valiance - A router is a computer networking device that forwards data packets across a network toward their destinations, through a process known as routing. A router acts as a junction between two or more networks to transfer data packets among them.

OK let me put this in english. For home use, a router basically becomes the core of your network. A router basically splits your single ISP's IP address. Without a router you could only connect one computer to your highspeed at a time. A router (with a built in switch) allows you to connect (NETWORK) more than one computer (I think usually up to a few hundred computers) on your single highspeed dsl connection at the same time. Also, a home router typically has a built-in firewall that hides (masks) your IP address from hackers and hides or protects everyting on your network. There are other functionalities a router does but thats the gist.

I highly recommend investing in a router. Even if you are only using one computer on your DSL, remember, the firewall is there to protect your network and computer(s). Routers i recommend are D-Link, Linksys or Netgear router. I don't recommend buying a cheap brands those only lead to potential problems.

hope this helps...

Thanks for the info, I'll probably get a router when my brother gets his pc so we could share connections. For now, I have a problem with lowID in emule. Im sure I dont have a router and did everything suggested disabling the firewall or adding the TCP and UDP ports manually to the firewall. I have only the default XP firewall btw... but still I get lowID. Please help! I was considering switching to another p2p because of this but emule seems to have the best files!

valiance don't give up on emule just yet. We see many lowid problems. with the help of all these guys in this forum we usually can help resolve issues. These guys are pretty smart.

Have you gone through the instructions i've posted in this forum? it sometimes does resolve issues, however, you really should have a router first to complete.

try these instructions. Just remember i wrote this with the use of a router. you will need to skip the sections(s) that deal with routers. follow them exactly no matter what. i've never had good luck with emule default ports. i changed the TCP/UDP ports and have success ever since. here are step-by-step instructions i've come up with that works for me everytime and others as well. i would try at least on a computer withouth wireless for now.

Here are the instructions
NOTE: If you are NOT using a router this may not work. I recommend using a router if nothing else as an extra layer of firewall protection.

this might actually work only if your ISP is truly not P2P blocking.

In order for this to work you need to do every step.
This is a lengthy process. You may want to PRINT THESE INSTRUCTIONS.
1. Open emule and click the Options button on the Toolbar.
2. Click Connection
3. Change the TCP default Port to 4660.
4. Change the UDP default Port to 4670.
5. Click Apply.
6. Click the Test Ports Button. A window will open and display both ports tested successfully. But, if they don?t work it may only be because you have not fully configured everything yet.
7. Click the button that says Open these ports on internal WinXP firewall. Wait for the confirmation window that will pop up and then click OK.
8. Click OK at the bottom.
9. Close eMule.

This step adds Networking Services to WinXP.
1. Go to the Control Panel
2. Click on Add/Remove Programs
3. Click Add/Remove Windows Components
4. Scroll down and click on Networking Services
5. Click the Details button
6. Check the box for: Internet Gateway Device Discovery and Control Client (this option may already be checked).
7. Check the box for: UPnP User Interface
8. Click OK then click Next***Note***You may be required to provide your Windows XP CD.
9. Click Finish.
10. Close the Add/Remove and Control Panel Windows.

If you are running Windows XP SP2 you need to do the following. If you are not running SP2 then you can skip this next step.
1. Go to the Control Panel
2. Click Windows firewall
3. Click the Exceptions tab
4. Click the Add Programs button, Scroll down and select Emule. ***If emule is not listed then browse to: C:\Program Files\emule\emule.exe and select emule.exe.
5. Click OK
6. Click Add Port. For the name put Emule TCP and enter the Port 4660. Make sure TCP is selected.
7. Click Add Port. For the name put Emule UDP and enter the Port 4670. Make sure UDP is selected.
8. Now click on the Advanced Tab (next to the Exceptions tab).
9. Under the section: Network Connection Settings, Click the Settings button.
10. Check the list to see if you have two entries for eMule TCP and/or UDP if they are not listed then proceed to step 11. Remember, only do this step if neither TCP or UDP entries are in the list. If there are two entries in the list click the TCP option and edit it. Enter either the name or the IP Address of your computer. (If you are using more than one computer on your router you may want to use the name of your computer because your IP Addresses could change between other PC?s on your network during reboots).
For the TCP option make sure Port 4660 is entered for both internal and external.
Now Click the UDP option and edit it. Enter the same info you entered for your TCP (computer name or IP Address) and ensure Port 4670 is entered for both internal and external. Skip to step 20.
Start here only if the two emule ports are not in the list.
11. Click the Add button (only do this step if there are no TCP or UDP entries in the list).
12. In the Description of Service enter: emule TCP Ports
13. On the next line enter either the name of your computer or your IP Address (If you are using more than one computer on your router you may want to use the name of your computer because your IP Addresses could change between the other PC?s on your network during reboots).
14. For both Ports (internal and external) entries use 4660, make sure TCP is selected
15. Click OK
16. Click the Add button again
17. In the Description of Service enter: emule UDP Ports
18. On the next line enter either the name of your computer or your IP Address
19. For both Ports (internal and external) entries use 4670, make sure UDP is selected
20. Click the OK buttons to exit out
21. Close out of the Control Panel

