Hi Jrkn,

You should never rule out Microsoft as the cause. Lord knows they are the cause of so many other issues. But I do not have any contacts at Microsoft to properly get this looked into. And its' true these same drives have no troubles under Linux.

Hey guys, newbie here but with some info that might help. CyclerJim made mention of discovering he was connected to the web before he could have a sucessful burn. ypelchat killed processes to get it to burn right. Well, I was searching for info on a root kit (hacker tool) found on my pc that uses 'd347prt.sys'- which is a valid Micro$oft SCSI miniport driver- to hijack a machine invisibly using legitimate services and protocol. Maybe the SCSI errors are coming from the root kit trying to connect while you are trying to burn using a SCSI drive or a drive that utilizes a SCSI miniport (software-emulated interface for perhaps a USB drive). I burn with a Sony DVD+-R/RW with an IDE/ATA interface, so this condition doesnt affect my burning ability. However, my SCSI DVD-ROM drive hasnt worked right for a long time. I recommend anyone experiencing this condition do a Google search on root kits and the d347prt.sys file and try to find a virus scan software to repair the condition or learn how to identify and remove it manually. Just from what I've learned so far this runs DEEP. I used RKSHARK.EXE available from www.advances.com to discover the root kit on my machine but the free version wont remove it. I may be wayyy off base here, but you never can tell. If all else fails you should consider it. I'm going to swap out the DVD-ROM into a different pc and see if it works. Good luck to ya.
P.S. I burn Sony disks, rip with latest DVDecrypter to .ISO file, compress and back-up to .ISO with latest DVDShrink, mount image in D-Tools Daemon virtual DVD-ROM and burn with either DVDX-Copy, Veritas RecordNow or DVDecrypter. Burned hundreds this way, even the RPC protected ones I had trouble with. Hope some of this helps! :-)

I recently bought a Zynet 5.25" USB 2.0 Enclosure and a LG GSA 4163B 16x Multi-Format Internal DVD Burner. I'm in Region 4 (Australia) and I'm trying to burn VCD and SVCD's (they are in .bin/.cue format) to CD-R. I've tried: Nero (it came with the drive), burnatonce (with ProDVD installed correctly), VCDEasy and none of them will do it. The only things I've had a successful burn with are Princo DVD-R's from DVD-9 back-ups using DVD Decypter and DVD Shrink (and burning with DVD Decrypter).

I've tried ForceASPI 1.7, ForceASPI 1.8 (which uses the latest Adaptec drivers because the .exe on the official site is a 16-bit application which won't run at all). I've tried the Nero ASPI layer also. I tried changing the name of the Nero ASPI layer and using only ForceASPI 1.7 or ForceASPI 1.8 and it wouldn't burn.

I've wasted so many CD-R's and a few DVD-R's too.

It seems the only why I'm gooing to be able to burn something is if the program can burn .bin/.cue images (I want to leave the chapters intact) without using Nero or those other programs above. Perhaps converting the .bin/.cue images to something else?

Or burn them to DVD (what one-click tool would do this?).

Here's the system I'm trying to burn on:
Toshiba Satellite 1130 Laptop
1.8ghz Intel Celeron (P4 Based) 1.8Ghz Mobile Processor
256mb DDR Ram
Windows XP Pro SP1 (Fully patched and updated)

Here is my Zynet 5.25" USB2.0 Enclosure
http://www.zynet.com.tw/download/DM/CD-R3.jpg
And manual: http://www.zynet.com.tw/download/manual/ee/cdr3u2.htm
There is only firmware for it for win98.

The burner I have once again is a LG GSA 4163B 16x Super Multi DVD/CD Rewriter.
I also upgraded the LG GSA 4163B to the latest Firmware, Version A103.

I also have an external 3.5" usb2 hard drive enclosure that runs fine so I already have the enhanced usb2 drivers.

It seems like I'm not the only one with this problem.
Like I said, I can burn DVD's using DVD Decypter and DVDShrink fine. It's just CD-R's I'm having trouble burning. Oh and don't even suggest installing SP2, that would be the last thing I'd do.

