Not sure how this mod was done.

I purchase an XBOX 360 Arcade edition way back in 2007-8 (HDMI). I went to a mod place to mod it. Back then, it was impossible to mod it because of the new DVD drive (I think it was a Lite-on?) so I paid them extra so they could install a Samsung drive in it and they did their thing. They had a huge lot of Samsung drives in a box and put it in.

Modding updates/changes the firmware on the DVD drive right? So does that mean the Samsung they installed is modded while the Lite-on drive is UN-modded?

I don't understand where they got that huge box of Samsung drives and don't understand how the "key" is attached to identify the Xbox 360 online.

1-correct on both modded & unmodded, however it's only a flash mod of the drive, the other mod like for jtag or a rgh also flashes the cpu

2-it's called spoofing they read the original dvd drives firmware to get the key then flash the samsung with it to trick the 360 into thinking it's a liteon, tho ms has in the past released an update to reflash the dvd drive back to stock

4-the liteon can be flashed now with the correct firmware however i'm not sure about going online with either drive as to whether you risk a ban or not,you may want to look at xkey if your dash is current however if you have a v7 dash it would pay to look at jtag

3-do something about the thread title to better describe your issue, you should be able to edit it i think

So you are saying that the Key is on the DVD drives? Is the key found somewhere else and must match the other hardware parts?

The box of Samsung drives he got did not have a separate key? I don't remember what the guy did but I do remember him soldering wires to something and connecting it to a computer.

Lets say I want to revert back to original factory state. Can I just put my Lite-on drive back as it was not modded?

1. Yes, the key is stored in the Xbox 360's motherboard as well as in the drive's board.
2. The Samsung drives were clean or from defective boxes, RROD ones for example, the one you have now had to be flashed with your drive key and "spoofed" to making the drive think it's a LiteOn. This also means you have not updated your dashboard in quite a while, a way back there was a dashboard that flashed your drive back to stock firmware, with a spoofed drive you ended up in an update loop.
3. That is what you can do and what I would definitely recommmend (see the update loop part above). Then update to the latest dashboard and get it flashed with LT3.0, or do it yourself if you think you can, it's actually not that hard.

About the XKey and JTAG scorpNZ mentioned: I personally am not very fond of the XKey, I think it's too expensive nowadays, you'd have to pay around 150 USD for the hardware (including a decent external harddrive) and the only advantage over a flashed drive is that you don't have to burn your games to disc anymore but instead can play them from a harddrive (there are some more advantages all the XKey fanboys claim, but most are just bullsh*t). The Xbox 360 has pretty much reached the end of it's life cycle, with the Xbox One due in two or three months, so there won't be that many new games for it. A JTAG (if possible) or RGH (if JTAG isn't possible) lets you play some emulators and other homebrew, also games from an external harddrive and has some more advantages (DLC from other sources than XBL for example), it's definitely superior to the XKey, but you can't go on XBL any more (which you don't seem to have done in a while anyways). Again, this is quite expensive, about the same price as an XKey if you get it done by someone (which I would REALLY recommend, it's quite complicated and includes soldering) and again with the end of the Xbox 360's life cycle on the horrizon I am not too sure it's worth it.

Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

Whatever you do from this point research carefully before you decide on updating the actual dash of the 360 if it's still at v7 because if it was i personally wouldn't hesitate to jtag it,youtube videos would be the best source of what a jtag or rgh can do,if i could sum up a jtag i'd say if you have a decent size video game library or you tend to game regularly with different games then it becomes worth it as your not required to get up to change discs & if you know where to go there's a whole stack of arcade games to be had wink wink,it's a shame ms didn't release those arcade games on dvd as well in the form of a compilation some of those games are hard case, defender, defender II,galaga, galaga legions to name a few, plus the old classics, ecco dolphin, pacman,ms pacman etc,etc

the main advantage of the xkey is gaming online without the need to flash the dvd drive it can be left stock, however you still need to read the key of the dvd drive as the xkey requires it,a peruse thru the 360 sections of AD will bring up talk of the xkey & some who own one to get a better idea

Which is actually the hardest part. Flashing the drive afterwards is just a few more buttons in Jungleflasher.

Is there really that much difference between a JTAG and a RGH, when it comes to functions? I know that the procedures are different and that you can RGH every dashboard.

Nah there isn't & the rgh chip has improved since it's inception,i recall it being quite buggy when it was first released for booting anyway, either way both methods beats changing discs

been trying for a while to get a friend to upgrade from his favorite hard modded ps2,originally told him to dump it & get a original xbox with a hard mod,cut a long story short ff to now,he's been off work through a work relate arm injury nothing too serious, lent him my jtag 3 weeks ago for the first time apart from the games including arcade games he's sold, even i had no idea how good games looked on hdmi (been using component as my tv for some reason won't play hdmi from the 360,works fine from computer),we hooked up analogue on his old lcd tv,looked like crap playing crysis 2,switched to component, looked better, then i went over for a day 2 Saturdays ago,he moved the 360 to lounge to game on the 55" using hdmi the difference was noticeable straight away the clarity & just the general look even i was shocked, needless to say from about 9am sat till 1am the following morning it was halo 3 in split screen on easy mode, haven't gamed like that for years, obviously stopping for drinks n lunch & pit stops along the way & a lot of swearing once we got close to the end,i was driving ..lol..

unless you have something specific to help jsmithc's issue it'd be best in future not to post nothing topic related & instead find a thread where anyone can post anything or whatever a read of forum rules would do a world of good as well..out

Just to stress it may be worth it as Microsoft have announced that they plan to support the xbox360 for another 3 years with at least another 100 titles after the launch of the xbox one console. So yes there is some life left in the old girl yet.

Of these 100 titles, I wonder how many EA Sports games titles and other sports titles there will be. I am guessing at least 20%. Then the annual boring updates to Call Of Duty and Battlefield. I personally think most of these 100 titles get released in the first three to six months after the release of the Xbox One, because that are those games still in development. Maybe there is still a little life left in the old gal, but there won't be any new blockbuster games for it.

They should've done that for the original instead of dropping it like a stone, should be interesting to see what the modding crowd come up with for the xbox 1 in regards to cracking it n stuff, not that it matters i'm switching to pc for future games tho i would like to see another farcry & crysis for the 360 & a burnout game tho with burnout a back to basics approach like b2

Think it was a case of error of their ways.Your right they dropped the original xbox like a stone and development was non-existent. Eisherz you may be right about what does come out for the 360 after the launch on the "ONE",i personally cannot stand EA sports titles but as you may of seen when they unveiled the new console at E3 guess what 90% of the game titles EA developed. We all knew they would keep up the battlefield,COD franchise be stupid for them not too.Like what was said no new blockbuster games will be out for the 360 only for the ONE console due to its graphic capabilities. So yes will be interesting to see what does come out and when for the 360.I will be venturing into "one" ground at some stage due to children ragging my head for it but im sitting on the fence to see what pans out regarding its functionality in the uk after launch(IE live tv swapping etc only usable in the states at launch).
