Idea for splitting main movie using DVD Shrink

I noticed a lot of posts regarding splitting unuaually large movies using various programs. I'm kind of new to this stuff, but I made an observation a few minutes ago which I'd like to get some input on.
I haven't tried it yet, but I always use DVD decrypter followed by DVD shrink. I have used VOB blanker once or twice.
Many people like to keep the original menu system in place when making backups of their originals and I think I've figured out a way to do it by using the 3 programs I mentioned.
Here's my idea: Instead of killing the menu system by Re-authoring in Shrink, why not use VOB blanker prior to using Shrink? As I said, I haven't tried it yet, but it looks like it can be done. By selecting the main movie VOB, you can right click at the bottom of the screen and select "cell list". This brings up all the cells of the main VOB file. By blanking out half of them, you can reduce the size of the main VOB file by as much as you want. Then you could keep track of which cells you blanked, then re-run VOB blanker, blank out the cells you previously left intact, and leave the ones you blanked out before intact.
This all seems like it would be very time consuming. You would also have to run Shrink twice, but in the end, you could potentially leave all menus and extras intact and have two perfect halves of the movie on two disks with zero to minimal compression!!
I think I've confused myself with all this. I'm sure there's an easier way to do all this, but I don't know how.
Also, all the programs to do this are FREE!

Try it out and write a guide. I haven't used VOB Blanker, but if what you are theorizing here works, it'll probably benefit a lot of people.

I may do that. I'm not sure how to do screenshots though. A text guide would be pretty easy. The process would be easy to do, but time consuming. It would probably take a few hours to do a complete backup, but the quality would be awesome! But then, you'd have to switch disks in the middle of the movie. That could be a pain in the rear! But then again, if you find an original with a huge movie file, it would be very beneficial.

Just to add to my idea, thinking about encoding time, this may not take up as much time as I initially thought. The more compression you use, the longer the encoding time is. If you cut the movie in half, you may not have to have ANY compression. Therefore, DVD Shrink would only take about 10 minutes to encode versus the usual 45 min to an hour for highly compressed movies. You might even be able to burn it directly with Nero or other similar program.

Alright, I didn't burn the disks, but I did split the file. I'm sure it will work!
Here's an excellent example:
One of my originals is a very long movie. Using Shrink, I looked at taking off all audio except English 5.1 and I left the English subtitles intact. I left the menu titles at automatic compression and exchanged the extras for a still image. The compression level was 66.5%. Not too bad, but if you want excellent video quality, not all that great.
I then ran DVD Decrypter and opened the complete ISO file with VOB blanker. I blanked the second half of the main movie and saved this as a new separate ISO file. I then ran VOB blanker again and blanked the first half of the main movie and saved this as another separate ISO file.
Going back to DVD Shrink and keeping the same settings as before(still image for extras and same audio and subtitles selected), I noticed that the menus and main movie titles were at 100% (or no compression whatsoever). If I allowed the extras to be included, all titles were in the 94-99% range! Excellent!!!
I think this method can serve as a viable option for those searching for an answer to the compression problem when dealing with long titles. Sure, you'll have to switch disks halfway through the movie, but you won't sacrifice video quality for convenience.

I can find only one fault in your conclusion.. I dont mean to rain on your parade and correct me if I am wrong, but when doing it the way you have suggested are you able to keep full function of the Menu's. Meaning if I select Extras and want to watch a video or something will it tell me to go to disk 2 if is on that disk. I guess what I'm saying is I dont believe the structure would be right for the menus to work properly. I could be wrong though, and am very curious if this works please let us know...
If all you are trying to do is make a 1:1 back up with no compression or a very large movie I have guide for that at my website (in my sig) called "How to make 1:1 copy of DVD Using Shrink (no compression)" Of course with that method you have no extras which is why I am curious about the way you have explained?

I like your method also, but you don't have any menus with that method. With the method I described, you have fully functional (original) menus.....just like the original disks. You can even leave the special features on both disks if you want.
The menus won't tell you to switch to disk #2 to watch a special feature though. You would have to have some type of menu building software for that. But if you want to leave off the special features, when you select "special features" from the finished product, you won't get any video. The menu will still work, but you just won't see anything.
The original menu structure is intact. That's the whole purpose of VOB blanker. I just learned about this neat little program and it is now one of my favorite tools!
I like my method because with the original menus, you can select your audio with the menu and can leave the special features on either disk or both if desired.
Try it out. You might find that you like this method. If you need additional, I'll be glad to post it on this thread.
Let me know if this works for you.

Well, I see that I wasn't the first one to come up with this idea. But I had never looked at the jsoto guides page when I posted this thread. The idea just popped into my head all of a sudden. I thought that for once, I had an original idea.
My idea is slightly different than what's on the VOB blanker guide page though, because I leave the original menus intact and can leave the special features on either one or both disks.
I like things to be as close to the original as possible. For some odd reason, I like to have all the special features, and intro screens, etc. on my backups.

