Hey I just got some new stuff and I'm dying to try some overclocking. This is the first time I've ever tried anything like this because I only used to have a p3 450mhz so.. not much able to be done there haha. I have an AMD Athlon XP 2800+ it is a barton as well, I also have 1gb samsung ddr400 pc3200 ram and an ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe Motherboard. Is this any good for overclocking? Basically what my problem was was that I have ram that will run at 400mhz but my processor only works at 333mhz normally? So I wanted to change it so my ram would be running faster. Unfortunately... I've checked everything out and apparently my processor is 'locked' so I don't think I will be able to do much to it. I still have the stock heatsink and fan. I've been reading this thread here and the Thermaltake volcano sounds like it does the job pretty well? But it is very loud haha. That's ok though noise is a good thing. If it's not making noise it's probably not working :D Anyways if someone could just give me some info like what to change in the bios etc. I checked my bios and I can only change my fsb to some things? Like 133, 166, 200. But I see other people that are able to change there's to like 176 or 188 etc. Do I need to change something in my bios to be able to set those odd numbers? Please reply! I want to be cool! :D

AMD Athlon XP 2800+
Samsung 1024MB PC3200 DDR400

All my other stuff sucks... it will eventually be upgraded :)

Hmmm, well I would have thought that numbers is what it is ALL about. Otherwise, why would you do it?

I enjoy doing a bit of benching, my elastic band driven system sometimes gets a work out. The thing is, is that, once you get your highest score or max out you CPU without crashing every 2 mins , you do not have much scope to get big leaps in your numbers. Hey Ho! Such is life!

Yeah, it's all for fun and to get the most out of your computer. There comes a point where numbers don't matter. I bet you cant tell a difference between the time when your computer was 2.2GHZ and 2.31 like it is now.

I have to concur with all that you chaps have said. I am one of three who are in competition with each other for 3D Mark 03 scores.

I managed to keep top score for a measily 5 days!! It is good fun & I do like to do it, 'cos you can!

I haven't noticed a difference in performance clocking my Barton, but then I didn't really expect to see one anyway! Clocking my Gainward is good for scores, but I don't overclock it too much.

All good fun, keep up the good work guys!

Kind regards,
Pulsar

Hi all, been following this thread for a while and have swapped my gigabyte 3d pro cooler for the all conquering Volcano 12, got to say this thing is seriously noisy but it keeps the temp down lovely...also i am running ddr333 memory at the mo but will be upgrading next month should i go for pc3200 or pc4200 ?

The Volcano is noisy but that means it's working (i've said this many many times!). As for your ram, I'd save the money and just get PC3200. Since you have an athlon xp 2800, then I assume that your motherboard can't do fsb speeds over 400 and if there's anything faster than that say if you were to put in the pc 4200 or whatever, Your mobo will just slow it back down to 400 or 200 as it really is. (assuming you set it that fast)

ahh right, it's just that when i go into my bios setup theres an option "cpu fsb/dram ratio" it has option like by spd, auto ,6/6, 6/5 etc.. when i play around with this it gives some really high memory mhz but having ddr333 i can't take advantage of these that's the only reason i asked as i thought i could get away with using a higher memory mhz other than ddr400 .... also i use a wireless internet connection and when i o.c past 2360ish it get's knocked out, anyone got any ideas on how to get past this with out running a cable upstairs ....many thanks J

I don't see why your wireless would go out when you overclock your computer. It doesn't seem lik ethe two have anythign to do with one another.

Ok, I got my new Volcano, and my CPU and system temps have dropped by 10deg. WOW!

I'm taking some baseline measurements, then I'll start to OC.

Thanks

Hi all. I have replaced my old AMD Athlon XP 1600 with a 2800 Barton core and I have problems before I can even start overclocking. First off, I noticed the temp jumped from 38 to 47, and higher. Perhaps my cooling fan is not rated for this. Also, I cannot run any games from CDRom. My mobo is a Soyo KT400 with 512DDR3200. When I put settings in bios back to normal, everything is fine but cpu only will run at 1240. Any help is appreciated.

You're saying that because you put in your new 2800+(congrats) your cd rom wont work? And what a temp jump! Before you start overclocking, I'd recommend a good, solid cooling fan....like a volcano 12! It will be worth the 30something US dollars. I'd check your connections inside your computer. Maybe you forgot to plug the ide cable back up. Maybe the power cable is in, which is why it can open and close. No-Cd fixes will be your savior in an issue like that *cough*cough*www.gameburnworld.com*cough*cough

No, the cdrom is working, games just won't load past the intro screens, sorry, I should have gone into more detail. When I put the settings back to normal/auto on my bios, things return to normal, and games boot from CDRom. Can the cpu be running too hot, causing unstable performance? I'm still using the fan and heatsink from the 1600.

HELLO STRYKER68
in your bios settings set the cpu frequency to manual: then put 166mhz at wich xp2800 barton is clocked (166mhz * 12.5x= 2083mhz).

another thing your mobo is suppose to run cpus 200/266/333 fsb so it should recognize the athlon xp 2800+ without any special setting in bios.

Yeah is it the stock fan? Yes, games can lock up because your computer is too unstable. What are your settings for your cpu and ram in your bios? What is the fsb and multiplier set at?

check soyo customer support maybe your mobo cant run xp2800 or the pc-3200 ddr 400 kt-400 has some problems with that memory, and try to test your xp2800 in another mobo maybe the chip has some problems.

i think after reading some reviews it is either ddr400 alone or together with the 2800+ is incompatibility problem but call soyo..

let me know

Also, there are updates at SOYO for my bios. Should I try to flash my bios with the updates? I hear this is risky.

it is risky if you dont know how to do it.
read your manual to do it the proper way remember not to shutdown or interrupt the process while flashing.

go to soyo web page download the bios flash utility and the proper bios update file
