I am planning on purchasing an Xbox 360 for the purpose of flashing it to play burned games. From what I have read, different models have different levels of difficulty associated with the flashing process. With that in mind, what models should I be looking at. Alternatively, is there a safe and secure way of purchasing one which has already been modded?

I would get a fat model if you buy one of the newer ones you'll need to get one of those pcb replacement things and fat ones are cheaper anyway. try and get one of the newer fat ones though they run a lot quieter. also i would try one of the modding forums if your looking for a already modded 360 or craigslist is good too. you can probably get a kit to mod a 360 off ebay for cheap cuz some people charge a premium for pre-modded stuff.

infam0us is right... nothing is safe... let me remind you that the console can flag itself if something is wrong even without using live and once it does that next update of dash will render your backups obsolete... and one of the main "scary" reasons for flags is that its written in the nand of the console and cant be removed.... dirty disk errors during a game or complete lack of disk recognition.... even if you use the latest lt3 and ihas burner will not save you from it.... you always take a chance when flashing your drive...

I wasnt saying it was safe the person wasnt asking either he was asking a few questions and i answered them. if he was asking if it was safe im sure there would have been a topic for that. he was only asking about which to buy if he was just going to play burned disks with nothing about wanting to play it online with his friends and i never said i knew anything about the scene and im not a noob. just because you went on xbox live and got banned while playing pirated games you have to post stuff to scare noobs into not wanting to bother backing up their games

eh.... lol... live ban does not equal to flagging.... ban from live just bans the key vault of your xbox this does not affect the backups in any way... you have the same risk with your backups and pirate iso.. does not matter if you use live or not... once the console is flagged it wont matter much... you just jump to conclusions way to fast.... we are not trying to scare anyone.. let alone talk about piracy lol... i can tell you this though more than half of the people here download games... you think its easy to do a backup of a game? sure you can do a copy using a simple dvd drive and inject missing stuff with abgx... but a true 1:1 copy needs a 0800 drive... and guess what.... that half that do download does not have one.... hell they even don't know what XBC is.... im not starting a fight im just saying things the way they are... we all know the risk of flashing.. some dont... we are here to tell them that flashing is a risk nothing else...

I'm not concerned about the risks. I have a PS3 that I use for online play and that would suffice if something went wrong with the console. I understand the risks of modification. My mention of safety had to do with the transaction of BUYING a modified Xbox without being ripped off, not really with the consequences of flashing itself. I'm just wanting a modified xbox because the process of backing up and burning disks seems easier than it would be on my PS3, so I don't mind dropping the extra cash.

well in that case i would suggest you to check how much does rgh cost vs the price of a modded drive flashed console... usually rgh modded one should be around the 150-200 considering you dont really play online with xbox rgh should fit the profile unless its more costly than drive flashed one....

You don't need any pcb replacement thing for the newer fats, you don't even need special tools for it. If you're comfortable enough with opening up the console the flashing is pretty easy.
By the way, on ebay flashed boxes normally go for the same price as unflashed ones. I personally just wouldn't buy a box that has already been opened, way too risky to buy a fixes RROD one that dies on you in a month or so.
Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

i wasn't saying the newer fat ones need a pcb replacement i said the slim models do or as i said the "newer model" read everything before typing a reply. also im not even going to bother really responding to what you said because like i thought he didnt care about the risks suck on it. also screw the scene i dont really care about that either i rghed my console and said goodbye all i do now is help people with their games.

slim line does not really need pcb replacement... you still need tools to extract the drive key... the cheap way is to get sputnik360 and solder it to the pcb not only getting unlock but also you can extract the key... and the price in less than 10 bucks.. now pcb replacement is around 50-60 bucks... and that's not cheap considering it comes as empty and you still need to program it with your own key...

ahhh yes screw the scene! >:D *sigh* if it weren't for the scene you would not have the RGH in the 1st place... not to mention RGloader or Dashlaunch or FreeBOOT or FreeStyleDash and the most important XELL the ability to load your own code with out even touching the xbox kernel... yes... screw the scene... i wonder how you help people with their games with your RGH since it dosent really care for games being run from the drive... heck you can even see RGH is region free its set for dev 0xFFFFFFFF....
infam0us said it best :3

Can someone explain to me how the box gets flagged "offline"? I have burned a few games for people that say it's not readable, even though I am using a flashed Liteon drive to burn them. Could it be a flag? Or maybe my cheap ass rex discs.

seriously wtf happened to this thread. the guy never even asked if it's safe for live.
that being said i wouldn't buy one right now because it's the start of the holiday shopping season. if there' gonna be an upcoming ban wave it would probably happen in November.