This step is only if you are using a Router of somekind.
I have successfulley tested this using Linksys routers. I have not tried this on any other brand router. If you are using a router, other than a Linksys router, I recommend you do this next step anyway. Most routers are similiar in Port Forwarding.
1. Go to a command prompt and type: IPCONFIG write down or note your IP Address.
2. Login to your router
3. If Linksys click on the Advanced tab
4. Next click on the Forwarding tab
5. Enter the following settings:
TCP 4660 To 4660 TCP 192.168.1.XXX (your IP Address) Enable(checkbox)
UDP 4670 To 4670 UDP 192.168.1.XXX (your IP Address) Enable(checkbox)
If you have more than one computer on your network you can repeat step 5 and enter a second IP address. Here is an example how your router could look if you have more than on computer on your router. This way if your computer?s IP Address changed from .100 to .101 on the next reboot it would not matter because you have both IP's configured in the router.
TCP 4660 TO 4660 TCP 192.168.1.100
UDP 4670 TO 4670 UDP 192.168.1.100
TCP 4660 TO 4660 TCP 192.168.1.101
UDP 4670 TO 4670 TCP 192.168.1.101
6. Click the Apply button
7. Logout of your router.

After this is complete Windows XP should automatically install a network Gateway in your Network Connections configuration.REBOOT your computer. A reboot usually is required to start the Network Connections configuration.

That?s It your done. I recommend you reboot especially if you still are getting a LOWID.

Open emule and see if you can connect at HighID.
If you still do not connect it may be because you are using a different router. Remember, I?m using a Linksys router but, again, the settings are basically the same.

If after the reboot and still a LOWID i suggest going back through the instructions to ensure you didn't miss or enter something incorrectly such as a typo in the Port settings.

If you are still not able to connect with HIGH ID then i would say your ISP is blocking or something with them is a hinderance.

Despite what others say regarding my fix, remember, not all systems are the same. You have to find what works for your system. It works for me and for other?s I?ve helped.
Sorry, if this was not a help.

" I followed everythin except those that required a router.. I called my ISP (Im on Wireless Broadband btw) and they said they arent blocking any ports and that my connection is deirect. I also have a dynamic i.p.. help. :( Emule is my favorite file sharing app, it was perfect when I was on dial-up...

I even tried disabling the firewall..

hey valiance. sorry to here of your eMule woes :(
you mentioned that your ISP said it wasn't "blocking"... you've got to be careful how you word what you ask them. mine swore up and down that they "weren't blocking anything", 'til i finally found out that they "merely" LIMIT the speed of eMule (and BitTorrent, and other P2P services), and don't "block" it, altogether. you might want to call and ask them again, that's up to you, and if they give you any fuss about "filesharing", don't think twice about mentioning it's legitimate uses, like open source, and freely distributed sharewares.

you mentioned having "wireless broadband...could you expand on that abit? i thought you mentioned "DSL" earlier. what equipment do you use that connect you (your PC) to them (your ISP)?

also, be sure NOT to leave your firewall off for any extended period. even if it's just WinXP's "half" firewall, it's better than nothing as protection.

darkflux, I dont know much about dsl or wireless, all I know is that my connection uses a lan card labeled as Allied Telesyn AT2500TX on the box and appears as (Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC) on my device manager. Connected to it is Motorolla canopy antenna.

Oh and if the only way I will get emule to work is to disable the firewall I will, coz I have deepfreeze anyway. but til now I still get a LowID icon. Emule was one of the reasons I applied for broadband..

your setup sounds about exactly like mine valiance (except i have a router, too).

oh, and i understand your enthusiasm (i got hi-speed for quicker P2P,too), but keep in mind, that even DeepFreeze, as nice of a program as it is, won't keep hackers from getting personal info from your PC, or from hijacking your hi-speed. i live in a rural town, and it wasn't a week before somebody attempted it on mine [which was when i decided to turn OFF the wireless feature of my router ;) ]. DeepFreeze is meant primarily to keep unwanted changes on your PC (such as unstoppable viruses, and accidentally deleted files) from causing undue stress.

the point is, that once they (hackers, etc.) have ANY info about your PC, keeping them out afterwards is a MAJOR hassle. not trying to tell you how to do things (it's your PC), just sharing my experience.

valiance do you have any firewall software installed like Norton Security or ZoneAlarm? What antivirus are you using?

if you are not running firewall apps and not using a router AND you turned off WinXP firewall and you are still getting a LowID, like Darkflux, said it sounds like your ISP is limiting P2P traffic.

If there is no other software or device between emule and your ISP adding a router will NOT really help in obtaining a HighID.

One thing i might try is changing the emule ports that i use back to the default ports. some emule users use the default ports and get HighID.

let us know...

