For those of you who have XP with service pack 1, read this Microsoft article. It pertains to the USB problem. Not saying this will fix your problems.
Those who already have service pack 2 installed for XP, you should update your firmware from the DVD writer manufacturer.

colfin, I belive limited success is what most people have. I can probably successfully burn half a dozen of -R, but once I get an error every disk will fail until I either reboot my pc or dvdrw (not sure what exactly makes it work)
This problem is sporatic, but something triggers it.
I also think it's some sort of problem with power via USB, since usb is sharing it's resources among all usb devices, but I have successfully burned -Rs in the past (with success rate of 100%) with all my usb devices connected. The issue is either with enclosure or with the system itself, but not the OS. Unfortunatly (or fortunatly) I don't have any -Rs left, so I can't try it on my laptop which I used to successfully burn about 2 dozens of -Rs. Once I get -Rs I'll give it a try and post it here.

kimsmith, no you are wrong. OS and service packs have nothing to do with this issue. Read all my posts (I probably have half a dozen of them here)

Well it may help if I put the link in the message,

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;820759

According to Microsoft, "Problems Occur When You Run a Program That Accesses a USB 2.0 DVD Drive or CD-RW Drive" This is from the technet knowledge base.
I have no problems with my usb 2.0 external case burning DVD -R +R or CDROMS now that updated my firmware, USB drivers etc, using Roxio or Nero.
Although it may start failing again any day.

I wonder if simply disconnecting the exhaust fans might allow more power to the chipsets?

I'll try that on mine right now and see if that helps.

Hello Everyone,

In regards to increasing the power on the External chassis, I would not say this is the solution or that the Chassis MFG's are using poor power sources. From my findings, the power source in the chassis I've tested should have been more than sufficent.

Being in a lab, I was able to use a spare power source for a computer chassis, and simply plug directly into the recorders. Prior to doing so, I would get intermitant failures at 2.4x write speeds, and consistant error messages at 4x write speeds.

I'm still doing more testing to try and isolate the issue. I still need to test with different brand and types of media, and look into drivers.

Well unplugging the exhaust fan made no difference whatsoever for me anyway.

I can't see anyway of altering the voltage unless a soldering job is undertaken and that kind of defeats the purpose of a $19.99 (shipped) external drive chassis in my opinion.

I think the next step is for me to try a different DVD Writer - does anybody know offhand if the Pioneer drives take more power?

Pioneers appear to crop up pretty regularly in this thread - unless I'm just noticing it due to using one myself?

Tell it like it is - NOT how it should be!

I was going to increase the power, but I figured I should test it before going to the trouble. I left everything the same, but powered the drive from a spare computer power supply. I still received the same error.

As Craig stated from the very beginning of the thread and as it is obvious when reading through the posts: The SCSI command error messages are generic and can be caused by a number of different things which is what makes this such a tough nut to crack. Hence, I don't think there will be any one solution to make these problems go away. One workaround will work for a few for which the problems have a similar source, and the rest will have to wait for another possible workaround applicable to their source of the SCSI error messages.

Regarding the media, +R or -R did not matter in my case. Both would coast before, and both work after Craig came up with a workaround that worked for my case (see my previous post).

Regarding the power supply, compare the labels on your recorder and on the power supply in the external enclosure to confirm that the supply can deliver more Amperes at 5V/12V than the drive requires. If so, this shouldn't be your problem (assuming the labels can be trusted). That's an easy check. For the Pioneer DVR-108 owners, I doubt this is your problem. As far as I remember other burners consume more power, and I put mine in a cheap enclosure bought on Ebay (believe it is identical to a Bytecc ME-320U). I can now burn DVDs at up to 12X (can't try 16x due to media) without problems. Also, the enclosure carries the Ali M5621 chip, so this doesn't have to be a problem either.

To me it appears as if most problems are really software related which means they can hopefully be fixed with new versions of drivers, firmware and not least Nero. If your patience doesn't allow you to wait for these 'childhood diseases' to be cured I would recommend trying firewire instead if it is an option. Firewire enclosures appear to be more reliable. I tried my burner in a 2+ year old firewire enclosure, and it worked flawlessly, burning DVDs at 12x.

