The first time they change the encryptions on the movies then rip it4me will be just R.I.P. What a shame.

When I made a backup of this movie, I checked the completed file
before I burned. It appeared to have all the chapters working. When
I burned it said it was successful. I put the disc in and clicked
through the chapters just to make sure they were all there. I also
watched the last chapter to make sure it was all there. Tonight
I decided to watch this movie. There are 28 chapters. It played
absolutely perfectly till the middle of chapter 25. Then it froze
on my DVD player. So I took it out and put it in my computer. It
will now access to the middle of 25 and go no further. Unfortunately
I deleted the files on my computer and also the history. So tomorrow
I start over and try again. This is the first time this has ever
happened. Always before when I checked this way the discs played
perfectly all the way through. I guess you can't be sure till you
watch the whole two hours.

It depends on the extent of the change. When Saw 3, region 1, came out with the new heavier encryption, the only thing needed was a minor update of the FixVTS. It will be interesting to see what it takes to make RI4M disappear. I hope someone picks up RI4M where it can't be bothered. I won't mind too much if it's retail as long as the price isn't too high.

Just two programs...

AnyDVD 6.1.3.3. (running in the background)
Nero Recode 2, (Recode Main Movie to DVD)

Just select the VIDEO_TS folder.

No hoops to go through using several programs!

And what does that have to do with DVD Shrink? Wrong forum. :)

As for the number of programs, that's 2 you have. The only thing extra is a supported burner with Shrink and the controls are automatic through Shrink. So, that's 2 to 3. Doesn't matter much to Shrink users. In the past some releases have required ripping, even with AnyDVD, and the output then processed for DVD compliance before they could be transcoded or encoded. That's adding even more software with AnyDVD and CloneDVD 2 or Recode, another hoop.

So, using Shrink a person can get a good backup just as well as the retail software. I'll admit driver decrypters are a little faster when they work, with the cost about $40. I own both AnyDVD and Region Free, but have been using freeware the last couple of months for decryption.

Shrink is as good or better than a bunch of retail programs. That's why it's lasted so long. If it didn't work, people wouldn't want it even though it is free.

Well If I had gone as far as to shut down a prog such as ripit, I would make sure the next generation of DRMs fully incapacitated the program.

First, this forum is on the movie Pursuit of Happyness.

Second, what I stated is how I burned the movie Pursuit of Happyness.

Third, the author of DVD Shrink, (which hasn't been updated in years,) is the author of Nero Recode2.

Forth, since this forum is for all, including newbies I'm sure that many can appreciate a simplier solution.

Fifth, I was just yankin yer chain bud. Maybe I shoulda put a smilie in there for you. I really don't give a hoot. I own Nero and know how it works as well, makes a good burner for Shrink. LOL I usually use Rebuilder. Since the staff went through all the trouble of creating separate sections for the forum, looks like the newbies would start respecting the effort. ;)

There's nothing special about Pursuit of Happiness. Shrink or any of the other transcoders, i.e. DVDCopy 5, CloneDVD 2, or Recode, can get the job done if the decryption and processing are handled properly. Ease usually boils down to what a person is used to. The big problem for newbies is they're not familiar with much of the software. Shrink has proven to be an easy program to use. If not I don't think it would have hung around this long.

@Shardel,

what brand of media are you using?
What speed are you burning at?
Is your firmware up to date?

Firmware is up to date. Burning at 4 times on 8 times disc.
I redid everything just the way I did before. Read every log
very carefully as I went along. They showed no problems. So I
burned a new disc with another brand of media and got a perfect
burn. I've been getting good burns out of this group of TYs. So
I think it was probably just one bad disc in the group. I won't
be deleting my files until after I have watched the entire disc
from now on. I've been having such good results up until this
movie that I went one step too far too fast in deleting.
I'm going to burn this file again on a disc from the previous group
and see if I have another problem. If I do it will be file 13 for
all those blanks.
Thank you to each one of you who has been such a big help.

Good thinking and glad you got-r-done. ;) Even the best manufacturers can let a few flawed discs slip through and working with video will show problems faster than recording data.

Make sure all the software you are using is set on default, then it should work fine. I did this and had no problem coping it.

I've read thru the posts and don't see my situation specifically. I used ripit4me, shrink and got to my ISO file, but tried to burn with DVD Decrypter and 3 times it locks up at exactly the same spot and stops burning...loops forever. It's at 68% everytime. So, what do you suggest to complete a burn? Thanks.

First of all I'll suggest updating to ImgBurn. It's the updated Decrypter burner ware from LUK, just renamed. Then install this file in Shrink so the program supports ImgBurn instead of Decrypter. Just follow the directions included. Click Here for the download.

