I've been using emule for a little while now, i'm not leeching (sharing about 4gs worth of stuff), but i'm still getting low download speeds. I've got a fast DSL connection, a high ID and i turn my firewall off to use emule. But I can't keep my computer turned on 24/7, anybody got some advice? thanks in advance.

There is no way to increase your download speeds if you cannot keep eMule on 24/7.
This is a must, after having used it throughout the whole of this year. The more you give, the higher the credit you'll receive, so that when you do actually start to download something for yourself you'll be given priority. You will find that when this occurs, your time to wait will decrease, and if there are lots of other sources who have the file that you want then your download speed should simultaneously increase since there are more sources to extract from. To obtain this however you MUST leave eMule on 24/7. All this is subject to the fact that you know what particular settings work best for your connection speeds. As an example, I leave my machine on about 6 days a time, then give it a rest on the 7th day together with a bit of pc maintenance. If I was to keep disconnecting from eMule on a daily basis, then I find that I go back in the queuing system that eMule uses and have to wait several hours before downloads start to happen.
You've got to keep connected in order to keep the momentum going so that you consistently can keep ahead in the queueing system.

Hi, thanks for this, its pretty helpful, and I've tried alot of the things mentioned.

Still, I'm getting mostly crappy speeds. :(

I've got a router but I've configured it ( i can send over irc now aswell, and I have a HighID on emule). I'm sharing mostly music videos (m2v + vob) concerts, friends episodes and some archives. Some files I'm sharing are pretty rare. People are uploading from me quite a lot, and I've just removed the upload limit. When a download transfers over 20MB, i release the file, and change it back when done. Everybody can see my share. I have 512k modem, using Windows Xp with firewall disabled. I never have kazaa open while running it, I have IRC open occasionally. Never download from that when I'm using emule. I get the occasional 10-19lb/sec for a bit then it goes back to about 1,2,3,4,etc. I still don't know what I'm doing wrong really. I can't keep my computer on 24/7, it's on for about 12 hours max each day. I've been using for a week.

Any advice?

Oh and ps: im connected to Razorback all the time.

Is anyone out there running, or has run, emule on a Win2k Server? if so what were your results because ever since I swapped my emule from an XP box to my server box it is slooooooow (average download at 5.4nd thats all files concurrently) on the downloads, but the upload speeds are fine (average of 10.xx). Of course I ask this here since Dela probably knows a way to make it work again ;) Both boxes are 2.4Ghz and 768 MB Ram. No large fragmentation on either and lots and lots of free space. My connection is a DSL connect. Also, I have changed the server from optimized for "background services" to optimized for "applications" and still no change. Oh, I used to average about 30 on my XP box. TIA for any help or suggestions.

Hi Dela (et al)
I've just got myself onto DSL and have downloaded emule.
It looks a lot more complicated to set up compared to Kazaa as stated in your tutorial - well not so much the setting up, just the functionality of it!
I've followed Dela's excellent tutorial to the letter, I'm sharing ALL my amassed programs I've collected over the years (some biggies in there)
However, I can't get it to run right (or rather, to my liking!)
I've made all my progs available and currently have 7 0r 8 people uploading off me ..... I was just about to say that I've been at the "waiting" stage for over 2 hours and not a sign of anyone letting me get anything off 'em, but when I looked, it had just started to download ...... it's gone off again now and back to waiting grrr!
I'm on a 1meg DSL connection and it's like being on a 56k - worse in fact!
Are my settings screwed up by the looks of things, or is this normal for new users?
If so, I can't see how anyone has the patience to hang around ... what's the point of having a DSL connection when you can get it posted quicker!! (If you see my point!)
TIA

Jeesh - Sorry folks, I musta been in too much of a rush to notice the number of posts on this thread ... and how long it's been going - I got to the bottom of the first page and thought that was it!!
After reading that you have to leave your puter on 24/7, I can see I've got a loooong way to go!!

It is slow at first, but worth it in the long run. If you want to increase your credit with other users, you must download extremely popular files in the vein of those that you normally download, and keep them shared as much as possible. That way, when you want just such a file, some of the same users you uploaded to are indebted to you and will bump you to the front of the line to download from them. Once the ball gets rolling, definitely follow all the tips in this forum concerning toggling the file priority to release.