Hi, I use a NEC-2500 and have 2 external enclosures. I also ran into the problem with the SCSI error / power calibration error when writing DVD+R. Switching the drive to the other enclosure (with firewire and USB2) gave the same problems. I used an unofficial firmware version (2k5107v2b5dl.exe) to get DL possibility. After installing the latest official firmware 1.07 by NEC the problem was solved and it burned without any problem!

First off, I've only read a few pages of this stuff so far. I am also experiencing this type of problem when trying to burn DVDs using a usb2.0 enclosure.

My experience so far:

I got myself one of the new dual layer dual media drives and put it in an external case (CD510-U2 by CoolMax) then tried burning from my Toshiba laptop.

This first try was successful but the laptop only has usb1.1 ports on it.

After waiting entirely too long for <5gig of data to burn I took the drive and plugged it into my desktop. This one just got the motherboard upgraded a few months back so it has usb2.0 built-in. Using the same drive and same enclosure with the same version of Nero gave me a Communication failure message from Nero early on.

I then took the drive out of the case and put it in as an internal drive and burned just fine. I put the drive back in the enclosure and proceeded to fiddle with all kinds of things. I setup a dual boot for Win98 and WinXP Pro got all the latest drivers for the motherboard, the enclosure and the operating systems. No matter what I tried I still had no success in burning DVDs. While playing around with VIA chipset drivers for the USB2.0 controller I got two different results: 1) I'd get a frozen progress bar in Nero where the clock would keep running but the drive was totally unresponsive 2) I'd get a SCSI sense error and Nero would report a communication failure and exit gracefully.

When the burner froze the only way to get it out of that state was to force Nero to end then power cycle the drive. I'd usually reboot the computer too at this point.

The really annoying part is I took this exact same drive and enclosure and cable and power adapter plugged it into a computer with an SiS USB2.0 controller and using the same version of Nero I can burn flawlessly. I've got upwards of fifteen discs burned with this setup.

My theory so far is that the drivers for certain USB2.0 host controllers are incomplete or buggy and Nero is tickling some weak part of the interface. I'm betting it's something to do with command queuing from everything I've seen. So far I'm almost positive this is a software issue. Probably, the chip specific usb drivers.

I'd be interested to see what kind of controller chips people are seeing this problem with.

Anyone here want to blow this theory out of the water?

Hi all,
I'm happy (not really) to see that I'm not the only one to have this trouble.

Last week I just come to buy a Pioneer DVR-108 and an external enclosure usb2.
I connected the burner in the enclosure and then the enclosure is linked to my laptop (acer tm 803) via usb2.

I try to read some cd and dvd-rom no problem.

After that I try to burn some dvd-r (ridisk 4X) and dvd-rw (Traxadata 2X)

And most of times I have the same error as you :
"SCSI Command Aborted"

But it's very strange because somtimes I can successfully finished a simulation (with dvd-r) and the same simulation 5 minutes later will failed.
I have the same problem with cd-r but here again I have burned perfectly a cd-r (a lukky moment perhaps).

On my laptop, I have :
WinXP PRO SP1
Nero 6.3.1.25
Firmware 1.14 for the burner (the last firmware)

Here are the log of a faied try to burn a dvd-rw :

kimsmith > you said that you have no more problem after the update of your usb driver.
Can you explain with details what you did to update your driver ?
For me, in the device manager, right-clic on all entries related to usb and then "update drivers" but I have always a message that say that windows can not found a best driver for this device.
And did you apply the patch that you mentionned in : http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;820759
??

Concerning those you have try their enclosure via firewire, perhaps the firewire is more stable than usb ...

Thanks a lot for your help and sorry for my poor english ;)

I have a Dell C640 with an AUA1411 PCMCIA, which has both USB and FW. My external case also has both.
When connect both by means of the USB, it DOESN'T work (I receive the error). When I use the FW everything goes OK.
This is why I'm NOT completelly sure about the power supply been the root cause.

For those interested in a firmware hack to make you Pioneer go to a higher buring rate. Go to
http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?t=29958

This is a fellow that can hack firmware for DVD writers. Maybe we should all ask him to make a USB hack update.

In reply to Fred21,

You have updated the firmware on the Pioneer to 1.14, You need to check with Acer to see if they have a newer driver for you Intel Chipset on the motherboard. If so, update it instead of using a microsoft update.
This chipset is what controls the signals to the external case.
Make sure you have the latest bios update which I think is V4A20 on that laptop.
Good luck.

