The point remains, that you can't grab your GT4 PS2 disc chuck it into your PC back it upa and play the bastard, just like you can with your copy of GT3. Sure from what I read some with "a certain mod chip" report that they can play a backed up copy. But I'm slightly scepticle. Until the DL-R burner and disc become available, this appears that it won't work mainstream.

maybe so...but it can be backed up,we just need to find the dvd checks,thats the only thing from stopping a full working back up on a standard dvd5 +/- disc...if we could find these checks,naturally we wouldn't have to use a dl disc(unless the DVD checks are small enough,but the rest of the data is say 6 Gb's,then a dl is required

yeah you are right i am too touchy. a dms4 with toxic bios will play from a hdd on a network adapter. i would rather use usb extreme because mod chips are a pain to put in but that will not work with gt4. i used the solderless dsm4 ezi. but that will not work on version 12 ps2. gt4 is wearing my ps2 out. did anyone know it the car drives itself in b spec mode? that is how i am doing the endurance races.

Holy snikies I think I found a cause for GT4,not really sure though.Check out the system.cnf file in winhex or hexworkshop either one will work.Do you notice anything very strange about this,because I do.Look this is what it displays right:
BOOT2 = cdrom0:\SCUS_973.28;1..VER = 1.01..VMODE = NTSC..
Now this is very odd to be honest,after looking at it very closely this doesn't seem right at all.I went and looked at it with IsoBuster extracted the missing UDF files,and there another system.cnf file.When I looked at it with sector view it displayed the code and the paths of the other file types such as CORE.GT4 and GT4.VOL .I wish I would have saved it,but I didn't think about it at the time.Guess what it is the system.cnf file that is off,which is making the game not boot at all.

Important info for matrix infinity users regarding v1.4 firmware:
I emailed the matrix team about gt4 and weather they are upgrading their firmware for gt4 or not
I got the following reply:
"we are completing the new security code to avoid that other tam can use
our firmware into their products.
As soon as this is completed we will release the v1.4 firmware and the
DVD-DL support patch for the infinity."
I guess this means us matrix infinity users will be able to back the game up on duallayer-r disc?? correct me if i'm wrong
thanks

L-Burna; when I open the system.cnf file off a backup (non working)with PS2dis it says -
BOOT2 = cdrom0:\SCES 517.19:1 VSCES_517.19;1 VER=1.00 VMODE=PAL
it also appears to contain jumps to addresses that dont exist in the system.cnf file itself, but I am still looking for a full set of opcodes for the PS2's processor to confirm this.

both layers of gt4 have a toc file that only the ps2 can read. they are what everyone calls bad sectors that burners cannot read or copy. all swap magic is is a bunch of toc files that work with most games so that allows backups to boot. i also hear that a mod chip cannot be switched from one ps2 to another which would defeat the purpose of buying one that works with the most versions of the ps 2. does anyone know if this it true? that did come directly from dms.

The CORE.GT4 file inside of GT4 is the TOC file,and yes your right it is encrypted.I went and looked at the God of War game,and it also has a TOC file.When you look inside of it with notepad or word it will reveal all the files inside of the .PAK files.I am assuming the CORE.GT4 would be the extracting file for both of the .VOL files.Only problem is that it doesn't display any information when you view it with word or notepad.I am thinking the CORE.GT4 isn't really extracted.

Actually I think the CORE.GT4 is in a different language to be honest,maybe Japanese or something like that.I think this is what is making it difficult to make out what it says.

I think the whole point of gt4 is to wear out your ps2 so you will buy the ps3 when it comes out. i have it playing itself in a 9 hour race. cant wait to do the 24 hour race. whats the point of having a game that plays itself? i am more interested in backing it up just to see what they did to make it so difficult.

@Tom
the point of B-spec is not to just let the car drive by itself, You're supposed to be the manager and give commands to the CPU driver. They wanted to add "a new way to experience the game". Personally i find it kind of pointless cause really it's all about driving for me. Although i can see why you'd want to use it for the LOOONG endurance races. they do get a bit boring after awhile.

That should answer most of yer questions and at least give you something to use as a base to work on. I would HIHGHLY recommend downloading DVD Decrypter and Alcohol 120% Nothing works better than these as far as I'm concerned. Just be sure to use good discs. Most anything will work at first but crap discs will stop working after awhile. Personally i still use cheap walmart ILO discs but that probably isn't a good idea if you want your disc to work 6 months from now.

didn't know that a guide didn't exist. I made it work, I will write up a guide and post it tomorrow.. the actual data (minus iso gabs) on this dvd is only 4.9gb...it really doesn't take much downsampling to get it to go. I played through for 6 hours plus and haven't ran into a problem yet. Really surprised me that I am the only one here that got it to work..that is odd.

the simple answer to your question BASSYn is that some they do not want copied and others they just dont care. they are a monopoly and can decide exactly how much they want to make. in europe the game is nearly double what it is here. why would that be do you think? more piracy there maybe? who can blame anyone with how much energy and food and everything else is going up. the oil companies are investing in their infastructure like they think it is a waste of money. they must know something we dont. always follow the money because that is where the answers are. i`ll try to stay on topic better, i really will. does anyone know if usb extreme will play gt4?

Bassy_500 that Toxic update won't work for HDD users,because it is only the ToxicOSv0.2 version.They should be working on the ToxicOSv0.3 from what I am hearing.Once that they get that sorted out for the HDD GT4 will be available for everyone.At the momment no the ToxicOSv0.2 will not boot GT4,but should improve some game compatibility.Another thing almasy82 stop spreading lies on here,because alot of people look on these threads.If they actually go by a method by you,they will end up with tons of coasters.Roxio will not fix the image,it has to be patched to get rid of the Dvd checks.Then it has to be extracted from the CORE.GT4 file,and edited then rebuilt.
