The ultimate RROD thread
I?ve tried to compile all relevant information regarding the RROD into one post, but if I?ve left something out, please feel free to add on to this.
First off before I begin, if you experience this, and your warranty seal is still intact call 1-800-4MY-XBOX and have Microsoft fix it for you. You are guaranteed to get a working machine back, and you don?t have to open or fix anything.
Microsoft has extended its warranty to cover all machines experiencing the RROD for up to 3 years after the manufacture date, so look on the back of your console to see what the date is (as of this typing all consoles should fall under this umbrella). Then either call MS or go to xbox.com and request a repair. I assure you this is the best method to fixing the RROD as well as the least painful.
Also in rare cases the RROD can be caused by the cord coming out of the PSU, so although it might still be in the slot, it may be dislodged and this can cause the RROD to show up, so before you do anything make sure this isn?t the case.
Causes
First let?s start with the different types of secondary error codes. This is basically used to see if the different types of fixes out there will help, or if you?re SOL.
1. First turn on the system showing the RROD and wait until the lights start flashing.
2. Then press and hold the wireless sync button, and while this button is pressed down, also press the eject button.
3. Now the lights will change corresponding to the first of the 4 digits in the secondary code. (4 lights = 0, 1 light = 1, 2 lights = 3, 3 lights = 3)
4. Press eject button 3 more times and record each number until you have a 4 digit number, and this is your secondary error code.
Now here are the possible causes/cures for each type of error code (keep in mind this information isn?t 100%, but it?s a very close estimate from tons of research)
0001 power supply problem
0002 Network Interface problem
0003 Power problem could be the PSU could be the GPU/CPU, somehow the console isn't getting clean power from the power supply.
0010 There is a problem with the Southbridge Chip usually dealing with how it connects to the mainboard (cold solder joint/bridged solder joints)
0011 CPU over heating - If you are receiving this error after disassembling your console make sure to all 8 of the heatsinc screws are tightened securely to the board/heatsink holes.
0012 GPU over heating
0013 RAM over heating
0020 (Not yet known, possibly overheating)
0021 This can be caused by two completely different things either:
A. DVD Drive Time out - Can be caused by problems with a firmware flash. This is also speculated to sometime be caused by a problem with the southbridge chipset on the motherboard based on how it connects to the DVD drive.
B. GPU error, generally caused by a poor connection to the mainboard (cold solder joints/bridged solder joints) See error 102 for more information
0022 CPU error, generally caused by a poor connection to the mainboard (cold solder joints/bridged solder joints). This can also be triggered by an error with the TSOP.
0023 (not yet known)
0030 Problem with temperature control
0031 (not yet known)
0032 (not yet known)
0033 (not yet known)
0100 (not yet known)
0101 (not yet known)
0102 Error in the "Digital Backbone" (CPU/GPU/RAM), this is usually caused by a cold solder joint between the GPU and the mainboard.
There are two theories to fixing this one deals with the "X" clamps that hold down the chips. The other involves re-Heating the chips. DO NOT attempt either of these if your console is still under warranty. If your console is still under warranty return it to the store where it was purchased or call MS to have it replaced.
[/list]0103 GPU Error this is usually caused by bridged solder points where the GPU connects to the mainboard. see error 0102 for more detailed information
0110 Ram error, this is caused by a cold or bridged solder joint on one of the Ram chips.
...
0200 (not yet known)
...
1000 Kernel can't be launched/signature in NAND Flash chip is broken! It could be possible after bad update. http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?sho...p;#entry4156375 This might also be caused by a bad SATA cable.
1001 DVD Drive Error, either incorrect firmware or DVD Time out.
1002 (not yet known)
1003 Hard Drive Error... It could be a problem with the Hard Drive itself or a problem with the internal connection to the hard drive, Try removing the hard drive and playing without it
1010 Hard Drive Error, Can be caused buy a corrupt or missing eProm. See also E68 above
1011 (not yet known)
1012 (not yet known)
1013 (not yet known) possibly a dashboard update error
1020 (not yet known)
1021 (not yet known)
1022 There is high chance it's a scaler chip problem (the "ANA" or "HANA" chip near the AV cable connection) it can also be caused by a faulty AV cable so check that first. In some cases it is a problem with the GPU and may be repairable by doing the x-clamp replacement (see error 0102)
1023 DVD drive not connected, connect DVD drive to boot
1030 This error deals with the Ethernet port's controller chip, a dead chip may not cause the error but removing the Ethernet controller chip does, it may also be caused by other Ethernet related problems.
1031 (not yet known)
1032 (not yet known)
1033 it could be cpu/gpu related or it could be psu related, not much info is known for sure.
...
1444 and up There is no "4" in the error codes four lights is a "0" go back and check your code again.

