOL DOWN FOR 30MIN OR YOU MIGHT RISK SQUASHING THE BGAS)
2.do the x-clamp replacemant fix, youll need: thermal paste(as5 or any), 8 m5 screws(flathead so you wont need to drill your case anyway otherwise is fine by me) 16metal m5 rings, 16 nylon/teflon rings. find a guide on internet if needed.
3.you need 4 pieces of normal rubber 4mmhigh, 11mmwide and 14mmlong for underneath the 4 chips. figure out where they would face in the metal casing underneath and glue them there, tht will give you the pressure for underneath when you tighten up the screws.
4.this for the above chips; cut of an old piece of heatsink tht will exactly fit on top of the 2 chips tht are still visable with the exact hight of the gpus sink. put some thermal paste underneath the heatsink and on top of the chip, as for now you will need to fill the top of the made heatsink with some soft stuf like rubber tape, (thts what i used) or a piece of sponge, tht so when the dvd drive sits on top of it with the case closed it will build the pressure on the 2 chips.
4.now for the 2 chips under the gpu heatsink youll need 2 metal rings both 1.75mm thick (i used 2 25 cent coins wich is about 1.75mm) (this needs too be almost exact in order the build up enough pressure both on the chips and the gpu and tht it wont break anything) figure out where they should face under the gpu heatsink and attach them ther with some thermal tape, make sure tht the coins are fully covered.
5.youre now ready to put everything back in place, just be careful when tighting up the screws to evenly tighten up.
am not sure this fix will help on any xbox but am pretty sure on most off them, couse its workin for me fine since. altough am not too sure how long this might last, i think ill just keep on testing and let you guys know what happens. If requested i can put some pictures online of my modded xbox to give some guide on how to perform this fix (pressure fix) NOTE: DONT TRY THIS IF YOU DONT NO WHAT YOURE DOING OR RISK BREAKING ANY SENSITIVE PARTS LEAVING YOURE CONSOLE USELESS.
Anyways good luck, if you got nothing to lose this might be the only cheap permanent fix for know.

wonderfull thread, the codes have helped me fix 3 xbox 360's so far...
and im one that hates paying for things... so instead of using washers and whatnot for the xclamp fix.... so i took the clamps off, cut up a few sheets of cardpaper stacked them up and put them underneath the mobo, then i used the regular screws... im also using a cutup rca a/v cable , soldered the leads to the pins on the botton of the mobo so i didnt mess up the plug and using a computer psu i had laying around
.. just thought id give my 2 cents of what i did to make the one i got for free from a friend work :)
