One common theme here seems to be external drives, but I'm having this problem with my internal Pioneer drive. It worked flawlessly for quite some time, then suddenly today it started doing this. Nothing changed on my pc setup that I'm aware of since yesterday when it was working fine. One thing I have noticed that I haven't seen mentioned is that all of my IDE drives (hard disks and DVD/CDROMs)are showing up as SCSI drives in Device Manager. Even my virtual DVD drives from Daemon were showing as SCSI, now they won't even load as of a couple reboots ago. Is anyone else seeing this?

To elaborate a bit more on my previous post, the first question that I was wondering about when this happened the first time was "why is Nero sending a scsi command to my non-scsi dvd drive anyway?" Since windows now seems to think that my drive IS a scsi drive, maybe that's the problem here, not Nero or any other burning program. I'm no expert as to how this would have happened, but if this is a common theme among most of us here, that may be the catalyst our friend Craig from Ahead is looking for. If this has been mentioned already I apologize, I've just skimmed through this thread...

Hi Jbirch,

Your issue is different from those reporting this issue with their USB devices.

As for the error code of 'SCSI Command Error' this is a generic command and a left over from the days when ALL recorders were SCSI only. The MMC Command set was not changed to reflect that now the tide has turned and almost all drives are now IDE based. When ever you see the 'SCSI Command Error', it really means controller error, be it SCSI/USB/IDE/Firewrite.

As for your issue, the fact that the devices show up as SCSI in your Control Panel is not good. Are you sure now driver updates occured recently, or system crashes, or any new software installed?

Have you tried reinstalling the drivers for your IDE Controller?

Craig

So craig - I heard you are the expert - i have the Nero demo version and i am trying to do a DVD-r and at the lead - in it seems like it locks but it still counts down and goes on forever - i have and external enclosure and the pioneer A04 with a dell insprion 8600 - I heard something about zeroing the drive - What is the final answer? What should i do?

Hi
I am also getting the dreaded SCSI aborted message with my new LG GSA5120D. This is with both the most upto date versions of Nero 6 Express and Roxio and I am using XP Pro SP1. The LG has both USB2 and Firewire connectivity, I have connected to my laptop via a cheap Firewire PCMCIA card (£9 sterling) and everything now works perfectly. I know this isn't any help if you don't have firewire capability but if you do give it a go and post your results.

I contacted a manufacturer of USB external cases in China and they report that the USB chip had problems that caused the DVD writer from Pioneer to fail with a scsi error with Nero software and that the chip problem has been fixed. I asked what the fix was but have no reply yet. Will pass this info along if they do reply.
I assumed that drivers need to be updated. I looked on Intel.com for my drivers and found that the Intel chipset 82801DB (came in my Dell 2400 Dimension) has been updated from 4.0 to 5.0.1.26 so I downloaded the drivers and installed them. I had to also download the DVR108 firmware (DVR108_FW114EU.exe) version 1.14 upgrade from Pioneer.com and install it.
After that I had to uninstall Nero because it would not startup.
If you look in the Device manager you will see 1 or more USB devices. I have about 4 universal Host Controllers and One USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller. If you check properties and then the driver tab, you can see the version number of the driver. Make sure each one shows the latest version for your motherboard chipset. You can have one at 4.0 and three at 5.0.1.26 etc.
I had to update drivers on 3 of them even after I installed the latest chipset update.
I think that if you update your firmware and USB drivers then everything will work ok.

Follow up, after reinstalling Nero and all the updates, I can burn a DVD rewritable at 2X speed. Nero does not show any fster than 1x and 2x speed.
It no longer fails at lead in, and took 28 minutes to burn a movie.
I am still using XP service pack 1.

How do i know the chipset of my dell Insprion 8600 to update the drivers of my USB? I as well have the 4 different USB contollers along with the USB2.0 enhanced controller. My external case is only USB 2.0. Are you saying i update the firmware of my pioneer and update the drivers of the USB and unistall Nero and reinstall and then i can burn at 1X? Even that would be great.....

Hi Blakeas,

I think the best resolution is as Kimsmith has provided. We've been working to find a 'work around' in our software to address this issue for some time. But 'work arounds' are only a patch to a big problem and is never as satisfactory in performance and reliability as going to the source of the problem and resolving it there. In this case it appears to be the Chips used in the BridgeBoard on the External drives.
As many have seen, users have resolved the issues in some cases by using another USB Controller, or another External Chassis that uses a different Chip set in the bridgeboard.

