I am trying to follow the guides but im getting stuck.

can someone point me to a clear guide aimed for newbies?

Do I open the disk in shrink or in decrypter?
Where does Nero come in because in the decrypter it has a "burn from HD to DVD" option?

I need simple steps ... do this, now this and so on.

Any help would be appreciated thanks.

Backing up a movie is a three step process...

1. Rip the DVD to your HDD using DVDFab Decrypter.
2. Compress the disc (if needed) with DVD Shrink.
3. Burn your new files to a blank DVD with Imgburn.

A guide really isn't needed because it really is just as simple as that.

http://webpages.charter.net/bacitup/TheG...k,imageburn.pdf

You can typically skip the VobBlanker/FixVTS step and go straight to DVD Shrink.

Oh so I only do half the process with the decrypter? Becuz it also has a burn to dvd option and thats what I was doing!

So I open it with decrypter, then select the iso file? and compress that in shrink? and when i hit back up i then select the option to burn iso image with nero?

thanks!

Don't use DVDD...rip with DVDFab HD Decrypter. http://www.dvdidle.com/free.htm

Correct.

Nope, Nero will not autoburn an ISO...that is why I recommended Imgburn. If you must use Nero then you will need to select your drive as the target, otherwise select ISO image file...then manually burn with Imgburn. If you look in my profile there is a link to Imgburn w/DVD Shrink that will allow you to autoburn your ISO with Imgburn.

Oh yeha really quick.... the only thing that happened that was not mentioned on the guide was when I wen to use the VTS fix it thing on MONSTER HOUSE, it says to select the first video_vts file but there was no such file... so as the guide says i just skipped the vts for MONSTER house and went straight to shrink and everything worked fine.

Other then that all was well.

FixVTS isn't a necessary step for most movies....glad you got the desired results.

Happy burning.

I HAVE DVD SHRINK, DVD DECRYPTER & NERO INSTALLED. ALL I DO IS PUT DVD IN, OPEN SHRINK, CLICK "OPEN DISC" THEN "OK" WHEN ITS FINISHED ANALYZING I CLICK "BACKUP" THEN FOLLOW DIRECTIONS ON SCREEN. BUT I COPT TO DVD. I DELETE MOVIE FILES FROM HARD DRIVE AS THEY TAKE UP LOTS OF SPACE. HOPE THAT HELPS

LOCOENG..Your process is very comprehensive! I will try it and let you know how it works out. I'm running Vista Home Basic, and the stuff I was using on XP doesn't work on the Vista machine. Do you know if your process works with Vista Home Basic, or do I have to upgrade the Os? Appreciate your input...or anyone's who can!! Thanks

I don't have any experience with Vista, but I think those programs should run in compatability mode. As far as upgrading your OS I don't think you can upgrade any further than you already have, the only thing you could do is downgrade to XP...which would be an upgrade in my book :)

For reliability and upgrades to the free decryption software I'll agree wholeheartedly with LOCOENG. DVDFab HD Decrypter is the best program for doing the decryption and bypassing copy protections and it's free. For transcoding (shrinking the DVD files) Shrink is as good as most retail programs. There's a file you should be able to find here on AD to replace the DVD Shrink exe file so ImgBurn will be supported instead of DVD Decrypter. For the novices here, ImgBurn is the updated burning software from DVD Decrypter, by Lightning UK (same author). DVD Decrypter for decryption has been obsolete for the longest. Legal deal and LUK can't update it anymore.

One thing I saw that wasn't mentioned here was not ripping in ISO mode. Don't rip in ISO mode. The reason is you lock the files up in the image file and when needed software is unable to access the files for processing, such as compliance processing with FixVTS and VobBlanker. Most of the time these aren't needed, but handy when they are. DVD Shrink will convert the files to ISO if needed during the transcoding step. You can then select the desired burning options in the Backup window.

In File mode you have BUP, IFO, and VOB files in a Video_TS folder. With FixVTS you drag the first VOB onto the window. Since you're doing a Full DVD though, you can drag any of the VOB files onto FixVTS (not BUP or IFO) and then click Full DVD and it processes all the files. The in place option doesn't leave you with a backup. I uncheck that one so I retain the original files until I'm finished. For those with limited space, the in place might be better. It's a difference of 4.37GB. Unless you have huge hard drives, erase the video files when you finish a backup. They're large and take up a lot of HDD space.

Glad to hear it. I've heard a lot of people complaining about using Vista with older software.

I do exactly what johnbear does. Because I have two DVD drives i put movie in one drive and blank disc in other drive and copy all in one process and then delete any files left on the computer. You can walk away from computer and let it process all in one hit.

Works okay as long as you don't run into newer copy protections that DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink can't handle (there's a bunch of them nowadays). With the new copy protections on a lot of releases I'd follow LOCOENG's suggestions, if you want to do it with freeware. DVDFab HD Decrypter, Shrink, and DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn. ImgBurn is the newer version of DVD Decrypter writing (burner) software.

Open the files in DVD Shrink or if they don't need shrinking, you can open them in your burner program and burn direct to DVD.

DVDFab HD Decrypter creates a VIDEO_TS folder at a destination that you choose. As PacMan suggested, simply open up your burning program, or DVD Shrink if the project needs compressing, and browse to the new file and open it.

ok i got the dvd to burn but here is my new question. i used the three programs you said to use but when i burned the dvd all i got was the movie, no extras. so i guess what i am asking is, is this way only if you want the movie not any extras from the org. dvd

That is correct. If you want the entire disc, menus, special features and all, then simply rip the disc using DVDFab HD Decrypter in Full disc mode and then use DVD Shrink in Full Disc mode and you will have basically a 1:1 backup. The movie may suffer quality wise because you are putting alot of extra data on the backup for compression in most cases.

This should be the default mode that DVD Shrink open in.
