Hi Ohballz, what about Coolermaster cases good air flow, solid build, and oh so easy to put your kit in to as it's mostly tool less...as to making your system faster do you mean 3d mark score or just generally ? you could try a different driver on your 6800GT ( top card ) say the XG[1].win2kxp76.44 HD from tweaksrus worked really well for me or you could try lower cas memory...

In very basic terms, overclocking is getting the best out of your processor, memory, or videocard without buying a better one. This would also mean making it run harder than usual while being at a stable state.

nice cases xp, i found a site that just deals in cases, (xcase.co.uk..... im from england) and found an aerocool magic case, in silver, tell me what you think with some UV and blue lighting (PIMP MY CASE!!) as for the elite part XP.. thanks but i wouldnt say elite...more done lots of homework and been very lucky, i was stuck below 2.35 for a while but that was on an asrock k7s8x, still have the board with 2500+ oc 3200+ my gf uses it, the reason i got the asus board was i didnt want to pay for 64bit mobo & cpu when i had loads of room in the 2800+ £59.00asus VS £150.00+ for AMD 64bit for the same performance. thats why we overclock i think.

Well, seems I'm having trouble oc'ing with manual settings. My mobo has dynamic overclocking function that allows the cpu to run at normal sp under no load but oc when I run programs. I've tried some of the manual settings some of you have posted but to no avail. I guess I'll have to look into an Asus mobo. It's only money after all. Bah!!!!

i was thinking about memory, i have 1Gb standard ram but its running ok, maybe i should get some corsair or kingston, but will it make a whole lot of difference? the mobo only runs 400 unless i o/c which i can do in my bios (min 120 percent) but then will the board support the o/c ram, it could be a waste of money apart from tightening the timings but i dont think i can go any lower on these sticks ( i might get 2.5cas )

ohballz sorry man i forgot your from uk.. jjejeje.
about lighting in a case i have the raid maz scorpio black and i modded with lots of led fans(8 fan 80mm) love air cooling.
about memory look it really makes difference corsair xms or kingston hyper x, or ocz platinium.
the problem with generic ram is that they are not stable when you overclock them or most generic brands wont let you set manual memory settings but.. hey if yours are runnig stable with no problem dont spend more cash just leave it as it is because every thing you have is working fine!!!
remember ^^overclocking is not just about numbers^^

What about PNY or Ultra memory? Edit* After some extensive research I have concluded the problem is with my generic memory. Who has the best deals on memory?? I've been checking TigerDirect.com, anywhere else worth a look. Thanks.

8 FANS!! i see why your temps are so low, i just changed the CAS timing to 2.5 from 3 and have been running it for about 1.5hrs on prime95... seems fine. whats the best range of timings to get? i know its lower the better but just to know what to aim for. and do i have to up the mem voltage?

ohballz as you said lower the better but the target to get depends on memory brands there are low timing memory sticks(from corsair and kingston and other companies) like 5-2-2-2.5T i dont think generic memory can run on those low timings.
about memory voltage you only increase if you overclock your memory that generates more heat!! so if you are running your mem at stock values dont mess with that.

thanx for the info, the latency is at 2.5 at the mo, i might try and get it lower, if i try and o/c my cpu anymore i might go with 1Gb of something fast, see new-egg have 1Gb corsair pc3200 for $84, that would be about £50 uk money, that sounds a bargain, and someone on the reviews got it to run at CAS 2.... any good??

Hi,
i have an athlon xp2800 in a gigabyte GA7N-400 Pro2.
it runs at about 52 idle and 62 full load, with stock HSF combo.
from what i have been reading this is high, can someone confirm this for me.
i am using everest to check temps.
Thanks

hello brapuss welcome to this thread (the best in the whole afterdawn.com).
ok those temps are high for a non overclock procesor(if not)
normal temps are any number below 50Cº lower the better.
amd says tha xp2800 frying temp is up or past 85Cº but performance decrease with lower temps like 60´s so staying below 50C is aceptable.
one other thing always compare the temps from your mobo bios(which is more accurate) to the ones in the everest app your are reading them from..
the next is to try to lower those temps. few tips:
1-big tower case: with good air flow
2-case fans: either 80mm,120mm intake or exhaust that helps(i have 10)jejejeje.
3-if your case is smalltower try to remove the side panel that helps!
4-last consider the posibility to get a bigger heatsink and fan!
5-also applay some thermal grease like artic silver 5(in case you get another hsf)
hope i help

