Its kind of hard to predict the price of PS3 at the moment its more of a stab in the dark, so to speak.
It will depend on many factors like the price of the Blue ray drive, wirless internet and whether Sony will include the hard drive or not as well as many more thing's.
If it is to come with the hard drive I would definatly have to say the PS3 will be no less than $500

but hard drives are not expensive, especially if your company can produce them or buy them in large quantities. ken kutegari already said the hdd will be standrd and come with the ps3 out of the box. the 360 shafts you charging 99 for the hdd and a normal 20gb drive is like 40 bucks. a 60 i saw today was only 60 dollars, so if made and baught in large wholesale, that would be like 10-15 a piece for sony.

so if M$ is charging so much for their HDD, how do you know that sony will not do the same.

I'm going to go with 500$ us for the ps3 fully loaded at release.
couple reasons.
1. you are getting a Blu-ray dvd player as well. if you remember dvd player prices when they came out, they were like 1000 for sony's.
Which will probably be a selling point for ps3 as well. why by the dvd player if you can get the ps3?
2. Sony interview i read the other day said that the ps3 would cost more then the 360, but then defended the price with 60 gig hard drive, Blu-ray, brand new proccesing core.

rabbity thats not what im saying. im just saying they are cheap as hell to make so the overall cost wont skyrocket because with all thats offered they need a lower price. think logically, seriously.
and i think they will lower teh stand alone players price by the release in may. or keep them around 500-700 and lower them at the ps3 release a bit. also ittl be a way to showcase blueray, and then march out the ps3 as "a cheap next gen movie player" that will be cheaper than a decent HD-DVD player or bluray player, and is your home entertainment centerpiece.

yes but even if they are cheap to make, a company like sony or m$ will charge loads for them, so that they can make easy money, as everyone will want a hard drive.

but notice, this is sonys change to offer everything cool at a lower but profitly acceptable price since the console will cost more. people will be "oh everything for it is cheaper so the 50-100 dollars upfront will be easily made back and over done."

Ok honestly guys, Sony is at best getting its COGS price back on this...for the non-business major thats Cost of Goods Sold, more than likely it will cost the consumer less than what it costs to manufacture, So it probably costs Sony about 900 to make the darn thing, so I would say release date price of around 500 to 600. They make their money back from the games and blu ray dvds which cost them like 5 bucks to manufacture... Im looking forward to the release :-D

it will not cost 900, 900 is the consumer non-wholesale rate, like if i baught all the parts separet rather than wholesale.

Okay anubis lets put this into perspective.
Xbox 360 with headset, wireless controler, 20gb hard drive and console = $399 US
PS3 with wirless internet, blue ray, wirless controler, 60gb hard drive and cell prossessor = ?
Now it doesnt take a high IQ to figure out that the PS3 will be more expensive but from what I can see there, there is a big gap therefore it has to be a gap of around $100 US.

but it also takes a low iq to think the cell and the bluray are going to cost as much as people estimate. they are both made by sony. so the transaction and shipping prices wont occure, same as when u buy factory direct you save for buying in the stores. plus with them woning and/or having partnership in pattents on these, they wount have to pay to license, another spot to save. wireless is cheap an easy, they have wireless usb things that look like flash drives for like 20 bucks. i can see the price being no less than 449.99 but in no way higher than 479.99

Microsoft have all those tie's into the industry as much as Sony if not more.
I completly disagree. A DVD9 drive and a Blue ray
A 20gb hard drive and a 60gb
A newly designed costly prossesor and a more old fashinoned double threaded triple core prossesor
A wirless network adapter and no wirless network adapter
More ports like USB and SD, etc
Bluetooth
Even just adding $10 for each of thos things makes it $60 more than the 360 and I cant see that happening can you?
$10 extra for the things like Bluetooth and extra USB's/memory cards but not for a blue ray drive, Wirless network and 60gb hard drive.

It wouldnt surprise me one bit if the PS3 cost exactly as much as the premium XBOX360, combo, what would be a bold move is to have PS3 cost $100 less. Undoubtedly it will be with $100 of Xbox 360, but it depends how they package it. Say they add a bunch of goodies (an extra controller, etc) they can market that as a PS3 premium at the same price or lower than the Xbox360 premium and then, as microsoft did, market the "core" systems...ehh who knows, no one really knows how much all this stuff costs, but it should be coming within the week :-)

most everyone agrees that sony and M$ lose money on their consoles and make it up with their video game sales and accessories. i think that the price it costs per part for the ps3 and the overall price to manufacture is irrelevant when trying to figure out how much the ps3 is going to cost.....i really shouldnt say irrelevant, but not as much of a factor as one may think.why...well think about it, if in 6 months sony sold 5 million ps3's..thats 5 million potential customers that will or wont buy sony developed games and also blu ray movies which could only help recoup the initial losses of production. i would also think that is a fairy strong initial consumer base that would be expected to only grow. there are many factors sony has to their advantage that can help lower the cost of production. the biggiest factors are sonys ability to mass produce and distribute the ps3 worldwide and how successful blu ray becomes....some factors for failure...producition problems similar to those with M$, flawed and choppy launch titles also like the 360 had because its fair to say the 360's quality of games by then should be running full speed, and the possible failure of blu ray media.

the ps2 has been very profitable. the xbox saw ms with a 4 billion dollar loss. losses arnt the goal.

If it wasnt M$ behind the Xbox it would have been another 3DO 0-o

After having the PS2 I found the Xbox better, and your right, if Microsoft wasnt behind the Xbox it would have been another 3DO. This would have been a shame becuase it was a very good console, so its fortunate Microsoft where behind the product.
With regards to the PS3, I can see your meaning behind price. The price of the console would be irrelivant becuase revenue would be made in the games. However this is to some extent untrue, because too much of a loss would mean insufficiant gross profit to cover global economic manufacture and distibution. Therefore it can be argued that Sony can make there console very cheap in regards to the technology used, but there has to be a point where the pricing is limited. This is why I believe the console to be no cheaper than $350 but more likely $400-$500.

I have no dout the Xbox is built better than the PS2...all the revisions and crap I ahve built my PS2 so I know the horrors of the frankenstin that still sells for 150 0-o
The Xbox is not bad but it realy dose lack games compared to the others hopefuly the 360 made a deeper impact with the Japanase devs ^^
In anycase 350 is to cheap for a PS3...if the "FULL" ps3 is 350 I will buy it day one *L* but realisticly I see it pushing 500 650 at the most if not 499 feels right but who knows they might try soemthing to shake thigns up.
With these new Formats comign out in a year or less ,I can see them automactily adding these to the next revision of the consoles in 2 or so years, what you think would prices fall enough for them to do this?