I too had the dreaded SCSI error message. I was using an LG GSA-4160B drive in a generic enclosure. After reading this thread I checked on the voltage specs of the drive and enclosure:
Drive: 5V/12V - 1.5A/2.0A
Enclosure: 5V/12V - 1.5A/1.8A
only 0.2A missing?
I happen to have a old enclosure (also generic) I no longer used because it didn't support larger than 128GB drives but seemed to have a much more massive power supply. The voltage specs of this enclosure is: 5V/12V - 3A/3A
I tried it with the LG drive, guess what, it is now working perfectly! Besides I don't need >48Bit address for DVD drives.

But I wonder if Nero can get around this by powering the drive artificially attempting to stabilize the voltage levels before trying any data operations.

Hi everyone,
I am using a dvr108 burner (external usb 2.0) and have had no problems with it till today (scsi command aborted). I backtracked everything i installed yesterday and deleted everything step by step, checking if Nero works after each delete. I am running windows xp sp. Nothing worked until i deleted an update of nvidia i got from the microsoft update page. After deleting all the nvidia crap, burner is back up and running great. I don't know if this helps but I thought I would share my experience.

Interesting. I also have a very basic nvidia mx420 card and also have updated it. In device manager it reads as:
NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 420
Driver date 10/6/2003
Driver Version 5.2.1.6

I just clicked on "Rall Back Driver" and now I have
NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 420 (microsoft corporation)
Driver date 4/7/2004
Driver Version 5.6.7.3

Seems like version check is not working with either Microsoft/Dell/GeForce files. I don't remember how I updated it. Don't have -Rs to test though.

Yesterday I bought a firewire cable to link the enclosure to my laptop as my enclosure support usb2 and firewire.

I had only time to make 3 tests (simulation on dvd-r, write on dvd-rw and simulation on cd-r) and all the 3 tests were successfull.

I will make more test this evening.

Well, I took the plunge and moved the burner into the pc. The scsi error stop, but now the disc are showing bad blocks. I have change over to sony 8x dvd+R now and have had great success. After I get caught up on my burning I will try moving it back to the usb enclouser and try again with the dvd+Rs. Can't see why power would be an issue in the enclouser. I disconnected the case fan in my enclouser so the fan would not rob the power. Could it be a power issue on the controller side. Has anyone tried burning with only the usb burner plugged into the usb controller.

Hello everybody,

I have a Pioneer 107 in an enclosure U2EIDE525-A1.
Sometimes I have the fuck.. message "scsi command aborted" when I burn with Nero. I use an laptop HP NC6000c, it is an P4 M 1600mhz with 512 MB ram.
I have upgraded all it is possible: Security updates, Bios, drivers, Nero and firmware of the Pioneer.

With DVD-rw I have never the error.
But DVD-r or DVD+R (Princo, Memorex, Traxdata, Maxell, ..) only sometimes I have the error.

With other burning software I have others error but allways the buring faild.

In my case the problem comes when starts the leading- on.

I think that voltage and the amperage of the enclosure are not the problem. In this case I don't understand why sometimes the burning is complete and sometimes not.

In the back of the inclosure, there is 2 leds. One red and one green. When both leds are ON the burning is successfully. When one led is OFF, I unplug and replug the cables (power and usb) and restart the inclosure until the 2 leds are ON.

Srange NO ?

I checked the voltage reading the actual specs written on the labels of the enclosures and drives.

Just bought the dvr-108 (external-USB 2.0), if I thought there was so many problems might have gone with another recorder. Same problem, "scsi commmand aborted" using Nero and lead in errors. Updated aspi, re-installed Nero, even followed some suggestions but nothing is working. Luckly using a dvd-rw and just erasing to keep cost down. I can't believe its the OS or hardware. I finally read a suggestion using another software to burn images and my god it worked, every time!!! Have not had one bad disk after 7 trys. Dump Nero and switch to NTI cd & DVD maker. Will keep my fingers crossed still.

What is strange is that it seems most of us can burn using the USB 1.1 spec.

As soon as we try to use USB 2.0 then we have a problem.

Does USB 1.1 use less "power" than USB 2.0?

I suspect the chipset (driver!) is the main issue here?

Tell it like it is - NOT how it should be!