Brapuss,
Also...another word on heatsinks...if you get another heatsink/fan, try to find a heatsink made from copper. Copper will help keep your cpu cooler (along with arctic silver :-), so it will run better. Otherwise, I totally agree with all Dr.xp's recommendations.
The sky is falling...good thing I''m not on the planet right now...

thanks for your reply, i should have said a bit more about my setup.
a little more info on my part.
I currently have an 80mm vantec stealth in the front sucking and one in the back blowing out.
I also have an 80mm fan in my side cover that blows directly onto my CPU HSF.
With these fans i think i should be seeing lower temps.
I also have a gigbyte GA7N-400 PRO2 as my main board, i have heard that these boards will read 5-15 degrees higher than most, because they use the on-chip thermistor.
I am going to re-seat my hsf tonight with some arctic silver 5.
so i will see what happens.
once again thankyou for your reply.

ok,if your are planning to use artic silver and is your first time read instrucction before if you use it wrong way you can get higher temps(if you have used arsilv before discard this).
also see in gigabyte web page maybe theres a bios update to correct wrong temps reading.
let us know.

Dr.XP.
what should i be carefull of? i have read the instructions, put a thin layer directly on the cpu core.
i really want to fix this prob. thanks for your help

ok about artic silver 5:
1-remove with alcohol 95% or nail polish remover all the remains of the old thermal grease from the cpu core(use a cotton tip that tthing to clean ears) do it very softly and from the heat sink surface.
2-after removing all the grease fron cpu core, and hsink be sure theres no particules or fiber or even a finger print either on core or hsf.
3-you can applay a small drop in the middle of the cpu core when you put down the hsink it will spread in the surface.
**important to check both core and hsink to make sure there are no particles or fibers. applay small drop in the middle.
** artic silver suppose to work within the first 200 hours cycles
that means the arsilver must warm and then cool to room temp. dont get to crazy on that use your pc as you always do within day you´ll notice the results for me i cut 5-7Cº
let us know!!

so, i dont actually spread it myself??
on the web site it says to spread it all over the core with a blade edge or a credit card.
sorry if this is a dumb question.

Well, all i can say is "HELL YES"
i stripped it down, replaced the PSU with a 500w w/ 120mm fan, removed the crappy thermal pad that was on the HSF, replaced it with ARCTIC SILVER 5(i did it like on there web page), put my new Leadtek 6600GT 128 in, and installed an extra 1.0Gb of corsair pc3200 value ram(taking the total to 1.5Gb), put it all back together, installed the drivers and, HELL YES!!!!!!
Temp is 49C on stock cooler, so theres 7 degress reduction straight out !!!
just one thing the 5v rail is at 4.25 in everest, is this ok??
ps. thanks so much for your replys

been trying to keep up with this thread of epic proportions :)
Hope i don't get slammed as my comments aren't Overclocking related but temperature related so it s fairly relevant.
I have an Athlon 2800+XP (Barton) in a tiny SFF case as per here -
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y178/creaky/P1270101.jpg
Since i bought this machine, i've been experiencing the following temperatures -
Ambient - 36C
CPU Idle - 68C
CPU working - 75C (ie dvd ripping or Seti@home)
(i use a Glacialtech 2421 Igloo cooler).
Anyway, after many hours scouring the Net for a replacement cooler, i still can't find anything that would definitely be worth buying to reduce cpu temp (guessed with limited airflow i would have to spends loadsa for a real good one). Anyway i digress. Last night i took out the stock case fan as i noticed it was blowing air in AND out, (however the ambient temperature was more than acceptable). Replaced this case fan with a YS Tech higher performance (and not much louder) fan (4pin so no variable speed) that's been lying around for years, and wow, what an improvement -
Ambient - 27C
CPU Idle - 59C
CPU working - 68C (ie dvd ripping or Seti@home).
So i've already got the CPU working temp down to the same temp that was the previous idle temp, i think an impressive gain for zero cost. (it's not down to cleaning dust out etc as i've done this a couple times recently, but not this time so i know the fan has done the trick i mean).
Next i'm gonna read thru this entire thread again to see how better to improve the cooler. What i may well do tonight is replace the fan on the Igloo cooler with another of these YS Tech (but 3pin) fans, that may well improve things even more.
And all of this on my lowly 192Watt PSU (ok i admit i havn't got a huge vid card i use the onboard video but these days 192W is considered tidgy to get by with).
