HOW TO backup Wii and GC Games (Better Guide)

There are other methods of backing up games, but this is by far the easiest.
You'll need a few things:
-A Wii (unmodded is fine)
-The genuine game disc you want to backup
-A way to boot homebrew (<<Homebrew Channel>>)
-A PC on the same network as your Wii, an SD card, or a USB Drive.
-Waninkoko's Custom IOS (Basically a small firmware hack)
Before you do anything, you need to patch your Wii IOS firmware (I've tested it and it's safe as long as you do it as described).
-Obtain a copy of the original Wii IOS wad file (IOS37-64-v2070.wad)
Hint: Google for it.
-Place the original IOS37-64-v2070.wad at the root of your sd card.
-Download this {Mirror} file and unzip it to the /apps folder on the root of your sd card.
-Run the Custom IOS Installer on your wii to install the hacked version (boot as any other homebrew. The zip file I prepared is setup for use with the homebrew channel)
Now that your IOS is patched, you can dump games easily. Continue with the process:
Download Waninikoko's DVD Dump tool from here. {Mirror}
Unzip the DVDDumper folder and place it in /apps folder on the root of your sd card. You can also load it however you load other homebrew, but I specifically prepared the download to be ready for use with the homebrew channel.
Boot the file boot.dol in the DVD dumper folder.
You will be asked a couple questions. You can use the wiimote D-Pad to navigate between options.
-If you choose to use an SD card or flash drive, it will ask you what size you want the pieces to be. Just make sure whatever you pick will fit on your drive/card.
-If you choose the Wifi method (way easier) then start the dump.
-Choose the right type of disc (GC, Wii, Or DVD9 Wii). DVD9 Wii is a dual layer Wii game. Currently that only applies to Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Make sure you pick the right one because it doesn't check for you!
-Once you pick start on the wii, go to your pc's web browser and go to the url your wii displays (usually an internal IP like 192.168.1.x).
-This will bring you to a simple html page being served by your wii.
-Click 'Start Dumping <title>'
-The game will now dump directly to your HDD in iso form!
The dump takes about 1.25 hrs for a GC disc, 2.5 hrs for a single-layer Wii disc, and I assume Brawl takes about 5 hrs.
Make sure that once the dump is complete, the sizes are exact:
Wii: 4.37 GB (4,699,979,776 bytes)
GC: 1.35 GB (1,459,978,240 bytes)
If the sizes are not EXACT, you have a bad dump and must start it over.
If you have any questions or suggestions, add them here and I'll address them.
Enjoy your dump :P
How to join the pieces of a dumped game:
You need a small program to join the pieces that you got (either from the SD or USB method).
Download this {Mirror}. Run the program inside the archive, place all the pieces of the dump in the same directly and then choose the first one.
The files should now be joined into the game ISO.
(PS: The old guide by bunny_C is not upgradeable because they got banned. Otherwise I'd have asked them to update theirs. This method is way easier than any other, because you don't need a modchip or other hardware/software and you can dump directly to your pc. Thanks to Waninkoko for their great application.)

-If you keep getting ret- error messages and you're using Internet Explorer, try Mozilla Firefox instead.

Do you need any other files?
I placed it in the apps folder for the Homebrew channel and when I launch DVD dumper it goes to a black screen then back to the Homebrew channel menu.

AH! I completely forgot that you need Waninoko's custom IOS revision installed. I'll add the details on how to do this.

Is IOS37-64-v2070.wad region locked like other WAD files are or is there only 1 file that is compatible with all region systems?

It's omni-region and applies to all wii systems. Anybody can use it.

cIOS37 has some problems, they are now on to cIOS36 rev. 4
Also, you can extract the IOS wad files yourself from the ISO's with trucha signer or other tools. you will need the ckey.bin file for any of the programs to work. ---Chikn

The replies seem to say the new version will not work with DVD Dump. At least not until it is recoded for IOS 36 that is.

Lol. I changed the links back.
Rev3 has never given me trouble.
So until Rev4 supports DVD Dump, I'll leave it like this.

Saw some news on WiiNewz about a boot loader being released by Waninkoko that will boot backups without a Modchip using the custom IOS firmware. I would link to the thread but the site is down at this time. HERE is a link to vido proof.
Will defiantly be watching news on that when more comes available.
Would be nice to have that added to the guide if and when the loader comes out.

Yeah I'm keeping my eye on that too. Let's all hope it pans out!
Waninkoko keeps putting out awesome stuff, so if it's really by Waninkoko, I don't doubt it's greatness.

is there any problems with updating and what not if you put the custom firmware on? I don't mind putting on the homebrew channel and whatnot, but I am a little concerned about having Nintendo brick my wii because the put something in the next firmware that disables wii's with a custom firmware.
I still play my wii, just not as much. Gave my PSP to my son. |

Trying to make a backup image for zelda for me to practice burning on.
Wifi dumping works fine albiet slow (6-10 hours eta)
I formatted my 4gb memorex usb drive with FAT and FAT32 and both give an error when trying to mount
Any idea what would cause this?
SD dump works fine, but switching 9 times will be a tad annoying ^^

Wifi dumping should only take 2.5 hrs for Twilight Princess (Wii).
Make sure all your router conditions are optimal, and don't use so much of your internet bandwidth that it slows the WAN bandwidth (hard to do but yeah).
For some reason I'm thinking 2Gb is the limit, or that some flash drives are just incompatible.
Your best bet it to work out your home network problems because the Wifi dump is fucking boss.

I figured it was a partition size problem, havn't tried fixing it.
No chance of improving my wifi speeds, router and wii and totally on opposite sides of the house going through alot of walls -.-
Will just have to try and make my usb drive work

You could just move it when you backup a game @_@
Or buy another router and bridge the connections.
$30 to save you alot of manual labor.
