After spending a little fortune on DL discs, finally I made the first compilation which is playable by stand alone devices.
I used AnyDVD with CloneDVD on a Plextor PX-716 UF hooked on a 1394 port, using Philips 2.4 certified DL discs.
Now I can consume my six pack of beers...

yeah, i'd see several posts in this thread from people who mention it works on firewire.
but we're not all that lucky to have a burner with a USB and firewire connection, or a pc wich supplies both connections....

hey guys with laptops, i would just stop bothering with this problem like i did and buy an internal dvd writer. i got mine from newegg.com for $80, and i have been using it flawlessly for 2 weeks now. i have burned 25 dvds at 8x... i my opinion, if u have the $84 or so buy it and save yourself the hours and hours of experimenting and the many useless dvds.

Noooooooooooooooooooooo
I have gotten the SCSI error
I've had my mad dog external dual layer burner for almost a year now.
The first 6 months I had it I backed up about 150 or so dvds. After that I burned a few more dvds here and there. Just moved back home from school and went to burn a couple dvds, and got this stupid error. Never had any problems before
Right now I'm trying to figyre whether the burner got damaged or if some program on my comp is screwing with the usb 2.0
Already tried reinstalling Nero.Thurs am going to try hooking up my burner to a buddy's laptop and see if it works.
If it works on his I'll try doing a system restore. Luckily I have most of the installation programs for shareware on my external hdd.
If it turns out to be the burner I will probably get either an external that suppports firewire or an internal w/ an enclosure that does and get a firewire card for my laptop.

This is my Boom Stick !

Well, I was able to backup one of two DVDs without issue. Using my Pioneer DVR109 in a Welland USB2 external housing I used DVDShrink to redo the DVD to fit on single layer and remove menus. Then I burnt at 4x using Nero OEM. It worked fine. So, I went to do the second DVD from this series in the exact same way and now I'm getting the "scsi command aborted" shite. I updated Nero, same deal. Firmware is the latest. Is this a generalised windows issue? A Nero problem? The Nero OEM 'special offer' popped up for 40% off the full version (I'd like to put it on my laptop as Dell's bundled cd burning software sucks) but now I'm wondering if I should even bother. Here's the error log (name and serial number removed):

I just used DVDShrink to create an image and DVD Decrypter (didn't some crap EU legislation enable a corporation to kill it's development?) to successfully backup the DVD when the absolute latest version of Nero kept making coasters.

At this point I have to ask: why would anyone buy the full version of Nero when they've known about this problem for at least 18 months amd have done, to my eyes, nothing to correct it?

I guess I could try that, but windows xp tends to have driver issues in my experience, and I don't like playing with them when everything else seems to be working acceptably. Windows update's driver updates are particularly bad for this, buggering up onboard sound chip functioning and wireless network cards when you install their driver updates via windows update site.

I can try that, maybe it'll help with the Ulead data DVD burning program I tried to use to burn this which refused to go ahead claiming insufficient disk space. This is despite it's own reported values saying the space was sufficient...perhaps a data DVD vs Video DVD issue that I'm yet to become aware of? Will that even work with a stand alone DVD player, playing a DVD burned as a data DVD or do I *HAVE* to burn it as a video DVD even if the files are apparently the same?

Inexpensive but supposedly fairly reliable, when one isn't getting 'scsi command aborted' crud.

I think the only other software I have on here that this could be from is the Ulead DVD Studio 3 Suite that came with the Pioneer 107D burner that I had before. It's fairly useless, I'll uninstall it.

Is there a solution anywhere in these 24 pages? I don't have the patience to go through them. I have the USB 2.0 PCMCIA and an external DVD burner, the Plextor PX-716A. It's actually an internal in an external enclosure. When I first got it, Nero didn't give me any error code and I switch to Roxio, which it came with. Roxio gave me the SCSI error, but I somehow got non-Microsoft drivers running and it worked for a while. Since then, I've gotten the Windows updates and patches and such. Now I can't override the Microsoft drivers for anything. So, complaining to Microsoft tech support, I was told to uninstall all my USB drivers and reboot. It sort of worked.

