Hi Hamsplace,
you can download it from here;
http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdr...5/710A_BYX5.zip

or here;
http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html#DRU-710A

like i say i my burner now burns DVD-R, but the drive still shows as a CD drive and i seem to have another DVD-RW drive that is non existent, but it works and i am not touching it until i see a solution.
your problem seems to substantiate that this is a Nero issue.

Please update the thread when you have done it.

instructions are to ensure everything is closed. DVD writer is on, closed with NO disc inside. double click the .exe and allow to run.
it might seem that it is hanging on the 'programming' section, but please leave it alone, this took about 5 minutes to complete on my PC, seemed a lot longer though.
once run try burning a disc to DVD-R!!

Hi again
No luck . I downloaded the update but still can't burn . My drives both say " CD drive" and the burner won't recognise DVD discs.
Any other ideas ?

Back again ,
I just burnt a music CD - a direct disc to disc copy using Nero and that worked fine. I then went to My Computer and now my drives say
CD Drive (D) CD Drive
DVD Drive (E) CD Drive
How can this be???
Will this be my problem and how can I get my computer to properly recognise the drives correctly ??
Thanks for any help from anyone.

Hi,
to be honest i am not sure....
i know i still have this issue that my DVD-RW drive is still seen as a CD drive. if i was a betting man, i would put money on it being Nero. but for the life of me i would not know where to start.
i believe it may have something to do with registry entries and Nero has changed an entry??? i am guessing here. i have run regseeker on my registry and deleted ALL entries that were not valid, even with Nero uninstalled and this did not seem to solve it. so i am assuming that Nero changes a registry entry that remains valid even when uninstalled.
again this is just a theory like the grassy knoll!!
i ma sorry that i cannot shed anymore light. i am surprised the flash update did nothing.
stupid question....but do you use ghost at all? i used to, but have got lazy, i used to back up my PC before any software install and re ghosted if it caused problems, like i say i got lazy.
i am still going to look into this and see if i can find anything. but meanwhile i also have an issue of my PC shutting down randomly at the drop of a hat!!!
don't we just love IT....not

Thanks KJR42 ,
I guess I'll have to take the tower to a tech sort of guy and have him play with it. Sounds a bit sexist - apologies.

Back again -- this is strange. I checked the 2 aodio CD's I just burnt with Nero and was surprised to see that while all the tracks are on the disc - on one cd of 18 tracks the first 7 songs are listed individually , the last 11 songs come up as track 8 - 47 minutes long . On the second cd the first 3 songs are seperate but the last 8 come up as track 4 - 42 minutes. I burnt the first on 8 and the last one 40.
What do you think.

Hi,

This month I am also seeing similar problem on two independent machines. One has HP DVD drive and other one has MSI DVD drive. Both refuse to burn CDRs by saying insert blank one again and again.

The weird part of the problem is that as soon as I insert blank CDR in, Windows would recognize it as blank CD but would not allow anything to record on it. So far I have used Sonic and Nero as other softwares to burn CDRs but no success.

The MSI one can burn DVDRs but wont allow CDRs.

Only new thing I have installed so far is Windows updates this month. And, I strongly suspect that to be the cause.

Well, I had posted earlier about having a similar problem, only my TssTcorp drive was not recognizing CDs but could recognize DVDs perfectly. After receiving and re-installing Gateway's replacement drive (I believe it is a Samsung LITE-ON), my drive is back to burning and recognizing CDs (and DVDs) just fine.

As far as the investigation goes:

My old TssTcorp drive was about 1.5 years old.

