Let us not forget Plextor.

Very good quality burns with mine.

My next one will have the SATA interface, not sure if anyone else is doing that yet?

However for a cheaper drive I always recommend NEC, as they give good results and are compatible with nearly all media, and seem to go on forever.

I didn't mention Plextor because it is in fact a rebadged BenQ (same with Sony=LiteOn)... Why waste the loot???

If looking to buy a new burner, I would seriously recommend buying one that is bitsetting ready especially for DVD+R DL media. I recommend benq but liteon's, sony's, plextor's, and newer model LG's are also capable. There are some others that are capable of bitsetting and you can check here http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters to see if the one you like is capable. The only pioneers capable are the 109 and 110 and they require being flashed with hacked f/w to do so as do the Nec's.

@aabbccdd,

Plextor are good burners, but I doubt they are the best. I did some burns with a Plextor PX-716A using Ritek R03s at 4x and bitset them to DVD-ROM. These discs did not work on half of my DVD Players. I then did some quality scans and got a rating of "Bad". I also did some PI/PO tests and they were pretty high averaging about 60 PI and 8 PO.

I then burned some movies using a Pioneer DVR-A09. Same Riteks and same burn speed, just not set to DVD-ROM. These discs worked on an additional 3 DVD Players and showed a Quality Rating of "Good" with and average of 15 PI and 3 PO errors. I even burned an ISO twice, once with the Pioneer and once with the Plextor and the Pioneer had half the errors and was still more compatible.

I obviously took back the Plextor and kept the Pioneer which was $50 cheaper.

This made me come to two conclusions:

That particular Plextor burner was worse than the Pioneer A09 in terms of Burn Quality at least for those particular discs.

Bitsetting/Booktyping does not make a big difference for DVD5 Discs. The Pioneer only Booktypes DVDR DL discs and not DVD5 discs, but the DVD5s were more compatible than the DVD5s from Plextor which were set to DVD-ROM. It is more important to choose High Quality Media than to get cheap media and set it to DVD-ROM.

Now, I use Taiyo Yuden DVD+Rs and those are 100% compatible with my DVD players even the ones that are 6 years old and they are not Booktyped to DVD-ROM. And as for errors, there are virtually none. I have had burns where the copy has less errors than the original!!! (1 PI and 0 PO average)

@stonedawg,

As for Dual Layer Discs, all non-generic burners should set thsese to DVD-ROM, but make sure you do some research about them first. You should also look for the Sony DRU-800 or whatever it's called. I've seen these as low as $40 on sale from Best Buy from regular price of $120. That is a very Good deal. I think those are rebadged Lite-ons, but I am not sure.

You are right. Plextor does make some of their own drives, but I would venture to say that roughly 80% of their units sold are rebadged. You probably opt for the premium unit because you are well-versed enough to know about OEM suppliers, but the majority of members searching for their first drive aren't. Maybe I generalized a bit much, but, in this context, I think that my statement was accurate. I don't/can't doubt the quality of Plextor because I have never owned one. I was just saying, for the average user, ANY drive from the "Big 4" I mentioned would be more than up to task...

Besides, i am all about saving some loot...

JaguarGod, Plextor drives are very fond of Taiyo Yuden media ,matter of fact i was on the phone with Plextor today and Taiyo Yuden is the media they use to test ALL there drives. i have used Ritek before with my 712-A and they didnt like Ritek either .do your test with Taiyo Yuden media and i bet you will get lots better results.one thing for sure the Plextor drives are pricey but IMHO i think there well worth the bucks. iam getting TWO PX-716A this week

Taken on what?s been said.

Although I've never had an issue with the Plextor 740A, I have ordered the 716A instead.

Hate the thought that I've been fobbed off with a Benq when I deliberately went out to buy Plextor.

I only use TY discs so hopefully will see a long term improvement it not a visible one now.

@aabbccdd,

I will definately try out a Plextor drive with TYs, but not until I think my burner is starting to go bad. My burner only has about 150 burns and 4 rips, so it is still in good shape. At the time, I only had the Ritek Discs.

The only thing is that TY discs are getting pretty rare and I never buy Discs online because it is more expensive and I do not like giving any important information over the internet.

Jag.....I buy all my TYs over the internet with PayPal...... it's prety safe. Also I disagree about your view on Booktyping/Bitsetting. Since I set my drive for all my DVD+R/Ws to DVD-ROMs I have no problem with any disks..... not even old Memorex disks that I had left over from THE OLD DAYS before I knew better!!!!! And I know that a lot of members use Ritek disks and love them but..... according to DigitalFAQ it's a Second Class Disk at best: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
unless Ritek started to send to YUDEN? Anyway, I'm not saying that your Ritek disks are bad or knocking Ritek. Just that your evaluation of Booktyping is flawed a little. If Booktyping didn't help make a disk more acceptable to most DVD players why then do many many members use this procedure to their disks? And: read #12 in this thread: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/183136
and also here: http://www.k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php
I'm not alone in this..........

I only agree that it is important to use good media! but setting the booktype for your DVD+R to DVD-ROM does help with cheap media too. How much so is to be tested. You have your experiences and I have mine. We each do what's best for US! It's the only way. This is just my 2 cents...... I respect your 2 cents but I hope your respect mine, too.

JaguarGod ,Plextor told me the drives are good for and 6000 hours so it may be awhile before yours starts to go bad lol BTW i have about 4000 plus burns on my 712A and its still fine

And i buy my Taiyo Yuden media online for a couple years with NO problems most from supermediastore.com its very safe and they run about 30 to 35 cents each i usally buy 200 at a time ,thats for the TYGO2 DVD-R 8X media

Every burner(s) has its/their own good and bad side of the story. My Sony DRU710A (rebadged Lite-On 1633S) has been burning flawlessly over a year now, not to mention "Book Typing" -- and obviously, it has never let me down, so far so good.

I think my next one will be BenQ (looks more like it).

It'd be cheaper to just but a regular BenQ lightscribe burner and buy a box for about 20 bucks.
