I know the R600 will have GDDR4, but wasn't sure about the 8800GTX. Sure enough from an OcUK sales page:
Quote: 768MB GDDR3 Memory running at 1800MHz
Then I wonder what nVidia can make of some GDDR4!
The Vp2030's currently out of stock here, but nonethless it is on that site:
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDet...ductCode=231796
$430. It costs that much in pounds here...

The 8900GTX will have GDDR 4 on it not the 8800GTX.
As for the long awaited AMD 4x4 offering which was going to kick the Intel?s back into second place, well here are the first stats I've seen for a tested setup, with a summary quote from the Hexus article.
I know this is very early and scores will improve with a better BIOS etc..., but it doesn't look good for AMD, there new all conquering CPU doesn't look as though it's going to win any contests!!
BIOS improvements are also getting more and more out of the Intel's as well.
http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=7348&page=1
Quote: We haven't fully tested megatasking or Windows Vista yet, so we don't want to definitively say Quad FX has had its bottom whipped by Intel's Core 2 Extreme QX6700. We should also wait until AMD and ASUS have fixed the NUMA issues in the L1N64-SLIWS mainboard BIOS before making an absolute declaration. But there were few areas in our testing so far where AMD's new quad-core platform came even close to Intel's with this pre-production preview system, despite the potential technical superiority of the platform.

Yes, depending on the performance/price ratio I'm eventually going to exhaust my bank account and do a complete upgrade to an X2 5600 or a Conroe build and An 8800GTX or R600. I'd for once like to have a fully up to date system for a while :)
I'll be on the lookout for AMD's new processor though. I'm waiting to see if their new quad core is going to be any better than the XQ6700 or not. And I wonder if there'll be any new series on AM2 or if AM2 was a retarded move on AMD's part just to use faster RAM. I wonder because they've got ANOTHER new socket coming out for the dual quad optys.

The FX-74 IS a total letdown, but then it's based on the same old technology which Core 2 Duos beat hands down last time, so it doesn't really come as a surprise to me. When Barcelona arrives, THAT's when I want to compare 4x4 to Intel's solution. An eight core dual Barcelona Opteron system should be incredible. Can intel match it?

how many years since Intel and AMD started fighting each other with their cpu...of course intel will find a new technology to defeat AMD...and thats good it lowers older cpu's price...but damn...8 core duel...that must be fast...

The issue is of course how close the hard disk rack is to the PCI express 16x slots, my X1900XT only has about 1" of clearance from my hard disk drives... Since the 8800GTX is two inches longer it wouldn't fit. Hopefully the R600 will be shorter.

They used to be, the X1900XT is, but from the X1950 series onwards they use HIS' ICEQ cooler, which is much quieter.

My X1800XT is using a dual slot cooler almost exactly the same as the one on my X850XT. It's very loud when turned up to 100%. Almost like a hairdryer. But my case is fairly noisy already. 3 120mm fans and that X1800XT... But it never bothers me because I'm so used to it. I game with some nice Sennheiser 5.1 headphones that block it out quite nicely :)

Actually they do sound very similar. Someone on my corridor at university used a hairdryer and I thought my PC had rebooted and the fan got turned up. LOL. I have 3 120mm fans and an 80 in addition to the CPU, GPU and PSU, but when the system's at idle initially, it's pretty much silent bar the graphics card fan which I can turn off for sort periods of time using ATiTool. The 8800GTX is the biggest card of all...

It's 11" long, R600 should be just over the 9" size of the X1900s...