So now Roxio has stopped working pretty much entirely for no apparent reason and I've returned to Nero which I've used for years and think I prefer (except for the limit on file name lengths which Roxio doesn't have issues with).

Well, I burned a CD just fine and switched to DVD, which became a frisbee. The second try it did the same thing. According to my log, I get the SCSI error immediately (as with Roxio), BUT Nero then reduces its write buffer a few times until it works. It then burns my DVD for about 17 minutes. In the end, when it starts to write the lead-out, I get the SCSI error again, Nero freezes up for a minute or so, then kills the DVD by not writing the lead-out. A few burned files work, but not the majority.

Here is my log of where things go wrong:

So I tried reducing to a 6x burn (burner is max 16x, DVDs are 8x). Same problem, but different error codes. It took 16 minutes to burn, then died on the lead-out again, but with a different "SCSI" error.

Hello,

I had the next problem...
I have a notebook, PCMCIA USB2.0 with Ali chip set, and Lacie DVD burner. I've tried everything(bios, dll and ...) but it does not work and I got always the same error mesage "SCSI aborted".
Last week I've bought a PCMCIA USB 2.0 with NEC chip set and the all first results with Nero are POSITIVE! I will check it again but I hope it was it!
May be it helps someone...
With best regards,
volk

Well... I have the same problem.
My DVD-Writer is a LG GSA-4163B, ROM ver. A103 (the last). It is on a Generic Enclosure, With a Myson CS8188 chipset. My computer is a Toshiba Satellite 2400-S251 laptop with 3 USB 1.1 ports. the enclosure has a USB 2.0 output. I use Windows XP, with SP2.
When I try to write a CD or DVD to it, The writing goes to, let's say, 50-60% and suddenly the controller freezes (the I/O controller light is always on), and the Writer light flashes as it would be writing. This state goes forever until I off the enclosure. Even making Nero Express (I use 6.6.0.15) stop, it only responds when I put off the writer. On this state, I even don't access my other reader, or launch Internet explorer! Sometimes my machine locks.
I have the Adaptec ASPI (4.71.2) installed, and IMAPI service disabled. My hardware is updated. Is there no solution to me?
Thanks for your attention.
Symp.

The chip in my external enclosure is an ALi chip, too.

What bugs the shit out of me is that Nero works fine when burning CDs to this enclosure! It's only DVDs that Nero has the problem with and drops the 'scsi command aborted' crap. Can you sense my frustration?

I also have the stupid scsi problem, when I try to burn on any brand +R or -R discs, but it works just fine on a Imation +RW. I haven't tried any other brands of RW discs. This would be just fine for me but of my two standalone dvd players, only one will read these discs. I have a pioneer dvr-109 in an external case. I've went through this whole thread trying to fix it and nothing has changed. I hope by some miracle someone can crack this mystery!

Hi Wiggy270,

There'll be a chip in your external case. What manufacturer made it? ALi? NEC? other?

The chip in my external enclosure is an ALi chip, too

I think (it's my opinion), the problem is that pcmcia usb2.0 with Ali chip for some reasons can't work properly with your notebook.
I've tried to burn again with a new one from nec - super.
With best regards,

I have a cheap generic enclosure and I have the same problem. Here is my configureation

Windows XP sp2 with all the patches
NEC 2500A DVD writer firmware v1.06
External USB enclosure SD-525U2ENC. Uses Myson chipset
Nero v 6.6.x.x

I have read about this being a 'bus reset' problem and that this really is a problem in the USB drivers with Windows.

But I don't understand how so many vendors are selling this product when it does not work.

Cincy.

