I extracted the system folder to my desktop then, I copied all of the files inside the folder onto a flash drive, inserted the flash drive, powered the system down and back up. Nothing happened.

Then, I took all of the files from inside the update folder and burnt them to a CD, put the CD in the Xbox tray, powered the system down and back up. Nothing happened.

I tried, but without success. Do you have to hit the reset button for the update to be triggured or can you power down the system and then power it back up?
I have the faceplate in case off of my 360, so I can flash it. I'm having difficulty getting to the reset button to make the system reset.
Any advice on how to get to the reset button?

My USB update folder for 13599 that I've used for a handful of consoles is named: $SystemUpdate

All of the files are directly inside that folder, and the folder is directly on the root of the USB drive.
A lot of people make the mistake of extracting that folder into a 2nd folder. Make sure it's a single folder named "$SystemUpdate".

I have one single folder on my flash drive named $systemupdate.

I have also tried the same thing with a cd.

Any other advice?

Does the dashboard have to be updated?

renaming the folder to $$ystemupdate is a jtag thing(safety feature in the new dashlaunch)

your 360 might not recognize that update as as newer than your own
try the newest one from the xbox website:

mine didn't work that way needed two $$ signs but I only have jtags with my resistor bridged and havent had the chance to try updating a non jtag with usb just assumed it would work the same.

I just want to make sure I have the steps in the process correct.
1. Extract the system update folder onto the flash drive
2. Insert the flash drive into the Xbox with the power on.
3. Reset the system leaving the flash drive plugged in.
The update should automatically take place.

As I mentioned above I'm having trouble getting the reset button to work. Once I insert the flash drive for the first time into the Xbox can I power down the system and then power it back up? Or do I have to reset the system in order for the update to be run?

Does anyone have any advice on how to reach the reset button without putting the case completely back together? It is very difficult for me to assemble and disassemble the case.

I just got a 360 in the mail today doing the same thing. It failed on an online update si I tried to do it through the usb but im assuming in my case part of the update was done so it wont update now. since my failed update my 360 freezes up which I think is the e71 error. you could google how to reset your console to factory default settings and clear your updates then try it again which sometimes works. It didnt work for me but my system was a rrod junker with the strangest rrod kit I ever seen my friend tried it on his though and it updated after. Not guaranteeing thats your problem but it is a possibility.

When you say it is unable to proceed with the update, does that mean that you started the update process from another source (not the usb)?

I recently ran an update on a banned console, which then rendered the drive as stock so was unable to complete the update (until i reflashed) from the same disc. however i did have an original gears 3 so i tried that to complete the update. which also was unable to complete; in the end it was due to the update being a different dashboard version. soon as i downloaded the right version to USB it completed the update first time; no rebooting required. just connected the USB drive while on the error screen and the update then completed;

It's probably what dt5500 said.

What causes some of these failed updates is this: -

1. Someone puts a backup of a game in a flashed console. The game has a firmware update on it that flashes the drive back to stock. They accept the update.

2. The update happens in stages. At a certain stage of the update, their drive is flashed back to stock. As they were updating from a backup, the 360 can no longer read it as it's now stock and the update can't complete.

3. They then download the latest dashboard update from Xbox.com and try and finish the update with that, only the one on the backup they were using wasn't the same update - it was actually a slightly earlier one - so the update will not complete.

An easy way to fix this is if you have the backup you originally tried to update from (when it went wrong). You can put that into your PC and just copy the $SystemUpdate folder from the video partition to a USB stick, then use that USB stick to finish updating the console.

Will I be safe using the wireless Internet to update my dashboard, if my current drive is modified with an old version of firmware?

I finally found a flash drive that my Xbox will recognize. The update began to run but then I received a message that said something to the effect of-- for this update to take place security and system updates will need to be installed if you agree to the changes press except, if not you will be taken back to the Xbox 360 dashboard.

I click except and the Xbox attempted to connect to the Internet. I was unable to connect to the Internet. Then I received a message that said update failed.

I contacted Microsoft about this issue. And they said I needed to have my Xbox sent in for repair.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I might fix the problem?
