@yoni55 - six hours is a tad excessive ! , at 4x you should be looking at 15mins tops!. post another section of log for the 2 new media (and an exact description of the media) and will try to help some more..

ps try downloading dvdinfopro, there's a trial version you can get that i think's good till 25th April (they always put a new trial up each time). Anyway install that and it will tell you the media code of your discs. However the burn log will do that anyway. you can also do an error test etc with that proggie once you've written to the disc..

Hi there

IBM T40 has an interesting feature, i.e. its USB chipset is not normally recognized properly by the system, so that when you try to install USB drivers (that's the case when you have deinstalled them) then it just installs USB 1 controller, and not the USB 2 one.

In order to fix it , you need to go to IBM page and download chipset fix (see details valid for Windows 2000/XP) :
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-50838

By the way, if I'm here it's because my external USB DVD Burner fails continuosly and I tried all hints in this forum, even hoped in second fresh/clean XP installation but didn't help.

I'm thinking about a partition with Linux for burning.

Bye

I need help. I have a IBM T40 and an external Sony DRU-510UL DVD+/-RW Drive. It used to be working fine before. Then few days ago, the buffer level goes up and down while burning with Nero. I have defrag my hard drive. Check the hard drive is in DMA mode. And uninstall all of the USB driver and reinstall with the latest ones (built-in from Window 2000 SP4). It is still the same. It takes 1.5 hrs to burn a DVD now. Sometimes it will failed with Ritek DVD-R. Below is the log. Pls help!

"The semaphore timeout period has expired." error is the same as the SCSI error given by Nero, or at least is related to the same problem: using dvd burner on USB. There is a thread similar to this one on dvddecrypters forum.

Dvddecrypters current version retries sending the command, but after 20 timeouts it gives up, resulting in a failed burn.

I have asked craig about the errors I have met so far. Since there are so many experts here, I would like to ask what could be wrong for my case:

My Laptop is IBM t-42. 512M 1.7G
My external DVD writer is: MadDog Megastor USB 2.0 7 in 1 16X
My DVD-R are: GQ 8X and Verbatim 8X

I got the SCSI error and burn process failed from both Nero (latest update version) and DVD Decrypter (When I use it to write the ISO image to DVD-R)

I have already updated the latest firmware (flash) from maddog website for this external writer to 1.f3.

I have listed the log files for this problem at:
http://www.utdallas.edu/~xind/NeroHistory.log
http://www.utdallas.edu/~xind/Log.txt
http://www.utdallas.edu/~xind/Log2.txt
http://www.utdallas.edu/~xind/Log3.txt

Please help me with this issue. Thank you so much.

Ok, I decided to bite the bullet after reading here. I bought myself a Benq 162I External Writer. The burner worked flawlessly everytime on Fuji and TDK discs. There must be something different in the non OEM enclosures that cause these problems.

No it isn't, becouse i've got a retail external burner (BTC drw1108UI) and i've got the same problems. But it's strange becouse it somtimes looks like hit and miss with burners and media. But i didn't hear a real solution yet. It's also pretty strange that my burner can burn dvd+r without problems but cannot burn dvd-r (okay, on usb1.1 but that takes ages)

Hey guys and gals,
I'm back with some final words. I broke down and bought a new External Enclosure MacAlly USB2/IEEE. Didn't change any software, hardware (burner), or cable. Still using USB2 and same port on the back. Everything is a go with Ritek DVD-R 8X.
I think the main issue here is probably firmware on the enclosure case. Byttec sucks. It's about 50 bucks, but it works and saves me time instead of messing with the other one. So that's my 2 cents and if anyone of you guys were to purchase one and got it running like I did. That would confirm a whole lot. Good luck with everyone else.

I never heard of BTC, BTC drw1108UI. I definitely don't think it's brand name like Benq, Plextor, Hitachi, or Pioneer.

If you want to be certain, I suggest going to Best Buy or Circuit City and buy a REAL brand name external burner to test out and then return it. One way or another, you'll know if it's your system, media, or the enclosure that's the problem.

