In the post above mine, he states that he cannot get DMA to go on. I was referring to Illin07s' post. You were referring to your own!

Perhaps I was at crossed purposes.

I don't really care for pedants! I was just trying to help with the DMA prob.
Is your DMA on in your BIOS Illin07?

i went into my BIOS and the LTP port DMA was default set to off. there were 2 other options DMA 1 or DMA 3. i set it to DMA 1 and it still wouldnt switch to DMA under properties. i'm going to try DMA 3 now and will notify if it works or not. if not, any other suggestions?

In my BIOS the DMA is in the integrated peripherals section. BIOSs are different. Have a play about & let us know how you get on.

CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives can revert to using PIO mode, despite being set to use "DMA if Available." Here's how to make Windows XP redetect the DMA capabilities of the drives.

This behaviour occurs with the following conditions:

-Windows XP is the operating system (should be same for 2K)
-A CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, which is known to support DMA mode now works only in PIO mode.
-The drive controller is set to use "DMA if available" but reports to be only in PIO mode.

Following is the mechanism that has worked for me, please try it at your own risk, it involves hacking the registry:

1. Open RegEdit
2. Find the following KEY:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\000x
3. The last four digits will be 0000, 0001, 0002, 0003, and so on.
4. Under each key, delete all occurences of the following values:
MasterIdDataChecksum
SlaveIdDataChecksum
5. Reboot the computer. Windows will now redetect DMA settings.

Thanks for that BB, I've not had many probs with DMA, so my knowledge is rather limited. I'm glad that you took the time out to help, cheers mate!

idk what is going on with my computer, but i just realized that when i go into device manager under the IDE "tab" i dont have Primary and Secondary IDE Channel, i have 2 that say Primary. under advance tab of the first one it says device 0 is ultra DMA mode 5 and device 1 is DMA not applicable. then, the second primary advance tab says that device 0 is Ultra DMA mode 2 and device 1 is default PIO. where did i go wrong and mess this up? and how do i fix it? i feel so stupid because i never had this many problems with my old computer. thanks again, i'd be in the dark if it weren't for great people like you.

Just delete them all and reboot. Windows should detect and install them properly for you..

- hmmm, you've mistakenly put in a dvd-rom disc, or maybe a written-to dvd.

The last 2 burns seemed to have worked ok -

no it wasent a used dvd or a dvd-rom just DVD-R i looked on the web site u posted but didnt know what i was looking for. i am using just a Verbatim DVD-R datalife 1x-4x 4.7GB 120 min, not a datalife plus. Its just a 50 pack i got at Sams Club. But, ive started to notice a pattern with this dvd burning ill boot up my comp try to burn the disc and it gives me the error i talked about in my first post. Then i put in a backed up DVD-R verbatim disc of any movie watch it for a few seconds then stop the movie. Ill take the disc out of my drive put in a blank DVD-R and it starts up Nero. like presto im thinkin its my drives havin troble reading the DVD-R discs or something