I just need some software or something that can burn .bin/.cue to CD-R with an External DVD Driver setup.
Or to burn VCD/SVCD to DVD with a minimum of fuss.

My other computer doesn't have the hard disk space (only has a 6.1gb drive) nor the CPU (an AMD K6-2 550) to handle DVD burning so I don't want to install the burner into it.

Please help. Lots of people are having this problem and it doesn't seem to be getting fixed.

I had some success. I converted .bin/.cue to CloneCD format (.img/.ccd/.sub) with UltraISO 7.5.2.986 opened up CloneCD 5.1.0.0 clicked on "write image to disc" and put the speed at 8x. It did it's thing successfully and my standalone plays it as it should like it has chapters and everything. CloneCD uses it's own ASPI Layer, Elby something so that's probably why it works.

It would be good if we had a list of software that does work with External USB2.0 DVD-Writers (firewire too, if that doesn't work either).

I know these apparently seem to work:
Roxio Easy Media Creator
CloneCD (perhaps CloneDVD does too) (worked for me).
CopyToDVD (worked for someone else in this thread).
DVD Decrypter + DVDShrink (I was able to copy and burn several large DVD's to DVD-R with this combination.

It seems that software that uses it's own ASPI layer and not Nero seems to work. Some work with the system ASPI layer, some don't.

Could you please add what does and doesn't work for you in this thread please?

part of a reply i posted on another similar thread -

As for the Linux angle, very good call, i'd been pondering that side of things as i use Solaris for work and Linux as a sideline hobby. To me it just seems we're all almost blinkered (ie by looking at this in purely just the Microsoft world) in this whole enclosure issue and even though Linux may bring a lot of unknowns into the equation, it could also prove (for instance) that it's down to usb drivers or something.

My gut feeling from what i've read so far (i think there's a similar epic discussion going on over on cdrinfo or cdfreaks forums, can never remember where) is that it's a usb driver type thing so Linux comparisons could certainly go a long way to proving/disproving the power issues etc etc.

I think it's an ASPI Layer issue and how the program sends commands to the ASPI Layer.
But I won't know more until I get a DVD-RW and CD-RW and test with a bunch of software.

For now I know this:
DVD Decrypter 3.5.3.0 SPTI (Works)
Clone CD 5.1.0.0 using it's own ASPI Layer (Works)
Nero Express that comes with the burner which uses it's own ASP Layer (Doesn't work)
BurnAtOnce SPTI (Doesn't work)
VCDEasy SPTI (Doesn't work) VCDEasy latest Adaptec: ASPI (Doesn't work).
I'll have to test with the Adaptect 4.60 layer using forceaspi 1.7

My USB2 drivers are fully updated to the latest version.

My enclosure output uses 5V=2A and 12V=2A, from an input that can use a few different power sources but ours in Australia is 240V.

I will test with Win98SE partition as the enclosure has drivers for it.

Hey Guys,

Ive racked my brains for weeks trying to work this one out.

And FINALLY heres what worked for me.

My enclosure came with a drivers disc which i only assumed was for win98 etc. as XP has auto detect etc. So i never bothered to install anything from it, well as a last resort, i put the disc into my laptop, installed the "USB STORAGE TOOLBOX" installer and WHALLA!

I cant believe it took me this damn long to do something as simple as installing the programs on the DISC that COMES with my external enclosure!

Since installing that disc, ive tried every combination with both Nero and dvdshrink, burning both image files as well as dvd movie files etc. and its been faultless!

I will be uploading the software to my personal webspace for anyone interested in downloading it and trying it out asap. and will link it here.

Im pretty sure its generic and shit if it helps even ONE person, we are one step closer to working out this issue.

Let me know if anyone wants it, and ill post the link for you to download.

Thanks.

Yeah could you please link it up along with the brand and model of your enclosure.

I have a few drivers for win98 on my disk too and not just for my model enclosure. So I could probably put them up aswell.

I'm going to try the same with mine.

