newtechie even tho Russ brings up a good point you're gonna have those kinda times with almost anything you do. ;) You can choose a better HDD but an IDE 8MB cache HDD is gonna be about 30% slower than a 16MB cache HDD. IF you were transferring files then I'd say even slower. I remember when I ADDED my 320 16MB cache SATA to the system, you talk about FAST. lol.

Russ I had/have an old Dell P4 1.0 (i think) and I tried to use DVD RB Pro but AFTER 6 hours I stopped the process because it said it was about 60% (total) done. I think you bring up a good point BUT it's not gonna make that big of a time difference with whatever newtechie does on that machine. With the changes that are gonna have to happen (except for OC'in) it would better serve them to buy a new mobo, cpu, and RAM then move everything else over to improve times. ALL that can be done for about $300 (maybe less if you get super sales) after MIR. ;)

Sorry for the OT post but sometimes that happens. ;) I'll post some scans when I get back. :P

Everyone have a GREAT Spring Break and you kiddies don't do anything silly. hehehe. :P

That's why I asked newtechie to be more specific. Unless we can determine whether he has a MB that has adjustments for overclocking and decent memory, we can't help him improve his RB times!

The old P4s like that were bog slow! My Dell 420 workstation running just 1 1GHz P-III will eat it alive. When I sold the 3000, I put the original 2.8/533 Prescot and the 533 memory back in it. His DVD Shrink times were always slower with it than mine were with the 420, by 10-12 minutes for the same flick! LOL!! With it's current 2 1.4GHz P-IIIs in it, there's not a Prescot that can touch it, but a 3.2 Northwood, is faster!

Best Regards,
Russ

My motherboard is a Gigabyte (8IPE10000P-G) model and I did overclock my 3.0ghz processor to 3.2. I have 4 sticks(512mb) of PC3200 memory and I believe hyperthreading is enabled.

Hey that's fine LOCO, smart really but DON'T use SB02 thinking it will help anything, it's frikkin TERRIBLE!!!! Just wanted to warn you on that buddy. :D

NOT bad scans with that f/w for sure.... Are you gonna use C0deKing's "special" f/w or the stock f/w?? Nothing wrong with CK's stuff and it's what I use 100% of the time if I can find it. :)

good luck to you buddy....

BOG slow huh?? That's funny Russ, never thought of it like that but it's true!!! lol.

newtechie I don't think you will get much better performance out of that setup. NOT a bad setup but nothing like these new Intel's. :) The Q6600 that LOCO is running isn't fair to compare to for sure. :) The upper end C2D's (E6750, E6850, E8400) will keep up with it on normal applications but any progie that utilizes 4 cores will run faster for sure!! ;)

NOW!!! Who's got some scans to make fun of?? hehehe. :P

I hadn't planned on doing alot of testing with the firmwares so from here I'll go straight to SB03 and more than likely I'll get modified firmware as I have no problems with it at all. I'm looking for another drive to pair with this one now. Eventually I'd like a Lite-On, but not this time....Pioneer 215D or NEC/Optiarc I'm thinking.

Can someone tell me where the Write Speed Data Graph in in ImgBurn! I downloaded the latest version and I can't find it or I'm not understanding something (I'm not a software person). I went to the help file and all that does is open a window!

Sincerely,
Russ

Russ, you have to have DVDInfoPro installed and then once the burn has completed and you've pressed OK the original window comes back up, look for the blue "i" next to the burn button...above and to the right.

LOCO if you're gonna get a NEC/Optiarc just make sure it's truly Optiarc.... A few of the Sony's coming out are Lite-On's, so if you're wanting a N/O go to VideoHelp.com and see what they say the manufacturer is.

I'm curious about the newer Pioneers, I have the DVR-112D@DVR-112L 8.25 and it's great but I want/need another SATA burner to fill up the Gigabyte case I have. :D

From what I've read at CDF I doubt I'll be looking for the 212D, but I'd really like to have a 215D....AFAIK they aren't widely available in the states though and the few places that have them are waaaaay overpriced.

I recently installed a 215D for a friend that bought it, and It worked fine but it was the loudest drive I ever came across. When it spins up, it roars! I couldn't imagine it in an aluminum case! Maybe it was just that drive, but like I said, it works well, but too noisy for my tastes.

My preference is an Asus E616A2 for my DVD Rom and an NEC/Optiarc AD-7170A for the burner. The combination works very well together, and has for the last 3 computers. They are all I use, and I've sold a ton of them with no problems!

Russ

Russ I agree with your DVDRW choice. I have the SATA version of that and would have ZERO problems getting another one if I could find them. I've looked (although not extensively) at the usual haunts for me and haven't found them. I bought 2 at SMS about 6 months ago or so and they were cheap!! :D

Man I have a few scans to load but NO way to load them here. :P

@Mr.E

all is well here. ive left the system alone at 3.6ghz. been running there fine all weekend. not problem one. been burning some disc up he past few days. ive used some of them newer 16x+verbs you know the ugly packageing they have now.. i seem to like them.
as BlivetNC and a few others have commented on the verbs lately with the high amount of PIE's the first 5 disc i hve burnt out of this new batch all under 15000 pie's pretty nice i think. would like to see them under 10,000 but hey the drive has to learn them i guess. they code out the same as the older version(s)MCC004
just glad they arent the MII's..

GM,
The reason I line the Asus drive for my DVD-Rom is it will read disks that other drives won't! I've even managed to be able to burn an ISO and make a new disk on disks that wouldn't run in the NEC. I use both drives in all my 2 drive customer builds, and the only one that ever went bad was mine! My cheapo PS went south taking the DVD-Rom, which was running at the time of the fireworks, with it. 3 days left on the warranty from Newegg! No problem as they replaced it! I would really like a combo drive for CDs, but Silver seems to have disappeared. I have the ability to paint it, but I'm pretty sure that would void the warranty! LOL!!

Glad to hear your new rig is running smoothly!

Best Regards,
Russ
