First thing, scroll down and look at the fist piece of text that has a "*"...read the "piece of text" (if you don't, you might brick your psp!)
Before we start you will need this:
1. Patience...in following instructions and not pressing buttons at random because one wrong thing you do...there is no going back! Unless you buy the chip which is 100$ US (installation excluded)
2. Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (you won't need it for ever...if you don't like this game...just rent it for the downgrading process.
3. Your AC adapter (it's not mandatory but I would very much recomend it just incase)
4. A PSP with a Firmware 2.6 and under (Yes thats right even 2.6 but the reason I say 2.5 on the title and maybe 2.6 is because I have only done this on a 2.5...in other words, my psp)
So this is what you need to do: (if you need the downgrader, PM me and I will send it to your email) either that or download it at http://www.freewebs.com/psp_hacking/Downloads.html (if I am not allowed saying the website...MODS PM me and I will take the website off...)
1. Assuming you have the downgrader (it is really called the downdater) you have to get the folder called 2.50 and copy it to this location on your psp: E:/PSP/GAME ("E" replaced by what letter your psp occupies) (if you have a firmware 2.60, you do the same thing but copy and paste the folder called 2.60)
2. Apparently someone with a 1.5 is suppose to give you a file called Downdater but when I downloaded my Downgrader, I got that folder in my download...so...if you don't have that folder, once again PM me and I will send it to you... So..you have to copy the folder called Downdater in the root of your memory stick (just simply E: in my case...if your psp is another letter than replace E: with that letter)
3. Boot the GTA Eloader (if you need this, PM me and I will send it to you..)
4. Now choose "Downdater Test"
5. Now the screen will be black for five minutes and you will see that your meemory stick is being read...
6. When the process is done you should get a message saying that the disc does not work...(atleast I did) Don't worry, thats a good sign...now reset your psp...(in my case I had to reset it twice) and there you go!! You have a 1.5!!
*None of this should be attempted if you bought a psp and it was already a 2.5 or 2.6, it should have been under 2.5 then for some reason you have upgraded it...or more specifically you should not have the TA-082 Motherboard (to check if you do, open the UMD drive and check the top right on the green motherboard part...if there is text saying "1C9001" (or something like that) or any text for that matter, (I think) you cannot downgrade and thats final! And if you succesfully downgraded and you want to be extra safe then (this is a rumor) upgrade to firmware 2.00 then downgrade back to 1.5...(I personally don't think this is needed though...)
P.S.
If there is anything I should add/edit ppl, tell me!
*Thanks to the ppl who got access to the Kernel of the PSP and thanks also to the ppl who made this Downgrader!
If I insult you...don't get offended...my insults are "friendly insults"...I know this sounds stupid (ridiculous) but I am fet up of writing, "no offense" in my posts...

I can't add anything about using the downgrader, but after getting to 1.5, you should upgrade to 2.0 and then downgrade again using MPH's downgrader (to get rid of any thing left over by the 2.5/2.6 firmware)

no it isn't. There are some things apparently left over (so I've read) and at any rate, MPH's has been tried and true, this one doesn't have the track record it does. It'll put your mind at ease at the very least (kay, maybe you don't have to, but it would be something I would do)

Don't try it... it will brick your PSP (if it even works at all, so the best case scenerio is you accomplish nothing)

It won't work on 2.7/2.71 but that was the bad news now here is the good news...I would put my hopes up for atleast the 2.7 to have a downgrader availble for it in 2 months..
P.S.
If I update to 2.0 and downgrade again to 1.5...is it risky? If so..is it less risky than downgrading a 2.5 to a 1.5? Well this is what I will do and I recomend others to listen: DO NOT DO THAT UNLESS YOU EXPERIENCE ANY PROBLEMS with your current 1.5..

Couldnt try if you wanted.
2.7 is what blocked the GTA exploit.
So you my friend, have nothing.
unless someone decides to go look for an exploit elsewhere.
And it only took, what, close to a year to find this one.
Say hi to Ramses for me.

There is absolutely no point in upgrading to 2.0 just to go back to 1.5, the weird problems people are having is almost likely to do with the 1.5fw dump they used because i have not had one single problem :)

I've tried that but its a no go... I have seen other people load videos of them successfully updating there psp's and it takes them over 3-4 minutes give or take for it to flash. So if when I flash and it stops after a few seconds I think there may be something wrong with the files I have. Could someone please send me correct files or tell me where I went wrong.

when it says that the disc could not be read...that is a good sign...it means that it is downgraded...you will have to reset it a few times..(not one time after the other but after you set the time for example, you then reset it...)