Good luck.

yeah it is a brand name, take a look at www.btc.com.tw
some companys (also big ones) use BTC readers/writers and rebrand them to their own name.
it's a retail external burner.

Hi everyone,
Ok, I posted here some time ago about this problem, and suspected that the fault lay with the USB2 connection, at the time I was unable to change the enclosure for one with a firewire, however I have just done that and performed many burns trouble free.
The fault is not the burner, the leads, the software, it could well be in some peoples case "user" error, but changing to a firewire enabled enclosure worked, the enclosure was cheaper than the original from ukdvdr..they said it would work and it did, got same laptop...and same external burner pioneer 107...now working great, as for the old enclosure, I put a harddrive in it, and connected it to my tower, through the usb and it works fine like that, but with a dvd burner in error messages...so for those who can afford to buy a new enclosure, trying the £23.99 one from ukdvdr with firewire, thats if your laptop has a firewire port...just be aware that the lead that comes with the enclosure, is 6 to 6, and the lead we needed for our laptop was 6 to 4, so we shopped locally and bought a firewire lead, it is dependant on your laptop firwire port.
Thanks to everyone on here who has tried allsorts of suggestions, but the firewire option is definately the correct way to resolve this.

nice to see that it works on firewire, did read several posts about that. unluky are the desktop users, wich in most cases don't have a firewire connection, but only usb.

Indeed, firewire has always worked. But firewire is slower than USB2. That said, most laptop users don't have the luxury of having a firewire connection. True, we can buy one that fits into our PCMCIA slot. Dunno if there will be any problems.

I still say go and buy the Benq 162I external burner if you don't have a burner yet. Something about this unit's architecture allows me to burn DVD's at 8x.

If you guys read my last post, you don't have to rely on firewire even though we know it works. I'm still using USB2 for the same burner, just a different external enclosure. By the way, even though firewire is slower than USB2 by approximately 80 Mbs, it is more consistent with data transfer so it's better to use it on external HD. As for burning DVDs, it doesn't really matter since both connections can handle up to 50 MBs. Just purchase another enclosure with both USB2/Firewire, then you can choose which options to connect. Not only that, I'm sure some of you will eventually purchase a new computer (laptop) that has a firewire port in it.

With external enclosures, it's a crap shoot. Most PC stores only sell one or two kinds and when you buy them, if it doesn't work, your usually SOL as they will tell you it works on their machines. Of course, there is always mail order or online if you want to buy one. But, that's not always practical if you live outside the USA. BTW, I am in Canada and finding a working external 5.25 enclosure is next to impossible.

FWIW, my 6 month old Dell Inspiron 1150 Laptop does not have firewire. Generally, desktop replacement units and higher-end laptops have firewire connections. I have been tempted at times to buy a PCMCIA firewire card from EBAY but I haven't.

Has anyone run an external HD and a DVD at the same time via USB?

I have 2 Belkin USB2.0 enclosures. One has my dvd-rom/CD Burner combo drive. I do all my CD Burning on this, also all dvd ripping (my dvd burner is internal). The other enclosure has a spare HDD, in it and the 2 enclosures don't co-exist (at the same time i mean). This is most likely as the jumpers for my enclosures have to be set to Master only (i assume all enclosures are like this but don't ever need them on at same time anyway). Even expecting either of them to fire up without disabling/enabling them first is a crap shoot. No big deal with that, at least now i've gone XP and the disable/enable doesn't expect a reboot like my Win2000 did (every blessed time!).
Bloody USB gadgets, the only USB things that work (almost) 100% correctly are my USB sticks!. Well except one that blue screens my home PC so i don't use that one anymore.

Setting DMA on my enclosures is impossible, and from what i have read you don't need to set DMA on external enclosures anyway.

The only thing i'm wary of is that i'd like to buy a 2nd dvd burner sometime and house within one of the enclosures. If the 2 enclosures still don't co-exist it may be a waste of money. Hang on i've just thought, i do have firewire on my PC, ah but the enclosures are USB only and don't want to buy any more enclosures. hmmmmm!

Sorry i've probably raised more questions than answers!
