If it was an older dash and you haven't updated yet it could also be a firmware missmatch, the guy who tried to flash it before flashed the wrong firmware to it. LiteOns are only 02510c after they were reflashed by last year's fall update. And that the backups go directly back to dashboard is also quite normal, with an official firmware on the drive. If it realy was a key missmatch, you'd get the "If you want to play this game put it into an Xbox 360" screen. You could try flashing the drive with firmware for 74850c or 83850c and see what happens.
Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

the guy did try to update dash but it failed due to having cfw on drive.... once he flashed with stock and did dash install it should have flashed the drive aswell... dosent MS make every dash cumulative? even if your on 12k installing 16k would flash the drive aswell?.. if it was spoofed the drive after dash install would be dead no?.... later on he did flash Lt3.0..... he did it right with the pre 13k flash and updated the dash so the drive was flashed with the right firm... unless the drive was spoofed... but reading the logs he posted drive is liteon... i dont know.... i give up :(

It doesn't have to be a cfw on the drive for the error message, this could happen when the drive has a wrong firmware too, the error message just means that the there was a problem with the identification of the drive, if the drive identifies itself as 02510c but really is a 74850c you'd get that error message too. But seeing the op already is on the latest dash now that would be out of the question either.

Quick question. Going back to when I first tried the xbox. It was thinking the games were dvds but playing cds. When I changed the laser from my elite it still thought the games were dvds but when trying backups then they reverted. I've placed the original laser back in there and its the same as when I first tried it. My elite has a philipsbenq drive I believe and this xbox philips liteon. I read that they use the same laser, could anyone confirm this because if not this may be the issue? Thanks
someone swiped the drives and didnt spoof drives ..trust me this is not fixable as you do not have your original drive key ...if u stick any xbox drive in a xbox it will play movies, but without the original fw it will not play games...what you are saying happend to me when i switched my drives by mistake.unless you can get the orig from the seller all u have is a dvd player and movie streamer

I can confirm this, done that myself before too.
@user473 In that case it would play the games as DVDs too, it wouldn't just stay on the Xbox 360 logo or revert back to desktop.