Hey guys, sorry for the late reply, a storm hit my city and had a blackout for 2 days. anyways, no I dont have any other firewall software installed except the one that came with windows. I didnt get any lowid when i was using dial up, so if my isp is indeed limiting p2p traffic, why is it that my limewire runs just fine and fast?

eMule and Limewire are on 2 different networks, and transmit data differently. not sure ENTIRELY why, but for some reason, LW isn't limited AS MUCH AS eMule. also, as i mentioned in an earlier post on pg. 30, Limewire doesn't keep the RIAA/MPAA from catching you if you share too many illegal filez...

not that I would ever do that *whistles and backs away slowly*

Hey Guys,
I'm having a lowID issue with emule I have a Speedstream 4200 series and a linksys BEFW 11s4 V4 Router, I have done all of the port fowarding/firewall stuff to no avail. I think the problem might be that the speedstream is also a router it has a address of 192.168.254.254, but I have to use the linksys to connect 2 computers, this setup has worked for me in the past, i just don't remember what I had to do to get it to work. Any help would be greatly appreicated.
Thanks in advance

driver23, have you tried connecting the DSL modem directly to the PC? does it get HighID that way?

also, do you have XP Service Pack 2? you should try turning OFF WinXP's Internet Connection firewall system. with a modem AND a router, you shouldn't really NEED it anyway.

also, you need to be sure that the modem is routed to the ROUTER, and THEN to the PC (i.e., NOT routed to the PC from the modem). and to make things alot easier, you should use "static" routing in your router's setup, and NOT DHCP.

please let us know if you have any more questions or info to offer.

Hi, I've been following punisher1's instructions.

I can't find the forwarding options for my router.

I have a Edimax AR-7064+ Router.

Can anyone help?

Before I got a router I had a High ID, so I know its the router.

Thanks

hey, olryst.
log on to your router by typing 192.168.16.1 in your browser's address bar. then enter "admin" as your user name AND password.

the rest of this is a DIRECT quote of your router's manual. i recommend going with STATIC routing for best results:

"3.9.1 Static Routing

"Go to Advance Setup -> Routing ->Add to setup static route features.

"The static routing function determines the path that router follows over your network before and after it passes through your router. You can use static routing to allow different IP domain users to access the Internet through this device.

"3.9.2 Dynamic Routing

"Go to Interface Setup -> Internet to select Dynamic Route as you need.

"The dynamic routing feature of the router can be used to allow the router to automatically adjust to physical changes in the network's layout.
"The router uses the dynamic RIP protocol. It determines the route that the network packets take based on the fewest number of hops between the source and the destination. The RIP protocol regularly broadcasts routing information to other routers on the network.

"3.9.3 Routing Table

"Go to Advance Management -> Routing to see the Routing Table.

"The Routing table allows you to see how many routings on your routing table and interface information."

if you'd like to check it out for yourself (with pictures), your manual can be obtained here: http://www.edimax.com.tw/download/manual/AR-7064+_M.zip

also, there's more info about your router here: http://www.edimax.com.tw/html/english/products/AR-7064.htm

hope this helps. anything else, just ask :)

You need to open the router setup pages and go to virtual server under which should be under 'Advanced settings' Try this page for more help:
http://www.portforward.com/english/route.../eMule_Plus.htm

Also look for the manual, I went to the Edimax website and downloaded the manual for the 7064sg+ http://www.edimax.nl/ once you have the virtual server page, just use the page above at portforward.com to set it up.

most manufacturers use very similar page designs for routers, and just add feature pages for the differnet models.

best regards Lee

Hi, I need help.

I have already looked online but I'm stuck on the final step.

I went to this site:

http://www.portforward.com/

and followed the instructions here:

http://www.portforward.com/english/route...er205/eMule.htm

Except when I went to setup the NAT rule, I couldn't.

They have already been setup. I can't add anything new, because my IP adress is already being used in the preset ones.

But, the TCP and UDP ports change ramdomly everytime I connect to the internet.
Also, if I use the ports that are currently used as the TCP and UDP, I still get low ID.

Now I'm not sure if I should delete the preset ones, and complete the final step.

Dear Punisher1, I have followed all you said upto window Xp steps about solvinf low id problem in emule on 26th september. I don't know whether I have got router or not. That is why I can not log onto router and can not follow your steps that followed after log in router. I am connected in the internet thr wireless (open access). The network name is linksys. Now tell me how I can check forrouter and follow your steps and get rid of low id problem which really hinders my download potential. Thanks a bunch in advance.

mansh2006 sounds like you have a wireless linksys router, although, i'm not sure what you mean by 'open access'. are you sharing (piggybacking) someone elses wireless router?? if so you will probably not be able to log in to the linksys router.

if you have your own linksys wireless router open your web browser (internet explorer) and in the address bar type: 192.168.1.1 (you do NOT need to type www or http://. just type the IP address. and then press enter. it will ask you for a Username and Password. Assuming you have never changed your router's password leave the username blank and for the password type: admin then press enter. that will log you into your linksys router. I have a linksys wireles router too. My port settings are located under the Applications and Gaming tab.

If you have at one time or another changed the router password and you cannot remember what it is you can do a router reset. that will change the default login as i stated above. hopefully you will not need to reset the router because that will change all wireless security and other settings you or someone else has already configured back to default. and that usually is a bad thing. if you dont know i would NOT reset your router.

hope this helps.
Let me know.