Ok I tried it and it installed the win98 drivers only for my enclosure most others said "works only on win98".
Now I've got a new folder in programs called USB Storage.
However I hasn't fixed my problem.

I did do something different and tried burning an Audio CD using mp3's to .cda method using Nero Express and it worked.

However it still won't burn any VCD images (SCSI command aborted) even if I convert them to .nrg format. Also burn at once doesn't work any better either.

So this is bizarre. Making an Audio CD with Nero Express works but burning a VCD image does not.

I'd try some more tests but the CD-R's I got are a friends and they are supposed to be for VCD's (which I can do with CloneCD).

I still don't think it's a usb or power issue, at least in my case. As some software works and others don't.
And in Nero's case burning an Audio CD works while burning a VCD image does not. Explain that one too me.

I'm thinking about taking my enclosure back along with the drive and just getting the LG External Drive.

OK,

For all of you that wish to give it a go, heres the link to my site with a zip file containing my setup files for my USB enclosure.

http://web.aanet.com.au/ryanpowell/

It will create a new program folder called USB STORAGE TOOLBOX.

Im not claiming it will help ALL of you, but it certainly saved me alot of grief to the point where i was contemplating selling my DVD burner etc.

Im now burning with 100% success, no more coasters! haha

Goodluck guys!

Thanks
Ryan

I installed it, it seems I have a new non-ms signed atapi drive in both ide controllers and the usb mass storage drive says "complete storage driver" or something instead of "Standard mass storage drive".
Does yours say the same? Otherwise it could've been me trying to install stuff from a disc I got with another enclosure.

My problem is still there. I can't burn chaptered VCD or SVCD in .bin/.cue, .nrg or .iso format. With Nero Express or Burnatonce. I haven't tried burning any DVD's yet.
However I am able to burn audio cd's and data cd's.
I found a cd-rw disc (Nero Express and Burnatonce will both erase it which is ironic). I'd try and make a VCD and SVCD with just the mpeg file (which I can extract with VCDGear). Would be good if burnatonce worked because it pretty much does everything Nero Express does. I might try making a data cd and audio cd in that burnatonce aswell to see if it's only with VCD and SVCD images like in Nero Express that it has burning problems with.

CloneCD can burn images either if I convert them to it's format with UltraISO or mount the image with Daemon Tools.

So looks like I can pretty much do what everyone else can with their burners, I'll just have to use different programs for VCD and SVCD images.

It's not a fix but it'll do until some new software comes out that solves the problem or current software is fixed. I'll do more tests and then post all the logs to the burnatonce forums.

I don't know if this usb driver has helped me to burn audio and data cd's with Nero, as I hadn't tried them before. It doesn't seem to have hurt though.

Strange that I can only burn certain things with certain programs.

Hi all, I've been following this thread. I bought a gericom external DVD writer. I believe that the root of all the problems is software.

Here we go;
Now before re-installing XP I couldn't burn CD's at all (it would hang at/before or shortly after lead in), DVD-R (burned at least 7 costers and 2 decent DVD movie) haven't tried DVD+R yet.

NOW
Re-installed windowsXP, patched to SP2, installed Nero OEM (Apart from McAfee Security this is all I installed)

What happens, I can burn CD and DVD without a hitch at all. Nothing wrong whatsoever. Then I install Alcohol 120% (latest version) and bang, downhill, same problem.

So i went fishing and it turns out alc uses it's own aspi interface (as do most software). I told it to use the system installed aspi. CDs now burn but still a problem with DVDs (hangs half way).

It is obvious that there is a conflict (either with Nero or alc [they obviously don't get along] or files get written over etc.]

I reckon it's not a windowsXP problem [If only that was true all the time, windows eh] because the built in XP burning software works perfectly in this situation.

I'm going home now to install the update to Nero and if that fails, take the writer out of the encloser and put it into the tower and see if that fixes the problem, i'll let ya know.

for folks here having problems with USB 2.0 Cardbus with NEC based chipset having problems on writing to an external USB connected CD/DVD writer, you may use this latest USB 2.0 driver, it helped in my case, its already version 2.1.11.1, usual ones are lower than this.