Fixes
There are tons of these out there so I?ll first start with the ones that aren?t good and then I?ll talk about the ones that actually work.
The Bad
The towel trick
You?ve probably seen this on youtube. This is a temporary fix, and by temporary I mean 5 hours max. This ends up doing more bad than good to your console as you?re essentially baking the entire interior of the machine, possibly melting something in the process. Basically avoid this method.
The Heat Gun trick
If you know what you are doing, and take the proper steps, this can be an effective alternative to having your machine reflowed or reballed. However if you don?t know what you are doing, you stand a good chance at burning the motherboard, or one of its components rendering the entire machine worthless.
This process requires a lot of attention to detail, as you have to make sure you cover all vunerable components with foil and make sure you keep the heat gun moving to avoid letting it sit in one spot too long, frying the machine. Here?s a link on how to perform this ?fix? http://youtube.com/watch?v=DVttOR_uez4
(This method will void your warranty as you have to open your console)
The Good
(These methods will void your warranty as you have to open your console)
These methods have been found to work effectively, maybe for a few months, but in the end 99% of all consoles will resort back to the RROD eventually.
The penny fix
http://youtube.com/watch?v=asTDsKLVexA
X-Clamp Fix
There are several variations of this method, some involving a drill, some not. So in order to give you the most options I?ll include both.
Method 1.
This is the method involves no drilling. You are going to need specific parts in order for this to work effectively, and here they are: (these are Lowes part #s)
8 M5-.80 x 10 Machine Screws #138433
16 #10 Flat Washers ? Nylon #139065
16 5mm Flat Washers ? Metal #138319
Artic Silver thermal compound

Method 2.
(this method involves drilling)

Prevention
Sadly you can't prevent the dreaded RROD, they are almost guaranteed, but since we have some insight on what causes it, there are a few measures you can take to ensure that you're console doesn't fall prey. This is of course if you don't mind voiding your warranty.
Thermal Compound upgrade
its posted in the post directly below this one. That crap M$ uses doesn't help at all, upgrading to Artic Silver or something better can go a long way in relieving the tension on your CPU.
12 volt fan mod
For those of you that are more electrically inclined, you can try the 12 volt fan mod. This helps a ton in increases air circulation in your machine, but the thing starts to sound like a jet taking off it gets so loud.
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=637955
Fan Shroud Mod
All credit goes to RBJTech for this, basically the tunnel that directs air from the fans to the GPU and CPU is flawed, and it doesn't distribute air that evenly. This simple mod fixes that.
http://rbjtech.bulldoghome.com/pages/rbjtech_bulldoghome_com/Xbox360.htm
Talismoon fans
You can google these, or look on ebay, but they produce more air than the crappy stock delta fans do, and they are quieter.
Case Fans
Lots of people have decided to add fans to the case of the xbox in hopes of more airflow. I don't really know how effective these are, but its a complicated process installing these as you have to cut the case and add a fan header to the motherboard unless you want sloppy external wires running from your Xbox 360.
Water Cooling
For the adventurous types, you can try water cooling. I think spending $300+ (which is what this costs) is a bit excessive to cool a machine that still might fail anyway, but there are lots of people that have done this, and there's a specialized kit out there for this.
Cutting behind the fans
If you cut the wire mesh directly behind the fans off as well as the same part on the case, you will improve airflow dramatically, however you are leaving your fans totally exposed in the back.

First off it's 1-800-4MY-XBOX (in the states).
Second, these are my tried and true methods. All credit goes to the originators of these fixes. And I suggest doing them all since you are in there.
1 side note though. The xclamp part is a last resort for me. I have found by doing the others it has fixed most consoles. But, I don't mind tearing back in to it to do the xclamp fix if the others fail. But that's me.

http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=618278
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=606431
Also of note: if you do the penny fix as well as the thermal paste together and your fans go crazy...or you still get the RROD, or both, it's most likely you have put to many pennies in there causing the mobo to flex to much. Taking out one penny may help. This I found out from my last fix btw.
Results may vary.

Hi my name is matt and i recently fixed my xbox 360 rrod
first of all i went to b&q and bought
8 M5-.80 x 10 Machine Screws
and 5mill zinc washers
i then opened my xbox 360 and took out the dvd drive and the fans and then took the mother board out.
i then took the xclamps off and replaced them with my washers and screws. i then let my xbox overheat to reset the motherboard and then plugged everything back in and it worked. its not as hard as you think it quite easy and im only 15:) good luck

well you can always try to send it in. MS used to fix them no matter what but they've cracked down on people sending in opened units for repair.
If I were you I'd sell it on ebay

selling copied games is illegal so unless you want to risk being banned or arrested you can't sell these.
for a 360 thats on the brink of the RROD and its been opened I wouldn't expect you'd get more than $75 for it and thats with shipping
