ok, so i fiddled around with the mod and its working. While my ps3 was open, i decided to check the 5 minute rule, and it actually takes more than 5 minutes to stop. According to my count, it took close to 9 minutes to stop. So people that are waiting only 5 minutes are probably fucking up their systems. Just thought i'd let you guys know.

it takes like 6-7 minutes for me. I just wait 10 minutes. 10 minutes for 4-5 hours of fun. I can do that. BTW, i dont see much harm done by just ejecting and reinserting withing few seconds anyway. I swapped like 100x, dvd still didnt fail on me yet. other than the circuit board that I shorted out :(.

So Swap Magic 3.6 doesn't work for pizzag, but works for viks?
Wtf?
Anyway mine's in the mail so you'll hear from a third party soon.
In the meantime, I wait for 10 minutes too. It's easy because i set the screen saver to 10 minutes so as soon as the display dims i know it's safe to swap.

The only other positive feedback for Swap Magic is for version 2.0..
Calling pizzag a vulgar person is really uncalled for btw.
What the hell is wrong with you, jealous?

I bought a PS3 today, and I was thinking about doing this, but since I just got it, I'm going to put it on hold for a while. I'll probably do all the external work, just to get some practice.
I've never used a soldering gun before, so I might as well practice on something less expensive first. Once I feel comfortable enough, I'll work on my PS3.
BTW, everyone's been doing a good job so far. I wish I had something to contribute, but I have nothing right now.

Good luck with that LaPapita.
Just make sure you read this thread entirely and watch the pictures.
Soldering the 2 wires on the motor is dead easy but opening the PS3 not so easy.
Today they announced firmware 1.90 with this interesting feature :
? Option menu now includes ?eject disk?
I wonder what impact it'll have on this pizzag switch mod, if any..

Hey tsrps3, i was one of the person who clap my hands for Pizzag, and congratulated him for his funtastic idea, but i have to remaind you that he didn´t invent the Swap Mode for PS3, he just created a beter way to do it.I dont even know if he is a Modchiper, or just a creative person.I think that he didnt even understud why his Drive stoped reading DVD, and it´s normal if he is only a creative person but not if he is a modchiper.
sorry my bad English.
Be well everybody.

do you guys think it would be ok to boot a dual layer dvd and swap with a single layer dvd? i don't want to take any more chances with my laser. you guys had me real worried talking about a burnt out chip. i'm glad it wasn't that.

of course it's NOT OKAY!
it's like swapping an apple with an orange.
The laser is set for DVD9 and you're feeding it a DVD5!
Do not do that!
Only swap with for the exact same type of media.
Later,
TSR
Also wait at LEAST 8 minutes before swapping so the laser stops by itself.
Unless you're using Swap Magic.
I highly suggest you read your own thread ;)

ok people, i want to get power for the switch from the ps3. i've read some people have used the 5 volts from the blu-ray drive plugin. How is that working? anyone know what the voltage is for the original motor wires? i just used 3 volts on the wall plugin adapter because it was low and worked nicely. also if 5 volts is too much, what's this talk about using resistors to lower the voltage? i understand the concept, but have never done it. i need opinions. i don't have a voltage tester so i can't find out for myself=( thanks

OK guys, i got my Swap Magic version 3.6 + Jpn today.
Report:
- DVD disc, boots OK but you can hear the laser struggling. Main menu screen appears. I swap the disc with a backup and hear a huge screeeeetch, ie the laser wasn't stopped. I repeat Swap Magic 3.6 DOESN'T STOP THE DISC FROM spinning. so you gotta wait the same time around 8-10 minutes to make sure the ps3 stopped the laser by itself before inserting your backup, ie: it's fucking useless if you already have a game with a big TOC like Devil May Cry.
- CD disc: Mounts in the XMB alright but this piece of shit doesn't boot. Just by looking at the bottom of the disc you know there's gonna be trouble. It's like they added part of many discs together so there are huge gaps where the laser doesn't see shit and so it skips a lot.
anyway, the point is this crap doesn't boot so forget about the Swap MAgic advantages.
Since i didn't have an original PS2 CD with a big TOC, i'll use it to boot PS2 CD backups from the XMB at least.
So conclusion, Swap Magic 3.6 doesn't STOP THE LASER. You gotta wait the same as any original you might already have. The only advantage is the big TOC for both CD & DVD versions.
Good news, 1.90 still stop the disc after 10 minutes and backups run, same as before. ;)
Bye for now.

...ouch! from what i've been reading, it seems like this method either burns an important chip or it messes up the laser. I'll probably just buy one of those new slimline PS2 and use that for back-ups.

headuno, sure you can do everything you want, watch flicks or listen to music on PS3 while waiting for the 10 minutes, no problem with that. Just don't do any activity on the disc.
yantz, your PS3 bought in Singapore is probably NTSC-J, so compatible with Swap Magic 3.6 Japanese version, just like the one I received and tested a few posts above. Just look on the back of the console or on the box to confirm, it should say NTSC-J.
I've been thinking I might get rid of my Swap Magic 3.6 Japan version since I already have a big TOC disc for DVD backups and I'm gonna end up buying an original PS2 CD for swap like REZ anyway.
So if you want my "Swap Magic 3.6 + Japan version" discs or if anyone else reading this thread is interested, let me know. (brand new in original slipcase with the piece of plastic to swap on ps2)

Yeah Swap Magic 3.6 + is useful as a big TOC DVD & CD, but it doesn't stop the laser either dude!! Wtf do you have a magical version maybe? :p

Nope, DUDE, i don´t have an magical version or...hey, wait a minute, hooo yes i have an magical one, because it says SWAP "MAGIC" 3.6 plus.Look man, im not the only one confirming that it works, if you read some late posts you will find out that there are more users confirming it.Im a modchiper for quite some years and a Moderator on www.gsmpt.net in the Consoles/Dvd sector, and i know very well what am i saying.I was the first one giving the alert for the danger to swap any kind of media in the PS3 unit with the Laser spinning.I think you dont even know how to see if the Laser is spining or if its just the motor making the DVD totate at a low rotacion. But you are the smartest, so let me know what a good solution will you find out.