Forget all about the SCSI discussions and the real and only answer to the USB DVD writer problems everyone has encountered is relatively simple to explain. When using USB devices, there is NO WAY to reserve additional bandwidth for the external burners which is why most of us have many USB devices installed and have this problem. The simplest solution is to create a new profile and disable those devices that you will not need when burning or simply unplug them from your system. The extra profile is for Windows XP users and those of us familiar with using additional profiles. If you are unfamiliar with profile creation please refer to Microsoft's knowledge base for the steps necessary. Any number of USB devices consume power and bandwidth and unfortunately USB does have limitations although the manufactureres would lead you to beleive otherwise. Think of it this way, turn on all the lights in your house and watch the electric meter spin faster. As with USB devices it is highly recommend placing your DVD writer on USB port number ONE. So to recapp the solution, unplug unnecessary USB devices while burning or simply create a seperate profile and disable those devices not imperative to the operation of Windows. Problem solved!

If only it was that simple. Even on a clean install of win XP with nothing but the dvd-writer connected, I got the error. Putting it in the first usb port does not seem to do anything for me - i have even tried the usb ports on the front of pc-case.

I am not saying your solution will not work - it just did not for me.

With that said, my problem seem to have miraculously solved itself. I am actually not sure why it works all of a sudden. I have been burning on usb port for several months now. I think it has something to do with updating my windows usb drivers(via), but as I said I´m not really sure.

I would not be surprised if your suggestion will solve the problem for some. But in my experience there is no universal solution that actually works for everyone encountering this problem.

If the problem was with the usb channel's bandwidth, wouldnt that rather cause a buffer underrun, than being completely unable to burn?

Has anyone tried burning with their External Enclosed USB2 Drive with Linux?

If I knew how I'd make a Live Linux CD primarily for burning on these drives.

I wonder if people have more success with Linux than WinXP with these drive setups.

i haven't used mine under Linux, but i do use both my Belkin enclosures without incident under win2000. have used my Sony DRU-700A thru usb2 under 3 different machines using Win2000. Use a 20GB ATA100 drive under usb2 under Win2000 and constantly use my LG 4480B CD Burner/dvd reader for ALL my many 100s of ripped dvd's, ie i rip nearly every single movie thru this enclosure under usb2

Hi,

I need help. I have a IBM T40 and an external Sony DRU-510UL DVD+/-RW Drive. It used to be working fine before. Then few days ago, the buffer level goes up and down while burning with Nero. I have defrag my hard drive. Check the hard drive is in DMA mode. And uninstall all of the USB driver and reinstall with the latest ones (built-in from Window 2000 SP4). It is still the same. It takes 1.5 hrs to burn a DVD now. Sometimes it will failed with Ritek DVD-R. Below is the log. Pls help!

Your best bet is to get in touch with Ahead, makers of Nero and post them your log. It means nothing to most people here. It only means something to programmers and since Ahead programmed Nero, they would be able to make more sense of it than anyone else.

We're talking about problems with Internal drives in External Enclosures. Not External Drives.

PROVEN solution...

1. Update to Latest NERO
2. Install FORCEaspi
3. Install any installation files on CD supplied with your external case (mine found here if you need one http://www.ammoteen.tk)

THEN finally this is the MOST IMPORTANT step :-

4. Go To > MY COMPUTER > Find your new external drive > RIGHT CLICK > PROPERTIES > RECORDING TAB > TICK enable recording on this drive. ***IMPORTANT!*** you may have to check this every time you connect your burner or on startup.

THIS has been proven to work successfully for many people on this forum.

Good Luck

d-503, there are lots of ppl on this very
forum who can decode the Nero errors, i find
their info v helpful as i don't always see
what to look for myself (i don't have nero
probs but like to keep an eye on the errors so
many ppl get in case i do ever run into
probs).

rdpowell - good tip, but that'll only work in
XP, not everyone (granted, most are i think)
in this thread using XP

but good work fellas, keep beavering away, i'm
avidly watching this thread incase i ever need
to buy new enclosure