I have read the entire thread and i thought you said you could not recreate the problem on your machine? Secondly can i update the firmware of the pioneer from this external drive or do i have to put it back to the desktop? Thirdly i have a new dell inspiron 8600 just purchased from dell 3 weeks ago - should the USB drivers not be upto date already? And how do i know if they are not up to date?

Hi Blakeas,

We have not yet been able to duplicate on any of our systems with the USB External drives we have. That much is true. But we also are very, very familiar with our test systems and make sure we have the latest drivers from the MFG.

I have a user who attended this forum sending me a external Chassis that he has this issue with, and I hope to be able to duplicate it with this, to hopefully help us provide a better 'work around'. But again, work arounds are not always a good thing.

And you should be able to update the firmware as it is via External connection. Should being the key word. :-)
As for updates, you'll have to check with the MFG of the mother board or controller. In your case, DELL.

ccampbell,
Do you have any USB drives using the Myson chipset?

I have a Memorex (now reflashed to Pioneer 106D) and have the exact problem that most people are suffering from here.

The burn start - the buffer level remains at zero (most of the time) and the times just keeps marching on with a low digit percentage of "writing to disk"

It's like the process starts but something stops or blocks the burn process.

Here is a cut n paste of the appropriate section of the log where it all goes wrong.

The first report is the Pioneer and the second is my internal CD writer which works perfectly

I do have a Memorex 16x DVD External Recorder, but this is a Lite-On drive. And I am not having any trouble with it on any of our systems using USB.

And it is the same Myson chipset. I've tested on my USB1.1 and USB2.0 internal controllers. This is a generic Computer that we built, but I also tested on the Gateway computer, but that is only USB1.1

As you can guess, I also ran into this problem. I tried many of your suggestion. I have found a solution that is working for me. It required three parts.
1-uninstalled latest version of nero and reinstalled 6.0.0.28
2-uninstalled dvd shrink (I had used this instead of recode on some disks because it lets me go below 50% so the dvd could be burned).
3-forced update of all the usb drivers found in the device manager.

Have done two dvd burns with write verification without any errors. At this time only nero burning rom is installed. No other nero packages or dvd shrink is installed.

I will keep you up to date on what happens.
At this time, I not sure which one of these is the troublemaker.

If I can get 5 or more good burns in a row. I will try to go to the latest update of nero. If that works then I will add the packages.

4 burns with dvd-r no problems. Burn on cd-r on my internal cd-rw drive using copy disk function with no problem. Return to burning more dvd-r on external drive and problem returned. 3 costers. Retrying the usb driver install with current nero release. Anyone know if the problem started after installing service pack 2 for xp.

As I mentioned erlier in my posts - this problem is unpredictable. I'm sure I can burn -Rs on mine successfully, but until the problem is fixed I'm sure the success rate won't be high.. and as soon as you get your first coaster you will get only coasters until you do something like disconnect your drive or reboot your pc or burn/read +R or I don't even know what else. LIke I said before, sometimes I can't read the dvds I burned, but later can.

Question - have anyone tried burning +Rs? Have anyone had this problem before burning your first +R?

As for re-installing/uninstalling the software.. forget it!!! As I mentioned earlier, I have not have this problem on any OSs I have, but started having this problem on all of them at the same time. I'm afraid that some firmware got updated somehow.

Another question - those usb/chip/whatever else/.. driver updates via device manager.. do any of them update firmware??? If so, I might have created this problem for myself by updating some drivers when there was no need for it.

Firmware is on the drive. It take a separate app to upgrade it. I was on the factory installed version when I started getting errors. Upgrading the firmware on my Lite on 812s did not fix the problem. Had another three burns with out any problem after manually installing the usb drivers. Also have upgraded to 6.6.0.1. I also have the lastest version of Anydvd installed but is disable. Thank God I buy dvds in blulk.

blakeas,
I have been out of town for a few days and just got back.

You say you have a Dell Inspiron 8600 and according to a google search it looks like that computer is a laptop and uses the Intel® 855 PM chipset on the motherboard. You have to look on the Intel.com website to see if there is a version update to the chipset. Some time Dell has its own latest version you can download from them.
So go to http://support.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/CS-009239.htm and download the latest driver.
You can check the version of the driver on your computer if you are using XP by going to CONTROL panel, system icon, hardware tab then DEVICE MANAGER BUTTON. Go to the bottom and RIGHT CLICK on the driver, then left click properties.
Click on the DRIVER tab and you will see the driver version. If it is older thanthe version indicated on intels website then yo uneed to download the new one.