I have used several different programs to backup DVD's. About a year ago started out with DvdXcopy. I had varying degrees of success with it. Then I discovered DVD Decryptor/DVD Shrink. I used it for several months but found problems with it also. For one, if want to split a long movie onto 2 DVD's using Re-author you lose the menu's. If you want to copy a TV series DVD you will get questionable quality due to the amouth of data to be coppied. Many publishers put ove 3 hours of material on each dvd. The same goes for DVD Decryptor/Nero 6. Then I tried DVD Decryptor/TMPGEnc DVD Author for TV series DVD's. It works great but it is labor intensive. Then I discovered CloneDVD 2/AnyDVD. This is a very elegant piece of software. You can easily copy any DVD and get great quality. I have compared the results with DVD Shrink and I cannot see any difference on my 50" Hitachi HDTV. You can also easily do the following:
1. Copy any DVD
2. Split any DVD onto 2 DVD's and keep the menu on disc 1 and have the movie immediately resume when you insert disc 2. You can also retain all the special
features.
3. Copy a multi-episode(TV series) DVD onto 2 DVD AND retain the menu's on both DVD's.
ClondDVD 2 is VERY fast! At least twice as fast as anything else I've tried! I have friends and relatives who have gone the DVD Decryptor/DVD Shrink route and have ALL switched to Clone DVD 2.
One thing I always do when burning the DVD is to set the burn speed one click lower than the DVD's rated speed. In other words if the blank DVD is rated at 8X, I burn it at 6X. For 4X I use 2-2.4X. This way I ensure that my DVD will
play in any of my three DVD players. I have Sony, JVC and Philips. They also play in my Xbox.
The choice is yours. If you're looking for ease, simplicity and great quality CloneDVD 2 is the way to go.

For VOB blanker, you'll need either an ISO file you created of your home movies, etc., or the ISO file generated when you run DVD Decrypter.
Open the file with VOB blanker. Left click on the main movie file at the top half of the VOB blanker program screen under "Title Set" to highlight it. It will most likely be the largest one. Take note of the final size of the title set.
At the bottom half of the program screen under "PGC's in selected title set", you will see your selected PGC's in the main movie title set. There will most likely be only one. Right click it and select "cell list".
In the resulting window, you'll see your cell numbers under the "#" column, followed by their respective program#'s, chapter #'s, sizes, and durations. Starting at the bottom and working your way to the top of the list, right click and select "blank" for each cell number until you have blanked out about half of the main title set. You can also click on the bottom cell number, hold down "CTRL", then click about halfway up the list to select as many as you want.
You can do two things here: You can select what you think is half, then click "apply". Under the main program window, the file size of your selected title set will be updated. If it's half as large as initially, you're good. If not, simply reselect "cell list" at the bottom and blank out some more. If you don't like trial and error, you can keep track of the sizes of the cells you blanked on a calculator until you've blanked out half of them. Be sure to click "apply". Your selected title set size will be updated. Be sure to write down the last cell number you blanked out. You'll need to know this for the next disk you create.
At the main program screen, make a new temporary output folder. Call it "first half of _______" if you want. Then click the "process" button at the bottom of VOB blanker. This will create the ISO image for your first disk.
When VOB blanker is finished, right click on the PGC at the bottom half of the program window and select "keep". This allows the program to keep all of the cell numbers you just blanked out.
Now, right click the PGC at the bottom half of the program window and again select "cell list". Repeat the above process and blank the cells starting at the top and working your way down the list until you've blanked out all the cell numbers you previously left intact. That's why you needed to write down the last number you blanked previously. You need to blank the ones you previously kept and keep the ones you previously blanked.
Now, create another temporary output folder, call it "second half of _____" if you want. Now, click the "process" button. This creates your second disk.
You're done with VOB blanker.
Now, open DVD Shrink. This is the easy part. Click "open files" and open the first temporary folder you created. When finished analyzing, check the compression level of the main movie. It should be close to or at 100%. You're golden. If you definitely want the main movie to be at 100%, slightly compress or get rid of the special features using "still image" until your main movie compression is at 100%. Note: You could also have used VOB blanker to blank out the cells containing your special features. By doing that, you don't have to look at the grayed out screen with the big "S" shrink logo on it. I'm sure there's a guide for doing that, but you can use the same process as before in VOB blanker. Just be sure to use "preview and cut" in VOB blanker to see what you're blanking out.
Now, you can "Backup" and burn your disk. Repeat the whole process with the second temporary file you had created before for the second disk.
Enjoy your non-compressed video for years to come....unless you use crappy media. In which case, you can enjoy your non-compressed video for hours or minutes.

DVDFab will split full disk content or movie only, and give you menus on each disk if you wish. This is a standard "wizard-type" feature of the s/w, no messing about involved.

@sadsac,
I see what you mean - I gave it a try and while it seems confusing the first time, it's a lot easier the second time around when you know where things are going. The only "hitch" is clicking off each cell in order to blank it out -
Nice call - split in 2 for free and simple too.

It's pretty obvious that you've never tried AnyDVD, InterVideo's CopyDVD 3 with CopyToDVD. Then we're talking fast. When you rate proggys, it's nice to try a few :)
Once you try those, you'll change your mind.

No worries here BB - I used a DVDD pre-ripped "Ray" that was on my HD. It was ripped in the "file" MODE in a VOB format. I then picked it up with VOB Blanker, ran it through DVD Shrink (though the size wasn't an issue) and burned it to disc with DVDD (Though in real life I'd rather use CopyToDVD because of it's speed AND the option of burning it to any of 3 drives - I've been going a bit crazy recently - I'll PM you with the details as they aren't for public consumption -
I fail to see what you're fighting with SS about - I also think it's in the threads best interest to post these 2 posts there -

If it looks like I am fighting then I am sorry.. as this was not my intent I would like to be able to do this and have all the menus function I believe it is great if it works and I applaud SS... It is great news. I just tried it last night though and I didn't have the menus functioning properly so I must have missed something... I'm messin with it right now and will let ya know.. Just to clarify what I'm doing. I'm not working with a pristine (complete) DVD. I am working with the "movie only" which, as I stated, was ripped to my HD using DVDD in the file mode.
I don't know if not having the extras is an issue or not -
