bevester here is what i suggest.

1. remove Zone Alarm (and don't look back).
2. get your router back on your network (your router should have a built in firewall that takes the place of zone alarm).
3. go through the instructions i provided on page 26.

let us know...

I agree with Punisher. It seems like most of the causes for lowid are caused by software rather than hardware, i,e Windows firewall, Norton, Zone Alarm etc....

OK guys, I'll give it a shot. One question though - if i rely on my routers firewall rather than Zone Alarm or similar, I'd have to be a bit more savvy with port forwarding/blocking wouldn't I? Zone Alarm etc tells you when something is trying to access the Internet and allows you to make a choice. How would I know using the router's firewall?

bevester depends on your router. my newer router has logging, although, i admit i don't know how accurate it is. i have the choice to enable/disable.

like i've said before, you might have to change the way you are used to doing something to achieve a highID.

also, for the past 7 years i have been relying on windows security and a router with NAT to protect my system and so far have been pretty safe. However, i also realize there's always a possiblity i can still be hacked. but 7 years is pretty good.

If you are unsure of how well your router will protect your net/computers you might want to consider a new router with newer firewall protection.

check to see if you have a firmware upgrade for your router too.

whether you like winxp firewall or not i would continue to update the critical updates to aid in protection as well.

Here's where I stopped: I typed the # 192.168.1.1 and when entered my username/password, all I got is the Windows Explorer with a blank screen. I'm using win 98 BTW.
Please, help.

almirfus what brand router? if linksys leave the username blank and the (default) password is: admin

if not a linksys you can google your brand and model router and search for default login.

i would perform a 'reset'. there should be a reset button somewhere on your router. reset it (i think pressing and holding the reset button for more than 5 seconds will reset) and that will change the password back to the default password: admin

Also, is there anyway you can upgrade to winxp? Win98, by today's standards,is very unsecure. i realize you have a router but should your router get compromised WinXP has better native security, etc.

One last thing, if and when you get back into your router and especially if you do a reset the first thing you want to do is CHANGE YOUR DEFAULT PASSWORD. Never leave the default password the active password.

I used to get problems like that on my D-link 704. I even had the most recent firmware. But I reinstalled/flashed the firmware anyways and it worked. The firmware gets screwed up on my router sometimes. Maybe this well help you. Cheers.

monkichi, sounds like someone's changed the default pass. you should reset your router by holding the reset button on the back for 15 or 30 seconds (try 15, if that doesn't work, then 30). this will reset ALL your current settings to default, though, so be warned, and be prepared...

monkichi ...and if a reset doesn't work upgrade (if available) your firmware.

come to think of it. on my old linksys router a firmware upgrade would reset my router and password. sitting here i cannot remember if my newer WRT54G firmeware upgrade resets the password. ugh! i'm drawing a blank. its too early to be thinking...

curses!!

you might try clearing your browser's cache (delete cookies, temp internet files, etc.), and try again.

If you have a qwest router or modem router, or any other router, try typing in 192.168.0.1. Also, I have to enter some IP address in the port forwarding, I entered my computers, it works, but what does it do exactly?

aliks0905 - what you are doing is allowing a program(s), game(s), etc., that is assigned with either a specific port or range of ports that allows traffic to pass through. Ports are designed to work with firewalls. a firewall (also in a router) blocks all (or most) port traffic until you configure port forwarding and tell your router (firewall) to allow that specific port or range of ports to allow traffic to pass through. the same thing applies if you are running winxp sp2. although, winxp firewall is a little more basic but it too can cause port blocking problems.

now as for the IP address. once you tell your router what port(s) to allow traffic to pass through the router takes security to another level. now you have to tell your router what computer on your network is allowed to receive that traffic. even if you only have one computer on your network you still have to enter it. your router's ip address is 192.168.0.1. i don't use qwest routers but if you have only one computer on your net i'm guessing your computer's ip address is 192.168.0.2. thats the ip address you would plug in along side the port address. your telling your router this computer with an ip address of 192.168.0.2 is allowed to receive traffic with whatever port numbers you entered.

NOTE: if you have more than one computer on your net and you are running DHCP on all computers your ip addresses between computers can change during boot-ups and reboots. ip address are assigned to first come, first serve. thats important should you enter your ip address in your router's port forwarding and during a boot that computer's ip address changes (again thats only if you have more than one computer on your net). if you have more than one computer i believe you can substitute your computer's name in place of the IP address. Or, another option is you can enter all your computer's ip addresses in the port forwarding option in your router, that way all computers can receive that traffic.

hope this helps.

aliks0905 - absolutely. most likely your ip address between the pc and laptop will change during boot-ups and reboots. one question is are the ports you are configuring in your router are they for both your pc and laptop? if for only one then you could use a static ip address and plug that into your router that way boot-ups or reboots won't be a problem. if your not sure how to configure static IPs the other option like i mentioned in my last post is to plug both ip addresses in the router.

did you add the vonage to your current system, or did you need to change routers?

I added Vonage to my current system, was not using a router prior to this but, I have been told that the Vonage adaptor kind-of acts as a one port router??

Hey guys,

I am also having a great deal of problems with my emule and lowID, so I am going to try out some of the things I have read on here..

just for the record here is my set up;

I am connected wirelessly to my Netgear WGT624 v3
My wireless reciever is a BT voyager 1040
my ISP is NTL
I have my static IP adress set up
I have tried to forward many different ports, with little success
In desperation attempts I have disabled my PC firewall (norton 2002)
and removed wireless encryption security, no difference

before this problem started, i could connect to servers successfuly for around a day or so then it would go back to lowID...?! so i shifted the ports around (on emule, then forwarded them) and the same thing happened again -> a period of HighID, then thrown off.

This was irritating, but now I cannot seem to get a high ID at all, very bizzare, I wish I could offer advice to people but I can only tell what I know!

the most useful site so far = www.portforward.com

I noticed how people have mentioned norton firewall may be the culprit so the next step is to get rid of it.

anyone know any decent firewalls that do not conflict with emule ?

Thanks for any help

...just tried Punishers fix back on page 26

IT WORKED and has made my day! :D

so anyone with a similar harware to me need not worry! was beginning to think it was the routers firewall, but not so, must of been windows blocking them despite the firewall being turned off (?)

I have had a few other complications with my netgear WGT624 v3 though - I would advise anyone to stay away...

thanks again punisher, and the rest