If you have the ISO on the hard drive, go ahead and try burning manually with ImgBurn. If you still have problems, do the backup over and have Shrink set to create the ISO and burn with ImgBurn.

Everything worked fine for me when using AnyDVD with CloneDVD with "Pursuit of Happyness" and also "the holiday," which gave the exact same error when trying to open with DVD Shrink with AnyDVD running.

I also tried creating the iso with CloneDVD (running AnyDVD of course) and then opening the iso in shrink = error.

Someone has supposedly tried the "Rip Video DVD to Harddisk..." option in AnyDVD and then opening that with shrink, which apparently worked.

I own both AnyDVD and clonedvd2 but have been using dvdshrink so long and have gotten used to it that I never bothered to use cloneDVD2. However, this time I had to and after playing with it - it is great but once-in-a-while I still like to reauthor and split a DVD movie onto 2 SL DVDs because I hate transcoding/compressing - I want the best picture possible - and dvdshrink rocks for doing that. I save the DL DVDs for my favorite movies and those with good extra features, etc...

Anyway, those are some options that worked for me. I don't know how anyone truly into ripping dvds can't own a copy of AnyDVD and for the extra little bit CloneDVD is obviously worth it. Save yourselves some valuable time and spend a little moola!

cheers,

sois

Until the selection dries up, I don't see AnyDVD as a necessity. I can usually find something to get the job done without having to rely too heavily on any one program. I've got more software than the ones pictured, but these are my current favorites.

Many of the available backup programs are up to date and capable of getting the job done with the heavier protection. Some releases work better being ripped and processed for compliance but most can still be done with driver decrypters.

sois,
Thanks for the info but when you rip using AnyDVD and CloneDVD did you know that the files are not 100% DVD-Compliant as the crap is still there. That is a problem that needs to be addressed by the creator of CloneDVD and Slysoft. Shrink needs the files to be structured correctly. That is why FixVTS or VobBlanker is used before the compression by Shrink. I own DVDClone but rarely use it as the quality of the finished product is not that good if the compression is over 15-20%. DVDShrink is fine down to about 35% but I'll stick w/ using DVD-RB-Pro as it is way better than either program.

Why pay for CloneDVD when free programs will rip the DVD to the HD and it will be DVD Compliant.

Well put.

The RB Pro with CCE SP is my favorite backup system. For the past few months I've done the ripping with RipIt4Me on the heavily protected releases and Region Free + DVD Decrypter on some of the others. Occasionally AnyDVD and some others got a short workout. If in doubt, I checked the Region Free/Decrypter rips with Shrink for compliance and processed with FixVTS when necessary. As we all know, the key to a good backup is getting cleaned and compliant source files. Once the source files are ready I usually do a batch job of ripped videos and create ISO folders for burning. I've got CopyToDVD, ImgBurn, and Nero. They're all good. I've used Nero so much I usually click it out of habit. I have a separate Nero Express Icon for the desktop shortcut because I use it so much. No need to go through StartSmart. RI4M, RB Pro/CCE SP, and Nero is my favorite combo. But I've got other toys waiting in the background for special jobs or when I'm doing a rush job for someone else. RB has done more of my backups than all the transcoders put together.

Thanks for the info pacman and mike,

As I said I never compress a dvd - ok, maybe on the odd one I will copy over the main title and compress up to 5% so I guess I don't need to be as fussy about shrink versus dvd-rb, correct? As far as compliance... hmmm.. How important is that? By crap being on there, do you mean extra disorganized files? What does not being 100% compliant mean for playback? I haven't noticed any problems with quality or playback ability in any dvds I've backed up.

I won't get off topic any more but if you could clarify that for me I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks again!

sois

PS when I created the video files for pursuit of happyness, there were a wack of extra VOB bup and ifo files (99 sets)- I am trying fixvts as i write this to see how it processes/fixes them. Ok, it finished and nothing changed.

The new heavier copy protection has a lot of bogus files. The crap is junk files added with the sole purpose of trying to confuse the recording software. The software looks for a file structure (DVD compliant) that fits within fixed guidelines. If the files aren't within specs, an error is usually reported. Besides CSS encryption and other copy protections, the new structural protections are causing the recording software to see errors that will play on a player but won't record. Besides removing the encryption and copy protections such as ARccOS and Puppetlock, the backup software has to make the source files appear compliant for the recording software, processing the files for compliance.

Not being 100% DVD compliant has more to do with recording than playback. However if the recording is done and the files aren't fully compliant, there's the possibility of visible flaws. I've done a few burns with error warnings and they came out okay. Players are more forgiving than recording software.

Light compression and there is little or no difference noticable between encoders and transcoders. Start moving over 20% and you start seeing a difference. I normally won't use a transcoder over 30% unless doing a trial or a rush job for someone else.
