So where are those AMD OC benchies?? I need some linkys you slackers... hehehee. ;) I'm really thinking about AMD on the next build for economies sake but I want to see if they will compare when it comes to DVD RB Pro and things like that. I don't game on the computer at this point so it seems that talk of that sort is almost moot for me. ;)

From that translated review, the Phenom II 940 seems to perform around the level of the Q9400 in some of the tests, and around the level of the Q9650 in the others, depending on the program. The difference between the 920 and 940 didn't seem very big either, so if the 920 is much cheaper, that may be the chip to go for, especially if it has similar overclocking performance to the 940. All depends on the application you use I suppose. This is certainly the most favourable review I've seen so far. I'm still going to reserve judgement until the CPU is actually released.

GM,
The link is in the PC Building thread as they are not overclocked. Just stock vs stock!

Also will these memory modules all work in my rig:

Best Wishes,
Sheeny (Sam).
Good to hear from you again. If you are overclocked it would be best to only populate 2 memory slots, rather than 4. I would choose 1066 memory so if the opportunity comes along for an inexpensive 1333MHz processor, you are ready. After seeing the prices in Australia, I'm not so sure. Here, you can get 2x2 GB 1066 Corsair Dominators for $69! There's also a $30 MIR, so they wind up costing $39 for 4GB of very good 1066 RAM! The same memory is $194 there! Ouch!!!

Maybe you should find out what limits there on "Birthday Presents" are, and get someone in the States to send them to you as a gift. I can't imagine there would be any problem with about a $40 gift. If I was doing it, I would test them first to be sure there were no bad sticks, and send them as used memory, as a gift. Can't hurt to check. Not at those prices! Don't be such a stranger. PM me your email addy so I can drop you a line once in a while.
Happy New Year,
Russ

DDR2 1066 Ram is really OC'd DDR2 800.
If you can get the known good stuff for minimal price, why not recommend it?

That memory will work fine with his board. I used to use 1000mhz RAM on my 956P-DS3 and I had to overclocked to higher than 1066mhz. Deadrum is right, it's all overclocked 800mhz memory anyway.

If you have a GA-965P-S3 like he has, you have to be sure it's the Rev 3.3 board. The Rev 1.0 won't do 1066 RAM. Actually it will by overclocking, but with an 800MHz chip, it's all but useless on that MB as it didn't have the native 1333 fsb. I was talking to him last night/this morning and his S3 is rev 3.3 so he can upgrade later to a 1333MHz CPU with no problem.
If you remember, that's how I wound up with the P35-DS3R, because my 965P-DS3 Rev 1.33 didn't support the advertised 1333 bus! It was fine with the 800MHz memory, but it wouldn't handle the 1066. memory bandwidth suffered too by about 30%. The rev 1.33 I had was a rarity in the US and wasn't the same specs as the rev 3.3 sold here. The 1.33 wasn't even listed on the US site!

Thanks Russ for your wisdom on these things. So what other (cheaper) alternative do I have to the Dominator, I still want the same sort of performance though and I'm not bothered by brand names!

Sam,
I know the original Reapers were bloody awful, but the new ones seem to be quite solid, minus the complaints that they don't overclock very well. Duh! were are talking about memory that's already overclocked 266MHz to begin with. They also have those neat heatpipe coolers on the top. Right now they are the best selling 1066 memory on the market. You know how these companies are. Look at crucial! two years ago they were the greatest thing since sliced bread until they changed their chips. now people in the know avoid them because of all the problems the newer chips caused. The GSkill are solid performers! :-)

Indeed, but there's also the term of long-term reliability, which you can never guess at. A company that has a good track record tends to win favour with me over one that's had a bad track record. For those who want to experiment, trying the new and potentially very good product is up to them, but for most systems, I'm very much a creature of habit I'm afraid...

You can when money is a big issue there. The prices for memory in Australia are outrageous. $194 for 2x2GB 1066 Dominators. $39 with $30 MIR here! Don't even want to think what the Kingston HyperX costs there! LOL!! :-)

Will,
It is outrageous! I'm sure shipping things that far is the cause. It has to go either by Plane or Ship! and then once it's there, getting it to some fairly remote locations. The population density of Australia is only 2.6 persons per square Kilometer! That's only the average for the whole country. It's far less than that in many outlying areas.

Hi Russ and Everyone,
I have the flu at the moment or at least it feels like it so you will all have to bare with me...
First off I've decided to go with 2x2gig of G-Skill memory that you recommended Russ as I've found a good place here in Aus where its reasonably cheap, not as cheap as you can get on newegg but not extautionate.
Russ is right the prices over here for computer parts are awful!.
Right, I need everyones valuble opinion on this one:

My wife and I both want a new case, and this one sticks out for us as a winner. I would just like to get some feed back on it from you guys as to what you think of it, ESPECIALLY you Russ!
Best Wishes,
Sam.

Hey there,
No, Sammorris is right, it's a very poorly made case and not worth the money. Many of them arrive to customers somewhat broken, so I guess that design doesn't ship very well. I was actually interested in this case a while back, but the quality issues and there not being any 250mm fans available at that time. I passed on it. Later when various places tested them they were very poor at cooling. My personal favorite at the moment is The Nzxt Lexa Blackline.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811146038
it's a very good design with good airflow. The build I will be doing shortly will either have one of those or Possibly another Cooler Master Cavalier, as even though CM discontinued it, there are still some available on line for cheap.
http://www.egoodz.com/product.aspx?pf_id=CAV_T03_UW $68.05 US w/Tax and shipping. It's the only thing I regretted giving up by selling my computer! The drive door is solid aluminum and can be reversed in less than a minute with no tools! I do like the Lexa blackline though!
I know the Xcilo looks sort of neat, in a weird sort of way, but the airflow is all wrong. Virtually every review I've ever read has criticized the cooling and they are not exactly quiet either! I would recommend passing on it!
Best Regards,
Russ
