OK guys i thought i start a thread debating the pay programs over the freeware programs . what rips/transcode/burns better, whats easier to use, quality etc. also nOObs can post there questions here too on how to rip/transcode/burn

everyone knows how big a fan i am of CloneDVD 2 + AnyDVD it does a great job its fast the quality is good and less cleanup (deleting files etc.) but does the freeware like "RipIt4Me" do a better job since your running it though more programs like FixVTS is it making a cleaner file? this should be a good debate and good information for everyone.

i used most the programs out there and CloneDVD 2 + AnyDVD is hard to beat BUT ive used "RipIt4Me" the last couple weeks also and its pretty much idiot proof and does a great job. I'm going to play them back on my new Sony SXRD 60" and see what looks best and will post soon

the quality scans of your movies are for how your burner burns to disk. That's what I get from my scans..... but if you're comparing quality of transcoders in RipIt4Me to CloneDVD2 with AnyDVD in back ground then you would have to show a frame for each..... and then you're comparing it to Shrink to CloneDVD2 as transcoders .... which would be better! It's definately a matter of opinion.... as the same with trying to determine what's better to use in DVDRebuilder-- ProCoder2 or CCE as your encoders. If you're going for speed..... then go with AnyDVD+Clone...... it's a great combo. but if the compression is less than 80% I use my good ole reliable encoder for best quality (DVDRebuilder Pro with CCE) as compared to a transcoder. Sooooooo you really can't go with Scans to compare the quality of the burn since if you're using the same disks the scans won't show much differences because you're burning with the same burner and the scans are for showing how the write strategies are for the disk that you are burning with the burner! At least that's what I view DVDInfo Pro Scans and Nero CD/DVD quality scans are for. Not for quality of the programs but for quality of write straegies for the burners for each disk.

You can't measure the video quality. That depends on what you do after the files are on your hard drive. What you want to compare is the quality of the rip. Which program has removed all unreferenced files and useless cells. Whatever programs you use, what you want to end up with are clean files which should then produce a great backup. Whatever you are satisfied with.

It all comes down to time and convenience. Both bundles are excellent. For higher compression, Shrink (RipIt4Me) would beat CloneDVD2 as it has many more user controllable "tweaks," but it would take much longer. As far as decrypting and cleaning up files go, AnyDVD wins as it incorporates the abilities of both DVDDecrypter and FixVTS in its "on-the-fly" removal of protections. You truly can't go wrong with either. For the budget-conscious, RipIt4Me is an unbeatable value being that it's free... AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 are well worth the money, though. To truly round out the arsenal, one would need to have DVDRebuilder with HC, CCE, or ProCoder2 for the movies with unusually high compression and episodic discs. Now that combo is truly unbeatable at a cost- time. I have, and have used, somewhat extensively, ALL of the above. I also use Recode2 pretty often. I use the combo from Slysoft 90% of the time, though.

I hear you TeflonMyk.... and seem you and me not only agree but do the same! For Episode DVDs I use AnyDVD + DVDDecrypter to rip and then use DVDRemake Pro to take out stuff that is unwanted, then DVDRebuilder w/CCE ....... unbeatable for quality!

RipIt4Me is great as it uses all the programs I love. Basically I do what TeflonMyk does...... as I wrote above..... if the compression is 80% quality then it's AnyDVD + CloneDVD2...... anything less it's DVD-RB for me!

For ease of use and user friendliness you cannot beat AnyDVD and CloneDVD. They are updated and cause very little conflicts. Well worth the money and I do not regret buying them. If you are a casual burner, or a person who just does not want to a lot of hassle these are the programs for you. If you are a person who likes to see what programs can do what and the challenge, or just can't afford the pay programs then the free are also excellent. There is also enough choice in them, you have DVDFab, DVD Decrypter, VobBlanker, DVD Shrink, RipIt4Me, FixVTS, DVD Rebuilder free including free encoders, and ImgBurn. All from good developers and get the job done. Using the free programs can sometimes be daunting for new users but once you play with them for awhile they too become as easy as the pay. It still comes down to personal preference. I think FixVTS produces a very clean file and have no problems opening it in Recode which is my transcoder of choice for 80% of movies. For the large compression nothing beats Rebuilder especially the pay version.

I used to make it sort of a challenge to use only free programs. Now I have shifted my focus to 1. Best possible Quality and 2. Ease of use. These are my priorities in that order. for these reasons, I paid for and use AnyDVD, DVD Rebuilder Pro and DVD Remake Pro. These are not the only options there are, but for me they are the best and worth the money.
I still have countless other programs in my arsenal and do use them on occasion.

Ripit4me with fixvts does a better job cleaning up the original ripped folder than AnyDVD does. I was having some problems with menu functionality and playback on folders ripped with AnyDVD when I ran it through dvdremake. No problems whatsoever with ripit4me followed by fixvts. AnyDVD doesn't clean up the menu files as well as ripit4me does. Make sure all the advanced options are checked in preferences (especially "remove useless menu cells").

For over all video quality, dvd-rb and CCE or procoder 2 are second to none. I rarely mess with any transcoders anymore period.

