Forms of region encoding and RCE is Region Coding Enhancement, only really found on region 1 DVD's. It wont matter if they are the same region as the dvd drive its in, since they can be reoved. It is different from the CSS encryption used to prevent straight copying.

csummit Ok. I did exactly like you described. I changed the settings in dvd decriptor to not remove RC and RCE. Then i removed it with IFO edit. What program did you use to compress and back up the dvd

I used DVD Shrink, but any compression program should work correctly.

Why not use DVD Shrink to do the ripping and compression?

Ok, I will try dvdshrink to compress, since you guys tried that program and it should work. Also I have the program that sony provides with that computer, I believe that should work to burn. Thx for the help everyone.

Doesn't DVDshrink only let you do the movie and does not let you take the entire disc? Maybe my dvdshrink is just old but that is what I thought. Also, my version does not do episodal because it only does the movie not the menu too.

Oriphus,

How long does it take to do the entire process? How is the quality? How is the compatablility with stand-alone players? I have an older sony and it gives me a lot of problems playing backups at times.

IMHO its as good as the best of them. Take about 8mins to do just a rip. If you need to rip and compress by around 30% you are talking 30mins. If you want to use the higher quality Deep Analysis it will take about 45mins. It is compatible with all standalones i have tested on - thats a lot. Generally compatibility is more down to media than doftware to rip/compress

Ok. Im having a problem with DVD Shrink. After i remove all the region stuff with ifo edit, i go to DVD Shrink and try to open the file, but it says its encountered an error and that it cant continue. i dont know if its just the region setting in ifo edit or what. and if it is what region do i put it as.

I also suffered from this. As a quick workaround do the following:

Load VTS_2_0.IFO in IFOEdit.
Navigate to VTS_PGCITI
Now for each of the 6 episodes (VTS_PGC_1 - 6) do the following.
Scroll down to the Pre commands.
Command 4 should have some sort of if comparison and a Call VMG PGC. Right click, click edit command and replace it with a NOP.

Save the IFO and click DVD Play to test. If it works - woo hoo. If it doesnt...never mind, I tried.

csummit,
when using decryptor and removing the RC/RCE for Simpsons Season 3, where is this option under settings? File mode, IFO Mode, or ISO mode

It's under File Mode.

I used this work around because when I ripped using DVD Shrink I was getting read errors halfway through the rip. DVD Decryptor works perfectly every time. If you can get it to work though, that's definitely the way to go.

Yeah, i agree with that. Use DVD Decrypter and then DVD Shrink/DVD2one if DVD Shrink cannot rip it. DVD Decrypter rips virtually everything.

Ok, i know this might sound stupid. I did everything that was explained. I ripped the disc using DVD Shrink. i removed the regions using ifo edit. But now i end up with a bunch of files and i dont know which one to use to burn it. If someone could help me figure this out, do i copy all of them or do i just use one to back it up. thanx for your help on this problem.

Nero should burn the VIDEO_TS directory, or you can use Classic_0.90B5 (look on doom9.org) to create an image file that can be burned with DVD Decrypter.

Is there any other program that would work on burning it. I cant find the link to download Classic_0.90B5. I have a sony vaio and i usually use the burning software that came with it. I think its called record now. Will that work? And if it does do i just record all of the Video_TS directories or just one. Thanx for your help on this

hi when you use record now don't use any of the the make copies programme close it and then go to file, new job(data) then look around half way down the page and you have select files. from here you can call in your video_ts folder and audio_ts folder the latter you must have for it to play in any stand alone dvd player even tho it has no info in it

You add VIDEO_TS folder from 'edit' > 'select file or folder' after new data job is easier.

http://www.chrismccann.co.uk/recordnowmax.htm

AUDIO_TS folder is not needed...

Had the same problem with Family Guy SE1 DSK1

Ripped files with DVD Decrypter and fixed the RCE block as follows.

There are 2 things you need to do to make a region-free DVD. First is to clear the "prohibited regions" mask in video_ts.ifo, this can be done with IFOEdit. The second is to hunt down any RCE code as outlined below. RCE is simply using the interactive instruction set of DVD players to either show you the movie, or show you a nasty message. Once reprogrammed, the disk shows the movie regardless of region code.

