sammorris depends on who you ask but typically no.
However, i would prefer using a separate computer for running software firewall apps. Basically, use one computer to run all the crappy firewall apps that is protecting the network. This way my downloading PC and game PC won't be affected by having another third party app installed but still be protected. Unfortunatley, that kind of app might be rather expensive. You typically see that in small to cooperate business.
Oh, yeah, all that and still be behind a router. thats just a little more insurance.

Punisher1... YOU'RE DA MAN!!!!!!! :-)
Here's what I found out:
1. It turns out that although you turn the XP firewall off, you still need to configure each of your network connections separately. This means the XP firewall is alive and blocking still.
2. Although I already did the same as you suggested, I did not apply it to all of the connections. Once I did (following your suggestions) it worked like charm.
3. I am using LinkSys as well
I wanted to thank everybody - and PUNISHER1 in particular - for your help.
Thanks,
Eyal

Hmm, the idea is though I also get a reasonable speed net connection. I've adopted the "Safe Data, maximum use" technique since 2002, (abandoned it temporarily due to having a RAID partition and am reinstating it later this year) of having a small hard disk for Windows and a bigger data Hard disk. The RAID doesn't store windows but it's a pain because I'd need to reinstate the software on another VIA chipset to get data anywhere else, so I haven't bothered reformatting yet. Next time round Windows is going on a raptor. With luck, 2GB of RAM and a Dual core CPU, Windows should load quite quickly, at least to start with! Only 36GB to reformat as well after each virus.

hmmm... I don't have much of documentation as I designed my system on my own.
Basically my system consist of central XP MCE pc which is the media repository and different devices (laptops, wireless media extenders, wireless audio bridges, wireless web cams etc...)
I just got my first baby so didn't have much time to document but feel free to contact me directly @ temp@eyalkattan.com. I think it would be easier to answer questions. As always... I think budget is a critical factor.... and I tried to keep mine as low as possible.
I can tell you that I saved lots of $$$ just y planing my entire architecture from head to toe.

wow, i missed alot in just one day! lol
glad you were able to work things out manta100. these guys really know their stuff, huh :)
oh, and the thing about "Open these ports on internal WinXP Firewall" being greyed out: when you start eMule, it automatically checks if the ports selected are being blocked by XP's firwall. if they aren't presently blocked, it greys out the option to unblock them (obviously). i read earlier that you unblocked ports 4660 ~ 4712, so maybe the ports you were trying to substitute were one of those? just a thought, i realize it's kind of moot since you've already got it working and all, just thought i'd mention it :)

couple longshots here, but do you have your Windows Network Connection settings set to "Obtain IP Address Automatically", or is it set up with a predetermined IP (i.e., 192.168.1.2, etc.)? when it's set to automatically get it's IP, when you turn off your PC and turn it back on, the IP address may change. i've had this happen to me before (i commonly forget the small stuff).
also, you might double check by logging onto your router (192.168.1.1, if it's a Linksys) and double check that your settings are the same as you left them. a neighbor of mine had a problem with their router's settings not staying (for some reason).
i'll let you know if i think of anything else.
good luck!

manta100 that doesn't make sense but then again i've seen some strange things working with computers.
i might suggest (if you haven't already) go back through the instructions and redo each step.
to further what darkflux advised do you have more than one computer on your network? if so that could be your problem. if you rebooted each computer your emule computer's ip address could change. you must open your ports for each computer's ip address in the router's port forwarding. See step 5 in the router configuration of the instructions.
let us know...

I do have 2 computers, however they both have static ip address. In addition, the router forwarding is using host name rather than ip-address. In all steps I verified that the computer in discusion has the correct ip address.
I tried re-doing the steps... and it worked. however....and now... to add more mystery, last night emule got high id. I left it running all night. This morning I saw a fatal error and eMule needed to close. When I restarted eMule it got low id (and firewalled).
but no change. As crazy as it may sound... I'm waiting for night time to try again :-)
Seriously, it looks like some scheduled process is blocking eMule during daytime...
As of writing this response... eMule is still on LowID

Hey, as of this time I have a mysterious article that blocks my net traffic randomly (even Limewire and Warez P2P fail to get a connection). No firewalls are in operation. You may have caught one of those, whatever they are. Sometimes everything goes through fine, but most of the time, lowID, connecting to server, and no connection.

