@jmox -

edit- LOCOENG pipped me to the post :)
i had made the same recommendation for the firmware to install, initially. however i found a post stating that BGS4 was OEM firmware. As LOCOENG and me have given different firmware info, can you confirm if the burner is a proper Lite-on driver or did you get the burner thrown in with the PC (if so what make is the PC, helps us pinpoint the firmware needed).

I just switched to 16X discs
- see further down my comments, your firmware is recognising the discs fine
Thanks.

Nero API version: 6.3.1.17
- even though it looks like Nero isn't causing you problems, your version's quite old, update to the latest decent 6.x version from eithere of these links -
http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/Nero-6.6.0.18.exe
http://httpdl2.usw.nero.com/Nero-6.6.0.18.exe (don't install 6.6.1.4 as that's causing a lot of grief for a lot of ppl).
Quote:
Recorder: <LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-1633S>Version: BGS4
- i've just been reading that this is an OEM version of the Lite-on drive which means you can't use normal lite-on firmware. BGS4 seems to be up to date anyway
Quote:
Physical memory : 382MB (391664kB)
Free physical memory: 82MB (84308kB)
Memory in use : 78 %
- you have virtually no free memory left, and only 384MB to start with. you need to close down more programs prior to ALL dvd work/burning to ensure more free memory
Quote:
Recorder: LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-1633S, Media type: DVD-R
Disc Manufacturer: MCC 03 - RG20
Disc Application Code: 64, Disc Physical Code: 193
- very nice discs and the fact that there's 3 lines listed here with media info (MCC = Mitsubishi Chemical Company) your firmware's up to date enough to recognise the discs

This error means that your burner doesn't like your discs, are those Fuji's made in Japan or Taiwan? I think they are MIT, the Japanese branded Fuji's should code out as RICOHJPN...much better media.

Try another brand disc...Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden, Sony, Maxell (made in Japan). The Nero update probably isn't necessary.

Thanks! I tried a Fuji disc from Japan and it burned fine. The original discs I was using were Imation. I also updated Nero and it seems to be working. Is there any way to be able to use the imation discs?

I wouldn't use Imation, they are basically crap...right up there with Memorex.

Verbatims are some of the best...do you live in the states?

Thanks for the help. I updated the Nero edition, but haven't updated firmware, because I couldn't- for the reaon in Creaky's post. I tried again and failed, got another error.

As for my drive- it came with the machine, an emachine. Let me know what more info I can provide.

Would more memory do it, or should I just ditch these disks and get some of the slower speed ones?

Thanks for all the help.

you still need to resolve this bit; your ATAPI drivers are supposed to be listed in this section, fix by following this - http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/FAQ.htm
Quote:
As for my drive- it came with the machine, an emachine.
- that's answered it, your drive is indeed an 'OEM' drive, in which case the firmware is fine
Quote:
Would more memory do it, or should I just ditch these disks and get some of the slower speed ones?
- more memory would be good, but as long as you close enough stuff down prior to burning you should get by for now. as i say the discs appear to be recognised fine by the firmware, you just need to get the ATAPI drivers sorted...

Creaky- what exactly on that site will get my ATAPI drives listed there? I don't see it.

Thanks again.

@jmox -

there's supposed to be a pdf guide on that site that explains fixing DMA & removing/reinstating IDE controllers... try this, it's the same difference... (just be very careful with regedit) -
Quote:
Run REGEDIT. Go to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

It has subkeys like 0000, 0001, 0002, etc. Normally 0001 is the primary IDE channel, 0002 the secondary, but other numbers can occur under certain circumstances. You have to go through these subkeys and check the DriverDesc value until you find the proper IDE channel.

Delete MasterIdDataChecksum or SlaveIdDataChecksum, depending on whether the device in question is attached as master or slave, but it can't actually hurt to delete both. Reboot. The drive DMA capabilities will be redetected.

2006-01-19 ? Horst Schülke wrote that it is sufficient to empty the content of these values. But you can also delete the values entirely. Windows will automatically recreate them anyway, with new content.

Open Device Manager again and check whether the device is now actually using DMA mode. If so, congratulations, you've made it (at least until the next time Windows disables DMA).

<11> What is ASPI and do I need it?
The term 'ASPI' is an acronym that stands for: Advanced SCSI Programming Interface. All the following terms are synonymous: ASPI layer, ASPI drivers, ASPI interface. The term 'SCSI' [scuzzy] is an acronym that stands for Small Computer Systems Interface. An ASPI layer consists of four files that 'lie between' various programs [software] and certain devices, such as CD/DVD-ROM drives and CD/DVD burners/writers [hardware]. Software programs such as CD digital audio extractors [commonly known as 'Rippers'] and CD-writing utilities such as CDRWin use/require ASPI drivers to 'communicate with' SCSI devices. Many people don't realize however, that the files contained in an ASPI layer are also used in systems that *don't* contain a SCSI adapter, or SCSI devices .. for things such as ripping CD audio and burning CD/DVDs.

Hey guys I'm back!

Ok, so since last monday I have purchased a new NEC drive, a 3550 or something, here this one - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827152055 - and it burns disks now. Now there is a new problem though... I played the movie i just made and it doesn't play smoothly. Gets pixely at times, jumps a bit at times... Still using verbatim 16x disks, burned at 4x, and my dvd player is semi-new and lists that it should play dvd-r's and all the rest. I've never had a problem with burned disks in it before with my old burner and memorex media. Any ideas why??? I'm not exactly happy at the moment seeming as I just spent money to get this to work again and now I'm still left with coasters.

Refresh our memory a bit Dave, are you using DVD Shrink or Recode for compression? Try using the advanced controls to smooth out the pixellation and don't do anything during the burn.

I am using DVD Shrink. I already leave it completely alone while burning. I'm not exactly sure what to do though to try and smooth it out... any ideas, do you feel i should use other programs instead???

Do you want modified firmware or factory firmware? Just so you'll know the modified firmware will make your drive region free, remove riplock and allow bitsetting...the factory firmware will only update your drive, none of the other niceties will be included.

You will want 1Y5 from here for the modified firmware if you are sure it is a 3550: http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/

Original firmware can be found at the NEC site.

EDIT: Try Deep Analysis and AEC set to maximum smooth, your wrinkles should be ironed out. These features add a little time, but for the quality tradeoff it is well worth the extra time. Nero Recode is essentially the same program only slightly faster, and not free.

Do you recommend going with the modified? I have no idea what i'm doing, so i'm going by your guidance here. Under my device manag. it says its a ND-3550A, so... i think so??? I already do the deep analysis, but i believe i have it set on max sharp, not max smooth. I'll attempt that. With the modifed firmware, would i still need to use dvd decryptor?

You burner shouldn't have anything to do with your delimma. I use modified firmware, I love it. You will need another tool to help you flash your drive, when you download the bin make sure you follow the instructions explicitly.

win21gui: http://binflash.cdfreaks.com/ It's about half way down the page.

Well, I tried another disk this time with it set at max smooth instead of max sharp with the deep - the results didn't change. It still gets pixelly, sound jumps a bit, things of the nature. I have no idea what to try... Would the change in firmware maybe help? I'm so frusterated at the moment haha, mainly due to the fact that I'm clueless how to get this working again, but I really want it to! If i change the firmware, am i able to put it back how it was originally if i would so choose? Sorry for all of the questions, when it comes to computers, i know point and click haha. I'm as good with a computer as my girlfriend is under a car.
