there are sertain things you can do but you need to start d/l a torrent then the d/l speed depends on how many seeds /peer that are in the swarm send you data you can't expect 60kbs if they are sending you 15kbs
some torrents are fast and some slow but youll know this already.
the best way to set up bt is select dsl/cabel slow and set upload to 14 to 24 no more.
if still getting slow d/l then you need to set ports depending on which site you are using certain site are blocked from using certain ports the one i use is between 41952 -- 50000. hope this helps need any more help and ill be watching this site.

kcc76 you keep advising everyone using BitTornado to use shadows client, but unless your an idiot you would know that BitTornado is the NEW NAME for shadows client and is the newst version, so infact YOUR the one with the bad client.

there are several steps to increasing ur speeds...1. if you are using a router and are networked you have to assign a static ip address, also all computers on the network need to have their settings adjusted. Then you have to open your ports in your router. If you don't have a router and only have a modem, many of them also need to have the ports opened, because many modems act like a router in regards to the port issue. 3. you also need to open your ports in any firewalls you might be running. Many people are not aware than windows xp has a built in firewall. here's a couple of links that will help you all out http://portforward.com/cports.htm this is an excellent site with all brands of routers and some modems, also instructions for assigning a static ip address are there as well as ports for other p2p programs and games http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/ports.asp this link will explain how to forward your ports for the windows xp firewall.
I'm workin on it

try and change your ports depending on where you download from here's a list
Direct Connect 411 - 413
Kazaa 1214
eDonkey 4662
Gnutella 6346 - 6347
BitTorrent 6881 - 6889
i use ports between 49152 through 65535 downloading form torrentbits they only let you use between these ports all others are throttled so change it to 1 of these and you dont have problems with any other site clients to use ports commonly associated with p2p protocols. The reason for this is that it is a common practice for ISPs to throttle those ports (that is, limit the bandwidth, hence the speed). so this might be your answer.
ps just check with blue yonder that things are working at their end, ihad that problem with my isp could only get 10kbs it worked out i was paying for 512kbs and getting 56kbs they put down my area code wrong.

right i'll tell you what im running pentium 4 3.4ghz 1224mb ddr 2700mhz ram running on xp i dont have a router xp firewall turned off using zonealarm pro as firewall using bt shadows experment ports 49152 - 49156 connected isp tiscali 512kbs
download speed 62kbs upload speed 32kbs depending on which site im downloading from if using suprnova download is somtimes crap 10kbs - 40kbs but this is because theres that many leechers not giving what they should. so basicly what im telling people is that i had the problems to and everthing ive said in this forum is what ive done to increse speeds myself
im no expert but it works for me and idont see why it shouldnt work for you

i use Azureus client downloading atm
connected to 2 seeds and 22 peers
running a 600K NTL Cable Modem connection
mcafee firewall plus with ports 6881-6999 opened
i have seen reports of people using virtually the same setup as me running 150KBP/S + !
anymore info i could have that might work to increase my speeds as atm iam getting 35kbp/s, but iam thinking that its because i have got 2 seeds....
...any help would be great

I've tried to follow the steps in this thread, but they don't match with my ... situation.
I am using a wireless connection to a cable modem and windows xp, and my download rates are beyond terrible. I've managed no greater than 4kb download rate.
I'm using GS torrent client, which lets me set preferences, but I don't notice any differences when i change the settings.
I can't figure out how to open my ports because I can't find any settings in my network connections that allow me to (1) specify ip address and (2) state port numbers.
I know very little about computers, but I can find my way around with some instructions. If you can help me, please do because I am only 0.94% through my download after 2 days.

the only way to speed it up it to forward ur ports...and there are only certain ports...the ports are 6881-6889.....and u have to be able to upload to get good dl speeds...and make surr the file u dl has alot of seeds...and ur internet speed itself has to be fast enough
AMD athlon 64 3200+
ATI 9800 pro all in wonder
Memorex dual x format
