Hi everybody, I've been having this problem for a long time with my dvd drive, when I'm playing a game and it gets to a certain point in the disc or a high load area (Skyrim keeps freezing when someone summons an Atronach, though it happens eventually with most games) the xbox freezes and I have to turn it off manually with the power button. When I turn it off it makes a quick click and winding down sort of whistle sound. This leads me to believe it's something hardware-related.

I have a benq drive that's been soft-modded, and I already tried cleaning the laser and it didn't help. Has anyone else had or heard of such a problem?

Thanks and happy holidays!

you could be on your way to the dreaded 3rrod syndrome. Its just one of the possible signs. mine did that for a bit over 6 month before it red ringed. My friends 360 only did it twice in the same day and red ringed. You might be able to replace the thermal paste on the cpu and gpu and be okay but I wouldn't guarantee that because it depends on how bad the damage is. Don't use the rrod kit it will further damage your 360. If thermal paste doesn't help then you may need a professional re flow. If you run your 360 standing on the end instead of laying down and it red rings its less likely that it can be fixed without a reball due to gravity pulling the solder down bridging a solder point under the gpu or cpu mostly the gpu. Also standing up they run a few degrees warmer due to the airflow being slowed where the intake is on that end and its so close to the surface its on. Microsoft wont tell you any of that because they want you to buy a new 360 after the warrantee is up. There could be other issues to but without looking at it its hard to tell.