Mort i think you may have something there,(using AnyDVD only) i have notice on some dvds (Disney mostly)some playback problems doing the movie only.

arniebear, is there ANY advantage when using RipIt4Me to run the file though Vob Blanker before using DVD Shrink or does FixVTS take care of everything or are they not compatible with each other.

I believe FixVTS does a better job than VobBlanker it cleans everything. There is no need for VB once the file is through FVTS. It must be good as this is what AnyDVD incorporated in their ripper although it is several versions behind, there is some rumor that the slysoft people neglected to ask the FixVTS developer for permission, mind you I only heard that on the side. But for a freebie RipIt4Me with FixVTS is darn good. I happily went along with AnyDVD and Clone but the first time I used RipIt I thought this is good, and use it regularly and the program has really improved since it first came out. The developers have put a lot in it so I give them credit.

For ease of use ......no doubt AnyDVD w/ CloneDVD.

I've tried some of the free programs mentioned & had a more difficult time backing up w/ those.

So what I use is AnyDVD w/ Nero Recode.( version 6.6.0.16 )
Many times lately I've had to rip movie to HD using the AnyDVD ripper.
Then open it up w/ Recode ,very good results.

If compression not too much I'll use Clone w/ AnyDVD.

snoland, to use DVD Decrypter with AnyDVD you need to set it up this way

To use DVD Decrypter in conjunction with AnyDVD as stated per Olli ->OF SLYSOFT AND CloneDVD

Proceed to the DVD Decrypter Opening Page - Tools - Settings

I/O Tab - Click on "Elby CDIO-Elaborate Bytes"

General Tab - un-check "Check For Structure Protection"

I have never tried ripit4me, but it seems like a more user friendly version of the PSL plugin for PGCEdit.

Personally, I go for quality above all else and it is impossible to get the same quality from software that does all the work. What I consider quality is both visual quality and playback quality. Definately not a newbie approach, but it took me roughly 6 months from knowing nothing to getting to this point.

I use the combo of DVD Decrypter + IFOEdit + PGCEdit + Menushrink + FixVTS + VobBlanker + DVD Shrink. This gives the highest possible video quality and perfect DVD playback and navigation.

I think with the Freeware you get the same as with AnyDVD + CloneDVD2 only more options to mess with. This can intimidate someone with little or no experience.

My opinion is that AnyDVD + CloneDVD2 will yeild the greatest speed and give acceptible results. CloneDVD2 can remove titles and it automatically corrects some errors, so it is sort of Vob Blanker + DVD Shrink.

However, VobBlanker + DVD Shrink do a better job than CloneDVD2 alone. VobBlanker allows for better cutting of movies since you can do it by frame and it warns you of any problems. DVD Shrink (or Nero Recode) uses a 2-pass trandcoding so it allows for the movie to be compressed with better quality. It is much slower than CloneDVD2, but as compression goes up, the quality difference becomes more and more obvious (with limits of course). I did single frame comparisons a while back and CloneDVD2 is about equal to DVD Shrink with no advanced Analysis.

Given this, I assume the differences are as follows:

AnyDVD + CloneDVD2 is faster than Ripit4me, but ripit4me gives more quality and possibly better results.

As with most things, the more manual/user input the better the results. Ripit4me is an automation of a semi-manual approach, so it is expected for it to do a better job, only slower.

I set up DVD Decrypter like you mentioned, using AnyDVD.
( very easy to do)

So now that I have it set up like that,so now I can just use
DVD Decrypter to burn movie to HD, then use Shrink or Recode to put onto disc ?

DVD Decrypter will now be using AnyDVD in the background ?

Perfect dvd playback and navigation yes but highest possible video quality no. DVD Shrink doesn't compare to dvd-rb with CCE or procoder 2 or even hc encoder especially on projects that require more than 80% compression. I agree that DVD Shrink does produce better video quality (when advanced analysis and hqaec are used) than clonedvd2 but neither compare to rb/cce, procoder2, or hc.

I don't understand. You are comparing a transcoding program with a ripper. Video quality all boils down to the amount of compression and compression program being used. An encoder will aways produce better video quality than a transcoder period.

I will absolutely say that for Me, AnyDVD & CloneDVD 2 has got to be the Best. Money very well spent for what they do. I have backed up Movies with over 40% compression and they played back flawlessly.
CloneDVD 2 has a Very good transcoder. With AnyDVD running in background, I have yet to see any I can not back up. I used to like Nero Recode & still have it,
but very rarely use it since CloneDVD 2.
Slysoft has the Best! (MY Opinion).

I have used most of the Freewares and they used to be OK, but time consuming and resource hogs. The along came new protections.
I vote for AnyDVD + CloneDVD 2!

Use The Best Media for The Best Burns! TYs, Verbs,(Made in Taiwan) Sony MIJs (YUDEN000 T02), Sony Made in Taiwan DVD+R 16x, Maxell MIJ, RITEK G05.

Make sure you got the newest firmware, 1.10 it is really great sure gave a boost to my drive. It is burning Verb 16x which I burn at 8x in 7 minutes, before with the 1.09 I had some lag time.