The exteranl case can have any chip in it like Ali, Cypress, etc. You need to find out who the manufacturer is then go to their website to find the latest firmware driver for it. This will be a BIN file or EXE file you download. It is reccommended that you do not power down anything while running this program as it can crash. It essentially write new assembly code into the EPROM chip in the USB external device. That will update the external case to the latest version firmware.
This is not a workaround, this is a requirement to get the computer chipset, USB firmware up to date. It is possible that you can purchase a new Dell and have outdated drivers as some manufacturers update their drivers frequently.
While you are looking at DEVICES then be sure to check you DVD/CDROM for the latest drivers from that manufacturer. Click on the driver tab and check them all. After all drivers on my computer were updated, then yes, I could burn anything at 1x or 2x speed. Note that this is with Nero software and Roxio Media Creator. Neither allow fater burns yet but I have not pursued it.
I will now though. Good luck.

Hi everyone.... I too am still experiencing the problem, but only when using USB2. I have not had any problems with USB1 on any of the three notebooks I've used - Toshiba Sattelite and IBM Thinkpad throught a PCMCIA USB2 card, and with a Toshiba Tecra with inbuilt USB2 ports. The problems exists whether the machines have SP2 installed or not - The Tecra has never had SP2 installed. I will be chasing down the external case's manufacturer to see if updates for their firmware exists. - will keep you posted on results.

I've been following this thread and also have the same problems. I use Alcohol 120% mostly though. Its a new Pioneer 108 in an external case, bought from www.svp.co.uk. Whenever I try to use it in Nero or Alcohol with USB, it fails staright away with the 'SCSI command aborted' error and the equivelent in Alcohol. But when I connect it with Firewire it burns at 1x but fails at 4x half-way through.

I just picked up a 50 cakebox of the 8x Fuji +R's that is on sale at BestBuy for $20 this week. They turn out to be Taiyo Yuden T02... great deal.

I burned one at 16x over USB2! and that's with the source data coming from an external USB2 hard drive. I didn't know USB2 had enough bandwidth to handle that much throughput.

I was tickled that it finally worked, and at max speed.

NOW - is there anything fundamentally different in the beginning of a -R or +R burn? This seems like it would solve my problem.

In a nutshell, are all of us r having the same problem? Is it always and only with USB2 and -R/RW? May it be because of the chipsets in the cases? Mine has an ALI 5621 based board.

I ask this last question because I had to return an Argosy case. Its Prolific based Firewire implementation was unable to let me copy long files from a Seagate HDD. The error I received was in same way similar.

I mean, it may be an error caused by a deficient USB/IDE bridge hardware instead. In my case with Firewire it *was*.

Craig, have you tested cases based on the ALI5621? Can you guys confirm the chipset involved in each succesful/faulting implementation?

Regards,
Rolando.

Hi Zappacor,

We have not been able to isolate this to any one chipset. It takes time to get samples of these External chassis. We are still working on this of course, but we have to be very careful and very sure before we come out and point the finger at any MFG. :-)

We would first need to provide the MFG with our results and give them a chance to test, confirm, and respond.

Craig,

I understand what u say, makes sense.

If it useful 4 u, my case uses the ALI5621 4 the USB and the Oxford's OXFW911 4 the Firewire. My laptop is a DELL Latitude C640 with Win2K and all the patches provided by Windows Update installed on it.

To be honest I've not tried 2 burn through its onboard USB1.1 port, I always used the USB2 ones from an Adaptec AUA1411 PCMCIA I also have.

With this PC-Card, *no* any problem with +R/+RW but it's *impossible* 4 me with -R-/-RW's. However, it's always OK when interconnecting the case and the AUA1411 by means of their FW ports instead.

I think this may confirm the theory of the problem been caused by something in the USB/IDE bridge.

Just my 2 cents. Rgrds,
Rolando.

My board is a ASUS p4p800. It is using the usb2 driver supplied by windows. I reinstalled a ghost image I made when windows was first installed and installed it on the d: drive. It is pre xp sp2. I have no issues using Nero 6.6.0.1 and Anydvd on this partition so far. My sp2 partition is still acting strange. Since reinstalling Nero, Anydvd, and the usb drivers, no errors. However, disk made with Nero burning rom are getting crc redundancy errors when trying to read in a dvd rom drive and one of my dvd players can't read the Nero recorde disk made.