These are tricky, and if you really want to make the disk region free, you'll need to study the virtual machine code. What is happening is in some PGC, probably the First_Play (FP_PGC) a check is made on the player's region code by reading SPRM 20, and a branch is made accordingly.
IFOEdit can help, but you'll need to make the changes by hand, in HexEdit.

Example:
---- Part of VIDEO_TS.IFO - first play PGC: ---------
1.Pre Command: JumpSS VMGM pgcn 1
-------------------------------------------------------

---- Part of VIDEO_TS.IFO - VMGM_PGCI_UT - LU_1: ----
1.Pre Command: Set GPreg<9> mov SPreg<player region code>
2.Pre Command: Set GPreg<9> and sval#<15>
3.Pre Command: If GPreg<9> != #cval<1> then Goto line# 7
...
-------------------------------------------------------

If you take a look to the commands of the first play PGC, then you will see a Jump-command to the Menu-PGC 1 in VIDEO_TS.IFO.
Now expand in the tree-view the table: 'VMGM_PGCI_UT'.
Go into the PGC-Menu-1 and scroll down to the commands.

The first command reads the player-region code, and in the 3td line, it's compared with something (MpuCoder assumed it is compare with value 1, so it's a Region 1 Disc), and if it does not match, then it jump's to line (command) 7.

So this third line is the key! Now just put a 'NOP' in there, and your region-problem is gone!
To put a nop in there, simple double click the line, and in the Hex-Edit View put a zero over every value.

Enjoy your new Region-Free Disc. :-)

Here's some basic rules for modifying commands:
1) don't move anything, there may be jumps in other parts of the disk to the part you're modifying.
2) don't change the loading of registers, other parts may depend on the values
3) Once you find a jump based on the region code either NOP it if jumps because the region is wrong, or remove the condition if it jumps for a correct region

Simpsons seems to do the jump at the start of each episode pgc rather than once before the menu, maybe thats why DVD Decrypter didnt disable it properly.

Do you have any links to info on dvd vm code?

I backed up all 4 disks of "The simpsons season 3"with zyphlen's method,it as follows--------> Part of VIDEO_TS.IFO - VMGM_PGCI_UT - LU_1: ----
1.Pre Command: Set GPreg<9> mov SPreg<player region code>
2.Pre Command: Set GPreg<9> and sval#<15>
3.Pre Command: If GPreg<9> != #cval<1> then Goto line# 7

To put a nop in there, simple double click the line, and in the Hex-Edit View put a zero over every value.

all you hvae to do is open "VIDEO_TS.IFO" with IFOEdit then go to "VMGM_PGCI_UT" then go to PGC-Menu-1 then scroll down to the command "pre command #3" and double click it and then put in all 0's,then click ok,now make sure you click save in IFOEdit in the same directory from wich the ifo your editing,it may or may not say"are you sure you want to exit without saving?"even though you already clicked save, ignore this message, just click quit and open IFOEdit and reopen the ifo to see if your edit was saved by looking at the pre command that you edited earlier.

over all just click yes to everything after you click yes when you save a change.

this method has worked for me but i did lose 4 or five dvd-r's in the prosses :0( but you don't have too, unlike my dumb ass,you should open the edited movie in power dvd,if it plays after you click on the final menu of an episode, you can now burn these files to a dvd-r without fear of a coaster :0)

if this failes, try these in addition to the above Load VTS_2_0.IFO in IFOEdit.
Navigate to VTS_PGCITI
Now for each of the 6 episodes (VTS_PGC_1 - 6) do the following.
Scroll down to the Pre commands.
Command 4 should have some sort of if comparison and a Call VMG PGC. Right click, click edit command and replace it with a NOP.

this method is xan's not mine, nor is the first,i'm just letting you guys know that one of or both has worked for me,i have done the first method without the second method so in theory, the first method was the only thing i had to do but that's just me,try everything just to make sure.:0)

Thank to you guys,as i am typing this message, enjoying the whole box set of the simpsons season 3 ;0)
P.S. I use DVD2One for prossesing of my dvd movies so they can fit on a 4.7 gb dvd-r,DVD2One is the best program out there in my opinion, never let me down once,i suggest you give it a try :0)
