The guide is what it is, and the information that pertains to this program is in the guide and nothing more-I did not include instructions for the additional add-ons such as the 1.50 kernel or the 3.90M33-2 update as it is not included in the UPMS installer program.
You can however, add your updates manually to your memory stick via the MUX 2.1 program that is included-I posted instructions on how to use that on about page 20. There have not been many requests for help with that program anyway as once you get your psp running 3.80M33-5 via the DCv4 you can just run network update in your psp to have the latest cfw. Its a program that is geared for people like myself who perform numerous upgrade/downgrades in a week, and it streamlines the process-eliminating the need for swapping memory sticks just for updates that are a different version.
As far as whether or not you need to add the 'UPDATE.PBP'?-Its optional, and it makes no difference if you follow the advice of the installer and exit out of it to add it yourself (even after writing the IPL) or letting the installer just make a copy for you..As far as time goes- It would take about the same amount of time to exit the installer, hook your psp up to your computer and start the USB connection as it would to just let the installer do it for you.
You made mention in an earlier post that you used a 128MB memory stick and were having problems with it? The guide calls for a minimum of 256MB to successfully create a UPMS. Although it sounds like you got it worked out by using a different memory stick, so thats good.

When you created the memory stick, which option did you choose from step#1? You should use the 'sleep-fix' if you didn't already...
Also, what happens when you just insert your battery without the memory stick inserted, does your green power light come on and show a blank screen?
The volume issue you are having is more likely hardware related which would require you to open your psp and either clean the contacts on the button bar, or replace that bar altogether. You may just have some cookie crumbs lodged in there or something...

Easy there shooter, when you can make something this complicated this easy, and still think of every possible question someone might come up with then by all means I await your thread.(or should I say single post as no more will be needed right?)
That is why this is an ongoing discussion, to help those who don't quite get it.

I picked the third option on step one. The psp stays black with out the memory stick when i start it up. I literly took the hole psp apart and cleaned it. I also started the psp with the Home/volume/start/select button board ribbion cable disconnected I flashed the psp and the volume did the samething. Any idea's why im haveing this problem.

Flash1 holds all of your system settings. like your wallpaper of choice, your PSP user name, Network settings, Flash player and other settings. On here you will find a config.se which is the file that holds the settings for the "recovery" menu. If you delete this file then you will be resetting the settings for the recovery menu.
PsP#1 : 2.01>3.71M33-4>3.80 M33-5
PsP#2 (Slim) : 3.80>3.90M33-2 All hail the UPMS Stck
If you need a UPMS Stick go here and then go here :-) *As recommended by January39

hi, good to know this works but i have a problem
i can't boot into ultimate loader properly (doesn't come up)
i dont know what i did wrong but i installed u.p.m.s fully and it said,
You have Successfully Installed
Press X to go to main menu
i press X and go to main menu and it says "Memory stick cannot be read. Go to settings, system settings... and format"
i manually switch off and take the memory card out, put it back in and hold L as it says. i then put pandora battery in and all lights go on, the memcard, wlan, and power. after a few seconds, after i let go of L, and the lights stay flashing. if i dont press the L button at all, the psp goes into XMB.
These are the steps i took.
Step#1-Select the 'sleep fix Multi-IPL' option
Step#2-Backup your eeprom, then create Your battery
Step#3-Install UPMS with utilities (slowest)
i didn't do anything else.
please help me
many thanks.

i think you have not yet done the 'Magic memory stick' but your pandora battery is done...so you have to do the 'Magic memory stick' again..

You need to use the Format Memory Stick option within UPMS, removing your card when asked to do so by it.
The boot partition is to small to hold the custom IPL, that is why it's corrupting.
Please when people have a problem you must post more information like the PSP you are using, people who are trying to help you out don't know if you using a Fat or Slim & Lite and these both have different boot procedures.
UPMSInstallerV3r3 was released the other day so I would use this version now.
Thanks

Do you have a Fat or Slim psp, also do you have a pandora bat and ms set.
If you do have all of the above and your on a slim then do this.
Remove bat
put mms in slot
push power switch down to hold
hold left trigger
insert battery
Slim should startup then shutdown.
Remove bat
push power switch to normal
hold left trigger
insert battery
ultimate loader should now boot.

How are we supposed to make a magic stick if CFW is required? And to downgrade, a pandora battery is needed as well, which also requires CFW. and the pandora requires the magic stick, does it not?
I guess my question is, how is it possible to downgrade an official FW PSP if everything requires CFW?
