I did a couple of more for my own piece of mind. lol. NOT really. :P

Anyway the first disc I burned after the f/w flash was a disaster as I forgot to set smartburn. So first disc of each MID burned after smartburn set and tested. :)

I just bought this model. (iHAP422-08) Be trying it out tomorrow. Similar model to your atapi GM. Why do you suppose your burner being a liteon would call itself an atapi. I had one a few months back that called itself an atapi. It gave up after 15-20 discs(Couldnt recognize blanks). Hope this one lasts longer. Should be getting it in the morning. Wont be able to play for a while though. My bro's computer needs me, lol. Bad PSU, among other things. His luck with computers... I swear, lol.

omegaman7,
atapi has nothing to do with the brand. It's a type of drive.

DEFINITION - ATAPI (AT Attachment Packet Interface) is an interface between your computer and attached CD-ROM drives and tape backup drives. Most of today's PC computers use the standard Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) interface to address hard disk drives. ATAPI provides the additional commands needed for controlling a CD-ROM player or tape backup so that your computer can use the IDE interface and controllers to control these relatively newer device types.

ATAPI is part of the Enhanced IDE (EIDE) interface (also known as ATA-2).

This is pretty old (note the relatively newer device types, but still applies today.

Best Regards,
Russ

I am aware of that. But... what the computer calls the model number bothers me I guess. My thoughts are its a lesser model of lite-on. correct me if im wrong, PLEASE. :D
Is lite-on afraid to call it their own?

It's just a designation and has nothing to do with the quality of the drive. AFAIK all modern Litey's are now recognized this way.

omegaman7,
I guess it only applies to EIDE drives. Sometimes you will see drives in the Hardware Manager and they say they are SCSI. I use two IDE drives in my rig, and both say SCSI. No sense wasting the IDE port when there's no performance difference between IDE and Sata. With round cables, airflow isn't a problem. I don't think they are any lesser. I have a BenQ that's been flashed into a Lite-On LH-20A1P, and consistently get very good burns, mostly 95s with the occasional 93 or 98. I use only the 16x Verbs now, and have no complaints with them at all. Eventually I want an Optiarc AD-7200 or an AD-7220 when I build my AMD rig. I'm in no hurry, I'm waiting for the good Phenom IIs.

Best regards,
Russ

That sums up my plans. I want the next gen phenom! :D :D You will LOVE the opti russ. It consistently outperforms my litey. Dont get me wrong. The litey is awesome, but the opti does a VERY good job with its burns. Its PIf average is substantially lower.
Lol, hows that intel treating you? I joke you not. Every intel processor ive come across did not amount to my amd processors.

omegaman7,
I've got a Brand new D-940 in it right now. Seems I've found out what Electro-Migration does to a CPU. The E6750 won't handle the files properly. I got all sorts of corrupt file errors and a fresh install of XP-Pro SP-2 only lasted 1 1/2 days before it was no longer bootable! I just got the RMA from Intel today. When I put the D-940 in it I had no problems with the supposedly corrupt files! I'll ship it to Intel on Friday when I go into the office.

I think the Intel's do better by the numbers, but as you well know, there's more to speed than benchmarks.

I keep hearing good things about the AD-7200s, and my last couple of burners were Optiarcs. Good solid drives. I have posted some very good scans with the Litey though.

Best Regards,
Russ

@theonejrs

I'm using the optiarc 7200S and the Lite_on 20A1S- recommend them both and altho I mainly burn with 7200 but I don't hesitate to burn with the 20A1 also. You'll get 95s on your scans every time with Tys T02s and verb MCC 004s. Just ask omegaman7. LOL :p

Ha ha. I did some serious upgrades today. 700Watt OCZ(4rails)Xstream, and I also slapped an iHAP422(lite-on) burner in my case. I must admit though, im gonna be skeptical about this one! It sounds different. Call me crazy but something about its sound has me wondering about it. Ive gone through alot of burners. an 8X burn takes a full minute longer than the 7200 as well :( this burn time is the slowest 8X burn ive seen. It was however its first burn. So time will tell if its a performer or a frisbee/coaster maker, lol. Oddly, the lite-on had trouble reading this disc. No id(TYG03), doesnt know which burner burned it, and the load time was substantially longer. As I said, im gonna be VERY skeptical about this drive. Newegg maybe seeing this one again. mmm hmmm, dvd identifier wont even recognize the manufacterer, or ID.
But anywho, here is the scan.

looks like the other drives have trouble reading it too :(
I guess that just leaves one more test ;)

You might give this a read. ;) linky

I don't think there is any patches at this time, so you might have to wait a while until they (f/w guys) get busy with this drive. ;)

Well... 3 frisbees. It would appear among its problems, whether nero burning rom or imgburn, it auto booktypes to dvd-rom on a dvd-r. I dont know if thats the ONLY problem causing it to not play in my dvd player but... im betting not. It shouldnt take the LH-20A1H sooo long to load the disc. Is it possible, that its smart erase capability is causing some kind of erasure of the data on the blank? or is that simply reaching for an answer? Im really at a loss here. One other thing is it is ran via a usb-ide connection. REALLY dont wanna play in the case again. The PSU has a MASS of cable thats difficult to run clean. Man... thats probably the problem too. The chip in the ide usb converter doesnt mesh well with the burners controler chip? hmmm... worth a shot. not tonight im afraid. Not in to tangling with it tonight.

Omegaman7,
If it's USB to IDE, then it will be slow!

Both my DRU830 And DRU840 have been FLAWLESS. Thats why I say that its controller chip may not be meshing well. Though a F/W may address the issue???
Infact, The 840 is a freak of technology when its ripping. Ive seen it upwards of 16,000 kbs! closer to 20,000 i believe

Where did the USB part come from then? I don't think that USB is capable of that kind of speed, although I'm not 100% sure on that! I know for external hard drives they are bog slow.

I run an adapter capable of usb 2.0 speed. So far, its kept up with my hardwares speed ratings. Uncertain about my WD5000aakb drive though. I think it should be faster transfers than im seeing. See... im limited on my Mobo. one ide, 2 sata's. I know, sucks!
it was my first build and I jumped into it.
This optical drive(iHAP422) is the first device ive seen have a problem. YOUR speed problem might be due to HDD drive capability. Thats simply a logical deduction though. As I LOVE my ide-usb ADAPTERS.

Ive read its possible, but I havnt had a compatibility issue, UNTIL NOW. They're actually not coasters. The dvd player doesnt like them, but the computer recognizes them OF COURSE. Somehow the MID is also lost in the burn process. Could have something to do with the load time? I guess I could swap the opti and this ihap422 and see what happens. My DRU820,830,840's have never minded the usb conversion. Perhaps the ihap's controller chip just isnt meshing? There is no apparent speed reduction in the drives running them this way. I have seen their top speeds ran this way. upwards of 20,000kbs.

Not so sure my Litey likes these Verb disks. Just done a test burn on these as I have never used them before, and I am not impressed. May take a little more effort in finding the "sweet spot". As of now I definitely like my TYs better.

fergie not that bad of a burn at that speed. ;) You might drop it down to 16x and see what the results are, just to see. :D Did you try the newer f/w from CK? linky

add: just to ask you guys are using the "settings utility" for Litey drives, right?

fergui1,
Here's my scan with the Verbs I have. My results are consistently like this! I call it a pretty good scan!

I see that the Mine are +R, while Yours are -R. I don't think that I've ever used anything but +R DVDs. I'm not even sure if that makes a difference.
