OK here?s the scenario. The computer is 18 months old and I hesitate to say, has been working flawlessly. Today I tried to back up a movie using shrink, as I have done hundreds of times, and every thing goes fine till I hit the Backup button. The computer immediately crashes. Once it reboots, I can proceed as usuall but the next time I try to backup, the same thing occurs. Haven?t had anything like this since WIN98/ME. I sent the error report to Microsoft and they sent back a report suggesting it is being cause by a device driver problem. What would make my device driver change? Should I assume that this would be the driver for the DVD drive that is being accessed by the backup? I am also running AnyDVD and recently did the most recent upgrade but have backed up several DVDs without incident. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
XP home
Pentium 4 -2.98GHz
1.00 GB RAM
Two DVD writers one for reading and one for burning.

Hi summitboy
Did this happen right after you updated AnyDVD to 6.0.8.5?
AnyDVD is a driver.
Run AnyDVD in safe mode and see if that does the trick.
Or go back down to 6.0.8.2.
Others here have reported a problem like your's w/ the latest AnyDVD and Shrink. Haven't had it myself - tried it w/ Shrink today.
Give that a go and let us know.

summitboy,
One other thing you can try is to use AnyDVD's Ripper function and rip the DVD to HD first and make sure you use the FixVTS function to clean up the structural problems if there are any as the structure problems can also cause the program to crash

Thank you for the quick replies.
?Did this happen right after you updated AnyDVD to 6.0.8.5?
AnyDVD is a driver. ?
I am reasonably sure that I have backed up about six DVDs after the update but not quite positive so I will try going back and see if that is it.
?One other thing you can try is to use AnyDVD's Ripper function and rip the DVD to HD first?
I thought this is what Shrink does? I wouldn?t know the first thing about using that function.
?structure problems can also cause the program to crash?
Actually, the entire computer crashes. It?s like I hit the restart button. But once the computer reboots, backup proceeds fine without backup. Then when I try a new title, it crashes and reboots again.

Before you go back a version try safe mode on AnyDVD. Right click on the red fox - go to settings>program settings. Check 'safe mode'
If that doesn't do it than rip to the hard drive 1st w/ the ripper in AnyDVD. Right click on the red fox then pick 'rip video dvd to hard disk'. Open those files in Shrink under 'open files'.
Shrink rips to the hard drive too while removing the copy protection.
Keep us posted!

I am experiencing the same problem. I have been using AnyDVD with Windows Explorer to copy Video to my HD. It worked fine that way until the new update. Now it crashes left and right. I've found that if I reinstall Shrink it gives me one more burn before it crashes on the next movie I try. It is a pain having to reinstall Shrink every time I want to use it. What is the difference between AnyDVD regular mode and Safe mode? I know Windows Safe mode limits what you can do in Windows quite a bit. If it will still let me copy to my HD with Windows Explorer and I can still shrink/burn with Shrink, I'll be content. Any word on whether SlySoft is working to correct this issue for their next version?

Here is the previous versions of AnyDVD. Look on the right hand side for the prev. ver. you need
http://www.filehippo.com/download_anydvd/
ThornScar,
Have you updated your OS and did you install IE7. If so do a removal of IE7 and you will revert back to IE6. Some talk about that being the problem but it is not confirmed as to be the problem

This morning I tried to make a copy of a DVD containing data using Nero. As soon as I tried to open Nero, the computer crashed. I had not done anything to resolve the issue of my DVD backup problem yet so I assumed that since AnyDVD uses Nero to burn that the driver problem was related to that interface.
So, I uninstalled 6.0.8.5 and re installed 6.0.8.2. I have tried three backups in a row and so far no problem so at this point I will assume that there are bugs in 6.0.8.5.
Thank you so much for the help, you guys are great. Car.mike I especially thank you because I had deleted all the old versions as I never keep them. Guess I will from now on. Anyway, I was having some difficulty finding the old version. Then you posted the URL. Cool.

@Car.Mike
That's interesting about IE7 - I don't use it and don't have these problems with the latest update of AnyDVD.
Like an idiot I decided to check it out on my laptop well we won't go there - let's get say I wasn't happy - had to fix the problems it caused w/ Norton, outlook etc and was immediately uninstalled.
See this post too:
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?...e=7#post1613231
I'd be interested to know if the posters in this thread have IE7 - may help shed some more light on it.
@summitboy
Glad to hear you are straightened out :)
Happy Burning.

