Is DVD Rebuilder/CCE worth if for less than 20% compression?

I propose bigorange does the LOTR-ROTK 60.9% test.
Donald does the Braveheart test.
Sophocles does what he think will be best.
What do you all think? :)

I never refered to any filters. Rebuilder has a CCE quality setting to trade off sharpness for smoothness just like DVDshrink is doing.
You can if you want but default has always been my preferred.
Shrink smoothing just doesn't make me warm and fuzzy. Just the picture.
Anywho I still have to try the newest shrink to tell if I like the Improvement. I might prefer the old one if smoothing is the main improvement.

I still need to know your programs and settings for the clips. For reference purposes.

Just to remind you, "Smooth" does not smooth/soften the video stream, it spreads the compression more smoothly/evenly between I,P and B frames.
Hence minimizing the chance of macroblocking and "pumping". :)
The tests process is described on the web page and is as follow:
- Movie only of the original LOTR-ROTK done with DVD Shrink v3.1.7, using "No Compression", and keeping one audio stream and subpicture stream (so subsequent backups would apply a compression of 40% or thereabout).
All the subsequent backups used this as the source.
- DVD2DVD-R/CCE VBR 2-pass:
DC precision "10" (bit).
Calculation-Mode "Maximum".
Quantizer characteristics "15".
Multipass VBR Bias "20".
iDCT Algorithm "32-bit MMX".
- DVD Shrink v3.2.0.15 / Deep Analysis / AEC "Smooth".
- Instant Copy 8: High Quality / 16:9 anamorphic.
The clips were extracted from these backups, and not processed individually.
They were created and assembled into compilations by using DVD Shrink Reauthor mode and "Start/End" feature.
"No Compression" was used, and both the audio and subpicture streams were removed (so as to make the comppilations smaller in size).

Hey double d, if smooth is the better setting, wonder why Mr. Shrink didn't use that for the default seeting in 3.2 instead of sharp?
I must admit I am curious now as to smooth vs. sharp.
I won't be able ot start testing until tomorrow, how long is our time frame to get these comparisons in?

"Sharp" seemed to be the best compromise, but in the case of LOTR_ROTK, "Smooth" ended-up yelding better results overal.
There is no time frame really, but the sooner the better. :D

Sophocles,
I see what you're getting at. You think its probably not an XP1700. Could be. You can run XPs in the board but the settings are manual. But if he didn't know the specifics about his setup I wouldn't think it likely.
Sisoft Sandra would be helpfull to get the specifics.

I don't know what he has but the numbers he gave me are for a real Asus board. I'm not familiar with the AMD's from the original Atholon to the T'breds, I've most built intel that is until the Barton core. Let me know because my curiosity has been peaked.

The information is good but not quite enough.
The identifier string is somewhat dependant on motherboard support for accuracy.
It would need to be an XP or low power Athlon to have the speed registered.
But it is possible because of the combination SSE might not be enabled accounting for some CCE slowdown.
You should have a CPU info screen that shows SSE enabled or not.

As I suspected, your SSE is disabled.
I figure its a lack of support for XPs on this motherboard. You'll take a substantial hit with CCE on encoding time.
Motherboards are cheap if your into that kinda work.
Although Dell pratically gives away computers sometimes. No fuss no muss.

Looks like a good system. Should get you in the 3hr range or better for the big movies. The dual channel DDR2 should help speed wise. Go for the 3.0 for a little extra money. Obviously DVDshrink should get a good boost to.
I'm running Braveheart and ROTK on Rebuilder as we speak. Do you know the time position of the original clips you sent over so I don't have to search through the whole movie.

6402, you're right about Dell, I got my 4600 dimension for 800.00-100.00 rebate! That included printer, 17" flat panel and a bunch of software.(see my system specs),It has never given me one iota of trouble in the DVD video catagory. Does everything I ask of it. I did add a couple of HD's and a video capture card and a couple of burners, but other than that it's all Dell.
They have good support too, especially after you tell 'em to give you somebody that can speak English.lol
ddlooping, I would highly recommend it! I have the 2.8, works fine, but i'm sure stepping up to 3.0 couldn't hurt.