As I wrote before I solved a problem installing properly the drivers for ALI chipset based case for my internal LG DVD burner.
If you install it properly you should see it in the system as below (sorry, it's Polish Windows, but you can guess the most important things):

http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/6867/21sg.png

Note: my LG is not USB anymore as it is "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller"
Till that time a have no coasters at all. But first time I installed those drivers as USB (by mistake), I couldn't get it as IDE ATA/ATAPI. I had to reinstall my system. Remember that.

Which version of windows are you using, and where did you download the ALi drivers from?

I'll have a search for your previous post.

version: Windows 2000 (PL)
ALI drivers v1.4.2 (not LG) and the chipset is ALi M5621.
I don't remember the site I downloaded the ALI drivers, but I found
it using google. I'm in the office now, but I can put somewhere my drivers tomorrow.

Once again!
Only such (my) configuration cures a problem, when I tried different driver (1.3.*) to try as next, it installed as USB. And it was a shit! I couldn't get IDE ATA/ATPI any more, Windows always installed it as USB device, burning DVD was a distaster. Only fresh system installation cured a problem. So, if you can't get this (IDE ATA/ATAPI), reinstall your windows.

Second thing I have auxiliary supply for my PCMCIA card so I also use it. I use HDD and DVD Burner on the same PCMCIA card so I decided to help the PCMCIA card when I burn from external HDD to external DVD burner.

I just got this error a few hours ago and have figured it out. I haven't read all 20+ pages here, so this has probably been suggested or done already. Still, just wanted to share what I tried and hopefully my solution can provide help to someone...

Burner used is an internal IDE BENQ DW1620 16x.
PC1: MSI board w/ Intel chipset, P4 2.4GHz, 1GB RAM
PC2: Abit board w/ NVIDIA chipset, Athlon XP 2200, 1.8GHz, 1GB RAM

The BENQ was previously installed on the MSI board and worked perfectly for several months using B7C9 firmware and Nero 6.3.1.18.

Then a few days ago I reformatted both PC's, updated the BIOS and Intel ATA driver on the MSI, and just the BIOS on the Abit (system wouldn't boot after installing latest NVIDIA driver, so installed what was previously installed). Put the BENQ in the Abit machine. Installed Nero 6.3.1.26. First thing I try burning comes up with this SCSI error. I upgraded the firmware to B7V9, then reverted back to Nero 6.3.1.18, both to no avail. I tried some other things suggested throughout this thread, but no go.

Next I put the BENQ back into the MSI machine and it works fine using both Nero 6.3.1.26 and 6.6.0.15, and the newest Intel ATA controllers. Next, upgrade the Abit to 6.6.0.15, put the BENQ back in and still get the same problem. Uninstalled the NVIDIA ATA controller, tried burning with the Windows controller, and BAM! It works. Next, for the hell of it, try upgrading to the latest NVIDIA driver again, and BAM! It works, and so does Nero.

Therefore, the obvious conclusion would be that there is a definite issue with certain chipsets. I did notice quite a few posts reporting problems with NVIDIA chipsets. I would check the date of your ATA controller driver. Initially my NVIDIA was from 9/02, but just upgraded to 2/05. Furthermore, I am burning on another machine which also uses an NVIDIA chipset (12/04), and have had no issues whatsoever.

OK PEOPLE!!!! I finally figured out this problem! I have a Mad Dog 16x-DVD9 external usb2. I have (no joke) wasted about 100 or more DVD-R's!! FINALLY....FINALLY figured it out! It wasn't an ASPI layer problem or any of the other software B.S. that people tell you to try. After troubleshooting for a couple of weeks...this is what did it.

Open up your external case, pull the drive out and install it internally via IDE. I know you bought it to have an external drive but, do you want it to work or what!?!? The problem the IDE to USB (the ALI PCI to USB bridge) converter inside the case. This solved all my issues:

The Semaphore timeout ERROR
The SCSI ERROR
and more!

Hope this helps a bunch of you!!!!