Do you have to disable your firewall? Isn't this dangerous?

Nope. You do have to configure it to allow eMule to run on the port you use, though.

That just means allowing the program to communicate unimpeded by the firewall(when prompted after first starting the program) - am I right?

I cant answer your problem specifically lancelot BUT...
Having read this thread everyone is moaning aout download speeds relative to upload. I am an e mule newbie (two weeks now) and I had the same thing untill a couple of days ago. My Ul:DL ratio was about 3.5:1 which sucks however; on monday it all started to pay off.
My download rate is now amazing I got 2 gig over last night!! You have to put up with a couple of weeks of sharing files similar to the ones you will be downloading before things pick up and you MUST MUST MUST leave e mule running for days at a time in order to make it worth while.
Provided you can follow all the setup and wait out the first few weeks the program is 1000 times better than kazaa for downloading everything other than single mp3 files (and viruses).

Stick with it peeps...

Yeah, but thats no job4 a firewall.. ;)

Dont like the appz that say they do everything cuz its better to be bugfree and really be good at one thing than have a lot of bugs and pretend to do everything..(Microsoft).. ;)

But MS is really evil cuz theyre releasing so called "updates" which if yer stupid enough to use it yer trapped...

I see so many w/ issues about firewalls, and lots of recommendations. I didn't see one for the firewall I prefer to use, neowatch2.4 the V b4 Mcarsfee took over that production co. total user controlled configured, dosn't use hardly as many rescources as the hundreds of others I've had a go with, and it dosn't even bother the upload end. put that together with GFI3.3 and an unmatchable pair as far as i have seen as of yet.

Hi to all, I am new to this forum because I've been looking for a solution for my problem which is my LowID, well, ive been reading all this posts and ive seen many times my problem but unfortunately I am kinda newb on this of file sharing and also my english its not quite good so... Most of answers to this LowID problem have to do something with firewalls, well my pc is connected to other Pc which I think is called host ( dunno the name of this network on english sry... ) since I use emule on an office, I say this coz a friend told me that coz this kind of "network" (pc's connected so each other) had a firewall or something like that, I know that the pc where all pc's are connected has a firewall, but even when that pc is not switched on I still get the "you have a low id " message.

thx in advance sry coz I know that this post would be hard to understand coz of my english and my low knowedge about computers, sry :/

This eMule program really sucks. I thought it must have been setup wrong, i spent the last few weeks reading all the stuff i can find on the subject, like this Tutorial, and i have tweaked until i was ready to hurl.

I have had eMule running 24/7 for months, and it took almost a week just to get one download done that i wanted. You guys call this the best file sharing app? Bullshit, Bullshit, excuse me.

I am sharing to the world at speeds around 30-40kbs, but my downloads barely ever break the .9-1.5kbs barrier, its like being on dialup all over again. I have shared files that show requests in the hundreds, some of the top requested files should hit 1,000 by the end of this weekend. I would uninstall eMule but i still have one download going, its been going 24/7 for nearly 6 days, and its only a 452MB file.

My downloads arent being choked by allowing to much upload bandwidth, and if there was a superstar file sharer listing i would be on it. I have nearly 200gb worth of popular files on hand, all shared from my home file server, through the 1000mb lan (yep the new 1000 stuff is cool) to the machine i am on, and then shared in eMule which sees the files as local.

It just sad to see the totals, in statistics it shows that i have uploaded 132GB!! And my downloaded only shows 1,234MB, that sucks ass, i upload 132GB and only get back 1.2GB?? The file i am trying to download right now has 628 sources for it, but its barely going at 1kbs most of the time. It's actually worse than dialup, i remember using dialup with eDonkey would give me at least 3-4kbs on a file that has less sources than this one.

And i have a big fat pipe coming in here, 3000/1024, so you can see why my uploading is going like a ferrari for others, but my downloads are like a retiree on a three wheeled bicycle.

I give up, going back to OverNet 0.52, it may not always list as much in a search that eMule will, but my downloads on there run a consistent 130-175kbs.

And yes i have a high ID! I know all about this game from running eDonkey, which i did try the other night for the hell of it, and it beat eMule hands down with at least 80-110kbs downloads.

eMule is crippled, time to send it to the glue factory.
