OK PEOPLE!!!! I finally figured out this problem! I have a Mad Dog 16x-DVD9 external usb2. I have (no joke) wasted about 100 or more DVD-R's!! FINALLY....FINALLY figured it out! It wasn't an ASPI layer problem or any of the other software B.S. that people tell you to try. After troubleshooting for a couple of weeks...this is what did it.

Open up your external case, pull the drive out and install it internally via IDE. I know you bought it to have an external drive but, do you want it to work or what!?!? The problem the IDE to USB (the ALI PCI to USB bridge) converter inside the case. This solved all my issues:

The Semaphore timeout ERROR
The SCSI ERROR
and more!

Hope this helps a bunch of you!!!!

LOL.

cheers, we know that'll work, but the difficult bit is finding out the real cause!

Give me your e-mail address. I can send you the driver and please someone put it somewhere eg. http://rapidshare.de
I have stupid limits on the net in my office for sending something through the http.

I have to check second solution for the problem. My colleauge solved it different way (you have to buy additional hardware). First I have to check the e-mails from him.

I got the drivers, and have put them on

http://rapidshare.de/files/3674387/ALi_m5621_v1.42.zip.html

To download them, just scroll down and choose FREE at the bottom of the page.

I have not tested them yet, so use at your own risk - eSbek did mention he had to reinstall windows.

Thanks for providing these eSbek!

Hey guys,

I got it working !!!!

I think it's a hardware related issue, I'm having the same issue with a NEC ND-3500A in a ICY BOX (IB-550U) USB2.0. It gave me the same f@c.. error and costed me about 4 DVD-R discs. I used to write on an external DVD which was an internal into an external harddisk case.

So I removed the disk from my 5.25 external case, screwed out my harddisk out of an ICY 3.50 case (IB-351U-B) and put the DVD writer on top, connected it all to my laptop and started writing a DVD using Nero. It works just fine.

I'm thinking the chipset on the end of the cases is different, perhaps to take care of slower devices into the 5,25 cases.

Can anyone confirm this workaround?

I' gonna check the chips on the card as soon as my DVD is written.
If it's confirmed I build over such a print from a 3,5 case into the 5,25 case.

Hope this can help a lot of you guys

The real solution is to plug the external DVD writer into a powered usb hub. Not directly to the computer.

For some reason this stopped the scsi aborts.
It works fine with Nero too.

Others need to try it, to confirm this is the solution.

Here I'm again!
My colleague solve the problem buying USB2.0 to IDE Adapter.
Check this.
http://allegro.pl/show_item.php?item=58800938

The price is about 11EUR. It works good with the delivered on CD drivers.

Can anyone confirm my solution with IDE ATA/ATAPI instalation or it was my individual case?

I thought I had it, I replied my DVD was working fine with the print into a 3,5 external case which is meant for hard disks. I went back with the bad 5,25 case to the shop, they new about the prblem but they had one like I just returned working. So we switched the cases. My DVDwriter is working fine now in that case, the DVD writer they had also refused to work in the case I first bought.

These are two ICY BOX cases and they were visually identical. So my guess: hardware is involved, not only the drivers, because i didn't change anything on my computer.

These are cases with a power supply, so I don't see the benefit of a powered USB hub.

My advise, when it's not working, take your DVD Writer and the case and go back to the store, ask them to swap the case until you got one working, they can test it themself, if it's working at their place, and not at yours then you need to check drivers and all that stuff.

Good luck guys

Got mine working. I was unable to burn and kept getting the "SCSI command aborted" failure right away. Thanks for all the help on this forum. I'll provide info on my hardware and what eventually worked for me.

Hardware:
-Bytecc M-320B USB 2.0 enclosure (can't remember the chipset but I think it uses Ali) here is url http://www.byteccusa.com/product/enclosure/ME-320B.htm

-Pioneer A05
firmware v1.33 RPC-1 (Region Free) + 2xDVD-R + 12xRip (pressed DVDs)

-Burning Software: Ahead Nero v6 Reloaded v6.6.0.0 (not patched, original retail state)
Also I had to uncheck the DVD high compatibility mode under recorder options.

-Computer: Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop with USB 2.0 (integrated)
notes on drivers and bios: all are up to date.

-Operating System: WinXP Pro SP1a fully patched
(I don't run SP2 because I run ancient apps and classic gaming)
I had to disable the IMAPI CD Burning service.
I also had to kill the system aspi layer and just copy wnaspi32.dll (version 2.0.1.68) from the nero install to the \windows\system directory. (the latest version of wnaspi32.dll wouldn't work)
The real breakthrough for me was removing these updates from windows:
(they can be uninstalled via add-remove programs)
1. Windows XP SP1 (KB822603) Availability of the Windows XP SP1 USB 1.1 and 2.0 Update

2. 814995: Recommended Update Some Application Compatibility Fixes Stop Working After You Install the 328310 Update

Now Nero burns all as advertised and is super stable. hope this helps.

Forgot to mention other burning apps that rely on a system aspi layer don't jive with the nero aspi layer I applied to the \windows\system directory. Nero is the only burning software I've gotten to run. I wasn't really concerned with other apps as much since Nero handles everything nicely anyway.