Never burned DVDs on it before the problem occurred, but did burn VERY FEW CDs on it before the problem occurred (probably <10). Before I knew better, Meda= hp and memorex

I noticed the problem after making various software additions:
Installed Dazzle, Pinnacle Studio, ProDAD CameraPro, and updated
from an older version of Nero to Nero 6.3.x.x. Later upgraded to
Nero 6.6.1.4 (all within the same 2-3wk period)

Later uninstalled ProDAD CameraPro

After so many additions, I don't know just how helpful this info will be in your investigation, but I can tell you that after installing the new drive, it was quite functional with Nero 6.6.1.4 (although I downgraded to Nero 6.6.0.18 as was suggested by some of the posters here)

Etiology:
Overuse- not likely, only burnt few CDs in 1.5 years
Defective hardware to begin with- possibly, I did fail quite often when attempting to burn (but was using Memorexes and HPs...)
Software additions- possibly; drive may have been corrupted by some of these additions

Whatever the case, I hope you guys find a solution to your burning problems.

Hello Hamspace.

Do you have more than one CD/DVD drive?
Do you have Nero InCD installed?
Have you ever installed and run Nero ImageDrive?
Do you have Daemon Tools or Alcohol 120% installed?

WinXP usually IDs both blank CDs and DVDs as CDs, since WinXP has native support for CDs and not DVDs.

Hello,
First post but been burning for a long time I am having the same problem as KJR42 with my dvdburner being recognized as a cd drive when blank DVD-R is in it. My problem is that the disc burn fine and playback in the computer but not in any of my dvd players? I noticed problems starting after I tried to burn a sony dvd movie can't remeber which title but after that all my burns where having glitches where they would lock up. I have read other post that said sony is putting things on there disc to change the registry of your computer (could this be my problem) I have not changed any software I use Nero 6 DVD Shrink & then Decryptor with AnyDVD in the backgroung along with css regionfree like I have for a long time with no problem. Since the sony disc I have more drives than ever I plug my ipod up and its J: drive I only have 2 dvd burners both show dvd until you put a blank DVD-R in and it shows cd. Was anyone else trying to burn a sony movie title when all there problems started? any advice would be great

Hello Pro2know.

If the DVDs play on your computer but not in your standalones, it's likely the result of using poor quality media and/or burning too fast.

Can you provide your Nero log from a burn, the last section only that begins with the program serial number. Delete the serial number before posting. The log is in the path:

Program Files -> Ahead -> Nero -> NeroHistory

Good quality media are Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, and made in Japan labeled media by Fuji and Sony.

Burn speeds usually should not exceed 1/2 the rated speed of the media.

Making sure th burner firmware is up to date can also help.

Hi - I have a quick question...I am trying to copy an already copied DVD and I have done this before with no problems, however, the disc I am currently trying to copy is a DVD -R (by fuji film) and the programs I use will not "encode" the disc and I get an error reading at exactly the same point (10%) each time I try it. The error message reads: "DVD shrink encountered and error and cannot continue. Failed to read file D:\ Data error. Cyclic redundency check." My question is if you know a way or a program that I can use to copy from DVD-R discs. I use Sony + R discs. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hello Dsurf.

There really isn't any difference in reading a -R or +R disk. The CRC (cyclic redundency check) error indicates that the program is unable to overcome an error in reading the disk. Unless the disk is copy protected, this error is most likely due to a poor quality burn due to poor quality media being used or burning too fast, a scratch or defect in the disk, or a dirty disk.

Carefully clean the disk wiping from the center to the outside rather than in a circle around the disk. Be sure to inspect the disk for any particles that may be on the surface before doing so. Also inspect for scratches on the surface.

If the above doesn't help, then try reading the disk with DVD Decrypter:

http://filehippo.com/download_dvd_decrypter/

Sometimes trying to read on a different drive can overcome some CRC errors. Some are just better readers than others.

If that doesn't work, you're probably out of luck unless you want to try ISOBuster.

Hello Dsurf
If you are trying to copy a copy of a movie I never use shrink because it has already been decripted I just use decryptor and change to read save it to the hard drive then change back to write and put your blank in and bam your done. My brother has problems when he does his like this until I told him to turn off AnyDVD while you are making copies of a copy. Another tip that I have learned if you are trying to shrink a movie and it shows that it will be 100% on shrink I just use decriptor to burn to hd and then to write with AnyDVD 6.011 in the background and it works faster.