I have some version of IE6 on my computer but I use Mozilla.
I've done another backup so that makes four since I reinstalled 6.0.8.2 with on problems.

Well there goes that theory :)
I know MS made IE7 as part of their updates but when I saw what the update was I squashed it :)

binkie7,
MS came out w/ the updates the other day around the time AnyDVD updated. Some people had w/ DMA activated their encode times revert from 30 minutes to 2+ hours while it did not affect others. If your times go up then uninstall all of the updates and re-install them 1 at a time to see what the problem update was. I really think that it is the Malicious Software removal tool that was offered for update but others think it is IE7. Now if someone can explain how a browser can affect a transcode then I will listen but me telling him to delete IE7 was just a shot in the dark. I really think it is a bug in version 6.0.8.5 but rest assured Slysoft will fix it. I am just glad it did not affect any of my systems

Nothing but crashes with the AnyDVD update - I went to that link and took 6.0.8.0 - No problems now. I'm sure SlySoft is working on this. As far as IE7 goes - and I didn't - that wasn't the cause of my crashes. I have whatever came with my XP and don't run MS updates anymore. I got tired of them checking my legal copies every time I tried to do something. Get Firefox and use AVG Free for virus protection. Jack

lol - didn't affect mine either thankfully.
I agree Slysoft will fix it whatever the cause may be.
I haven't used IE in a couple of years - Firefox too.
I don't know what got into me to check out IE7 ;)
But outlook and IE do have some connections and that's where my problem was.

How do you "squash" an update from Microsoft. I have a the yellow update "icon" in bottom right corner of screen all the time now for microsoft office. I don't want the update. How do I kill it so it never asks me again, but does ask me about other updates (not to do with Office).

If you have ms set to automatically check for updates there are still some it will ask your permission for 1st like the IE7 update and the malicious Software removal tool Car.Mike mentioned.
I just hit cancel and that was that.
You can set it up so it MS always notifies you when they are available or turn it off completely - you would check yourself online for updates (don't really recommend 2nd option - just my 2 cents).
I have mine set to automatic on all pc's - I may just be too trusting :)
Open Control Panel. Go to Security Center>Automatic Updates. You can change it there.
I'm not sure about automatic updates for Office. I just go to an office app and go to help>check for updates.
You can click on the yellow icon and then cancel the install and it should go away if it's not a critical update.

Just got a notice from slysoft that 6.0.8.8 is ready for install. Why am I so skeptical? Think I should bite? No mention of any problems or fixes.

Yes I would update - here's the version history:
6.0.8.8 2006 11 26
- New: Added "Aggressive I/O Mode" checkbox.
Enable the "highly aggressive I/O mode" only, if you use software which
otherwise will not see AnyDVD's magic, like InterVideo DVDCopy,
1-click DVD-Copy or Pinnacle Instant copy.
"Aggressive I/O Mode" should not be necessary if you use well designed
software. Using "Aggressive I/O Mode" may degrade system stability.
"Aggressive I/O Mode" is not available and not required in Windows 9X/ME.
- Change: Removed "Safe Mode" checkbox
- Change: Improved "Jump directly to Title Menu" function (change in
6.0.8.5)
- Fix: Compatibility problems and crashes with some system configurations
introduced in 6.0.8.5. Sorry.

recentley i too had my pc crashing evertime i hit backup on shrink. Rebooted & was able to procede as normal. I didn't know what the hell was going on, thought mabe my pc was getting ready to take a dump. So am i understanding this right? The problem is not with shrink, it is with AnyDVD version .5? So if i install .8 my problem will go away? When the pc crashes it is a scary thing, like the blue screen of death. Had to manualy reset my computer. This goes to prove how powerful AnyDVD is. Hopefully the .8 version corrects this problem. So far as the windows updates are concerned, one day after doing an update my outlook express stopped working, haven;t been able to use it for more than a year. Does microsoft look @ whats loaded on your pc & if they find something that shouldn't be there take matters into their own hands & disable some applications. Sorry so long, just trying to figure this out.

I don't think MS can go just that far yet for all things on the pc (I would hope not).
For the outlook problem go to microsoft's site for a solution to your problem. Just type in the problem and you can usually find a solution.
You can also see if there is an updated for the version you are running (open outlook>help>check for update)
Well witenoiz confirmed it - for those having this problem w/AnyDVD - update to 6.0.8.8.
Txs for letting us know!