hey guys, just thought of somethin' after the last few posts. some routers have parental or access restrictions settings to limit internet usage. either built into the router, or as separate software. you might check in the router's settings to see if somehow they've been changed. i was once informed about Windows' "Wireless Zero Config" program, which must be disabled in order to properly set up some wireless networks effectively. Windows is notorious for picking up "hitch hiker" programs along the way; programs that the user doesn't actively choose to have installed, or that are installed inadvertently along with other programs. many of these are NOT even listed in the Add/Remove Programs section. the only way to even know they're installed is their prescence in the "Program Files" folder. perhaps this is the case for YOU sam. just a thought.
manta, i think by "article" sam just means an individual program.

Sorry to confuse you, i have no idea what it is so i used the word "article" as in, a thing. It could be spyware, could be a glitch in windows, could be a virus, who knows? Maybe you have it too since we get similar symptoms. Mind you, mine doesn't like me web browsing some of the time either.
What gets me is I have no router, firewall nothing. Just AVG and a USB modem. Some might say that's a reckless approach to security, but anything else I've tried means I basically can't use the net, either no browsing, no emule or something to that effect. I make a habit of reformatting every so often so it doesn't bother me greatly.

manta100 a couple of things i found. Either one of these could be related to your problem.
Fatal error: unable to create socket on Port 4662
This error occurs if another application is using port 4662 to make connections. This is mostly the case when you use eMule at the same time as eDonkey without changing one of them to a different port.
It is not recommended to run both eMule and eDonkey or eMule and Overnet at the same time unless you have the (upload) bandwidth to do so.
Fatal Error while trying to connect. Internet connection might be down
The most obvious reason for this error is your connection is down, but it can also occur when your internet connection is very busy or you are using the firewall Zone Alarm which seems to handle many connections rather badly.
Could you verify the exact emule fatal error? Does it give any kind of codes or messages?

Punisher:
Nope, I am not using any firewall software. The only firewall I'm using is in my router (linksys). Also I only use eMule.
I'm going to run some extensive scans on my pc.. Sam may have a good point regarding some spyware.

hey Flip, did you try punisher1's guide on pg. 23? that usually solves most people's poblem's. also, if that doesn't work, could you provide a little more detail, please? do you have a DSL or cable modem, or some other type of hi-speed? what else (other than pun1's list) have you tried? wouldn't want to give you advice that you've already tried. any firewall software installed? did you try disabling WinXP's ICF? anything you can think of that may assist us in determining your situation would be appreciative.
sorry i sent that as a PM too, please respond using the forums instead, so that others may benifit from the steps used. thanx :)

When i play medal of honor online i got high ping because i share my internet with my sister which has the emule always on, is there any way to stop the high ping with her emule switched on? :S As i told before my problem is the internet that is slow, i cant get high speed on downloads from emule or DC++. when i noticied that emule was slow i went to the internet to search for help and i found this forum, and on this forum 1st page there is guy saying to us to go to some ip address but i cant go there cuz of the password lol... ty.

well, first off, you probably won't need Zone Alarm, since Linksys routers have a "hardware firewall" built-in. also, i've heard stories of ZA affecting HighID, but it's up to you if you want to keep it or not.
you say your sis uses eMule, too. is she getting High ID? you should log on to your router as you read before, at 192.168.1.1 . the default password is admin (leave username blank), and setup Port Forwarding using punisher1's guide, as i mentioned in my last post. be sure the ports you use match those in eMule's Options menu.
let me know if you need more info.

darkflux well said.
Fliptunes if you read up just a little on this page 23. May 2006 @ 09:24 this might help too. It is not recommended to run both eMule and eDonkey or eMule and Overnet at the same time unless you have the (upload) bandwidth to do so.
I noticed you are running DC++ (i must admit i've not heard of that).
Also, to further what darkflux said you must configure your Linksys port forwarding for both yours and your sister's computer. As it stands your router is either not configured for port forwarding or your sister's pc's ip address is the only IP thats allowed to forward emule traffic. like darkflux advised try the instructions provided. Look on page 23 18. May 2006 @ 14:29
One more thing CHANGE YOUR LINKSYS ROUTER'S PASSWORD!!! DO NOT leave the password default. I cannot stress enough how important it is to change that. Change it to something that has a much higher encryption.
let us know...
