@celibate
Do you have a floppy disc or something on your pc that may say something like Arttec flash tool? You can try running a windows search for flash tool.
I'll see if I can find the flash tool but it doesn't look promising.

Lightscribe will 'etch/print' pictures/text on a lightscribe dvd. Nero comes with software to do this also.
Here's a pic - (they are a bit pricey - the pic is for cd's but dvd's are look the same).

The SONY dru-810a I recently got for 60 bux after rebate has been working fine. I have no coasters yet using fuji (prodisc) DVD-R and ritek (memorsux) DVD+R DL burns.
Although I think I read somehere that its a rebadged benq drive. Not sure if its the one previously mentioned.
Personally it would take much less time to swap out that drive than try to get that mad dog to work. I have been burning the dvd-r's at 16X trying to see if I would get a Coaster and havent yet after 40 or so...

"Exactly the same, only different".

From what I found on this drive - it was not very good. The company is no longer around - at least on the web. The support has been non exist for this drive since 2004.
So it's probably a combination of things: poor manufacturer, no new firmware to 'teach' the drive read/write strategies of new media, it's time for it to retire.
You'll find usually with better/quality manufacturers you'll get more support and the drive will last much longer. I have a Liteon that's about 2 years old and has done probably around 1000 burns. Rarely a problem with it though I don't use it as much. The last firmware update was 2 months ago.
All drives are not made equally well. Some go sooner than others.

Now for the new drive you'll just need to disconnect it from the power supply and ide cable. Put the new one in it's place. Set the jumper to master. Your drive will come with an instruction manual to follow thru for the installation. Pictures and all (usually).

edit: fix quotes

The cause of your problem is with the brand of media you are using vs the dvd burner, not any specific burning application. The burner does a quick check prior to burning and determines the appropriate burn rate and stores this in its own onboard memory. Once it is in memory it stays there for that particular brand of disk and manufacturer. Sometimes manufacturers lie about their claimed burn rate especially on cheaper brands. I have proven this on my 2 PC's. The same disk brand will burn at different speeds at max as determined by the burner on 2 different PC's using 2 different brand burners but both using the same applications be it Nero, Alcohol etc.

That's why most members here only recommend the quality brands like Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim. Very compatible with almost all drives with consistent results.
It's always best to keep the firmware up to date on the drive - this is what teaches it the write strategies based on the media id codes updated. If the drive doesn't have them it will use a generic write pattern which may or may not work.

@celibate
Forgot to add - you drive should come with new cables - use those instead of the existing ones. Remember to keep it on a separate power connection. Again though this should be covered in the instruction manual. While you waiting for your new drive if you have access to another pc that burns dvd's fine - try swapping the drive and see what happens with the Artec.
Keep us posted!

What are the differences between - dvds and + dvds ?? And which do you recomend ??

The difference is + is said to be superior to the - format (there's a link around here somehwere explaining it all - can't find it right now). + r's can also be booktyped unlike -r's. I use both formats.
Since you are getting a drive that will booktype I would suggest getting the +r's and booktyping them. Booktyping makes the disc appear to be dvd-rom which is almost universally compatible with all players.
Th media you have - verbatim - is great stuff - stick with those or Taiyo Yuden.

RE: Nero burn at only 1x
I have recently installed a new nForce4 based motherboard. So far so good... I then decided that I should install the IDE nForce drivers instead ot the generic Windows ones. When I tried to burn at any of the speeds that I had previously used with the same versions of Nero 7, I made coasters - Error message referred to caching errors. I rolled back to the previous drivers and no coasters. BTW I tries both a Poineer 110D newly released and a LiteOn DVDRW-SHM165P6S (Boxed not OEM!) - same problem - same solution.
I tried 3 different versions of the IDE driver - same result!

DW1650 would be my choice. DW1655 adds lightscribe ability for a few dollars more if you ever want to give it a shot.

Hey celibate
I'd follow LOCOENG choice too. It's an oem drive so that's all you'll get - just the drive usually. If you need help w/ install we can help you thru it.
I think you'll be happy w/ this drive than the Artec.

You should have a compression ratio on the right hand side of the screen. Are you reauhtoring or full discing? BTW, the BenQ's learn the media you use, so the more you burn the better they are supposed to get.

Hi celibate
Under 'automatic' it will give your a % - what % is it? (make sure main movie is highlighted).
Are you still using Verbatim?

@LOCOENG
Is it BenQ Q Suite that's help the drive learn the media? Need your help on that one.
BTW - like you sig - quite fitting :)