Also to note in reference to drivers: I don't run any of those specialized intel drivers (like the IDE one) and software (like the App enhancer) for latops...just the mobile chipset drivers.

The items that made the most impact on the stability were:
1. making sure no other system aspi layer was present other than the nero one, even though nero can use the one from its own directory.

2. Unchecking the "DVD high compatibility mode" in nero's recorder options

3. Uninstalling "Windows XP SP1 (KB822603) Availability of the Windows XP SP1 USB 1.1 and 2.0 Update" from windows update via the add-remove programs.

We shouldn't have to go through all this trouble after buying a $150+ external dvdrw. These comapanies need to realize the problem and find a fix around it!

I have the same issue as all of youand for 2 wks now I have not been able to burn anything. I sent it back to the manufacture (Maddog) to get it fix and waiting for them to return it ASAP! I have a MADDOG DVD16x-EXT

SPECS:
- Toshiba Tecra A2 laptop
- NEC ND-3540A DVD-RW (Firmware 1.01) in a Bytecc ME-340 enclosure (ALi Chipset)
- Windows XP/SP1 without "Windows XP SP1 (KB822603) Availability of the Windows XP SP1 USB 1.1 and 2.0 Update"

METHOD OF INSTALLATION:

1. Installed the USB drivers located on the Bytecc CD
2. DVD-RW was connected to the enclosure and then to my computer
3. Nero 6.6.0.8 OEM was installed

*Sonic RecordNow!, DVD Decrypter & Deep Burner where already installed on my computer long before I even bought my DVD-RW drive and enclosure*

BURNING WITH NERO:

- I always leave "High Compatibility Mode" enabled when burning
- I use High Quality DVD-r media (TY) and burn it at 8x

So far so good, no scsi errors. I've burned several DVD-rs and they all seem to playback on my dvd player without a hitch. So maybe it's not the ALi chipset that is causing all of these errors it could be that Windows XP SP1 update EnsErnie pointed out.

I fixed this issue.
Had an older generic usb enclosure with dismal power ratings .3-.6A and the ALI chip set. Could never get a dvd to burn on it. After reading this post I went out and bought an expensive $80 ADS enclosure that uses a different chip set and higher power ratings. I'm burning everything fine now. I couldn't beleve it when it worked. By the way my burner is a dual layer pioneer 109

I have a confirmation from Syba technical support that the external USB enclosure containing Myson chipset CS8818 is not compatible with Windows 2000 and XP using built-in drivers.

He said that enclosures with NEC chipset are compatible with in-built drivers.

He also said that although the built-in drivers Windows 2000/XP should work, you should always install the drivers provided by the manufacturer. You may need to 'Update Driver' for that device.

Ok. I removed my dvd burner from the factory external case and installed the dvd burner as an internal ide... I get no errors whatsoever but... it seems to be burning alot slower than when it was working as an external at one point.

I've tried burning at 16x 12x 8x 6x 4x - It all takes 35 mins. to burn an image file in which it shouldn't... I dunno whats wrong...

That's weird because I just burned a full DVD-R (4.38gig) in under 7 minutes at 12x.

I have to wonder if this chipset information is a red herring. I'm wondering because Nero will burn cd's just fine, but not DVDs, to my pioneer dvr-109 in an ALi chipset based external case. DVDDecryptor will burn .iso images from DVDShrink with no issues, either. So, we have a Nero problem and it occurs only with DVDs. I've recently reformatted and resintalled winxp home on my system and tested Nero with cd burning and dvddecryptor with dvd .iso burning. The next step is to try and use Nero to burn a compilation to DVD from DVDShrink. This time I have not installed the adaptec wnaspi but am going to use the one in the Nero directory first and see what happens. I'll keep you informed.

hey dudes,

was so pride to have the pioneer dvr-109 firmware 1.57 in an external BELKIN case USB2.0..... and now i have the same sh*t like you.. "SCSI command error" with Win XP pro SP2 and Nero 6.6.0.16 adn tried with Roxio media creator 7.5 but the same....

we can build atomic bombs and space stations, but its not possible to write a software for external USB cases, or find out whats the problem is ??

well, i foun dout that when i burn with max. 2x speed its ok, 4x is critical.....
when the writer start burning and pass the 4% mark the rest will be fine.... but i can write my verbatim media only with minimum 4x speed...always praying during burning :)

pls, is the any solutions out there ? i have only a notebook, no firewire, i need USB2.0........

Does a DVDRW need to be set as the master/primary IDE for it to burn properly?

Well, same problem as before using Nero's wnaspi even without the adaptec layer installed: scsi command aborted. Nero have sent me a program to document and report the problem after I complained. I like Nero, but if a free program like DVDDecryptor can burn the EXACT SAME FILE to my external DVD writer, then why the heck should I purchase a full version of Nero if the Nero bundled with my DVD writer won't even work? Posing that question to Ahead software got me that little error reporting program sent to me. I'll be trying it out tomorrow or the next day. As always, I'll keep you informed.