I use verbatim disc on burning but I tried your suggestion last night and set the speed to 4X and burned and it is recognized in my dvd player I have not had time to watch the movie to see if it locks up but at least it is being recognized. It is strange I have always had the burn speed at max for 200+ movies and have never had a problem unless my burner is just getting old. Or could it be a bad box of dvds I always by the same ones 30 pack. Thanks for all your help I will let you know if the movie plays without glitches

I wonder if this is related to that space ship sighting on june 1st where a whole bunch of dvd drives disapeared over roswell , Other than that though, I never use nero for encoding or even burning unless I have to use burning rom, It always messes up my computer. I think it also messed up my drive once, I couldnt burn at full speed anymore for a long time till I reflashed the firmware but thats another story.

I've got the same problems... Sony DRU 710A upgraded with the latest firmware... drive is about 1.5 years old and I had previously only burned about 30-40 dvd discs and a handfull of CDs... now the drive doesn't recognize blank dvds... from time to time it will recognize one... but it can't write to the disc... I've been through all the typical "you've got bad media" crap...

I have run the Sony Drive Check program and it fails on the last step where it tries to read back from the drive.

I'm guessing it is just a piece of crap drive, like quite a few others out there from the looks of the postings all around the internet...

unless there is some smoking gun regarding some sort of spyware or screwed up microsoft or Nero update/time bomb, I'd say these drives are pieces of junk...

I would love to know if these drives have built in "time bombs" that force all of us customers to have to purchase brand new drives no sooner than a couple months after the warranties are no longer valid.

I wish there was a central website for each brand of DVD burner that could be used to start gathering information like this to see if maybe a class action law suit should be brought against the manufacturers... or better yet.. somebody tell me the brand that I can rely on. All of the "consumer reports" out there only talk about a product when it comes out, not about it's reliability 2 years after the fact.

Looks like other people have had problems with that drive also http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=132196 I prefer just a lite-on
40$ drive, burns rw,dl all that and I've never had a problem with one.

I have the OEM version of this, the Lite-On 1633. It was never a good burner for me and I junked it early on. I've had good success with both NEC and BenQ. The problem with buying a rebadged name brand like Sony is one is usually, but not always, dependent on the rebadger for firmware updates that are usually not forthcoming.

This is interesting. I have the exact same problem, I installed a Pioneer Slimline RW K-16 into my Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop in January. It's been working fine until the last couple of weeks. I can no longer read write DVD-R. DVD+R is OK.

After reading through this post, I'm beginning to wonder if something more sinister is going on. Perhaps those Roswell Aliens connected to the internet and are attempting to take over Earth...

I'll go through all of the steps above and report back my progress.

I have Nero Version 6.6.0.1 so I'll change to 6.6.0.18 and see if that helps.

Hello Room335.

Nothing jumped out at me. Sometimes it's better to post a Nero history log if you've tried to burn with Nero. The log is one of the following paths depending on the version.

Program Files > Ahead > Nero > NeroHistory
Program Files > Nero > Nero7 > Core > NeroHistory

Individual log sections begin where the program serial number is dislayed immediately after a titled header. Be sure to delete any serial numbers and other identifying info before posting.

Have you tried uninstalling the burner with Device Manager?

Right click on My Computer and select Properties.
Click the Hardware tab.
Click the Device Manager button.
Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.
Right click on the DVD burner name and select Uninstall.
Restart the system.

Will the burner recognize burned -R media when you insert it into the burner?

Have you tried other brands of -R media?
restart

I've had these problems before and my only solution was replacing the drive. It starts off with seeing only the CD, ends up with seeing nothing. Save yourself a lot of headaches and wasted disks. Get a new drive, you'll probably save enough from all the possible bad writes to buy a new one.

No.

Yes, but it does not read the disc.

+R R/W works with Nero but not Adobe Encore.

The history file is extremely long so I'll post a link to it later.

Your help is appreciated.

Restart - I hope it's not a bad drive, I just got it in January.

I ran the Dell diagnostic software and it says the drive is OK. Plus it's ackowledged in the Nero info program.

Anyone know of any software that can evaluate the DVD R/W -+ drive to see if it's burning out?
