The launch 20gb and 60gb support PS2 games. The ORIGINAL 80gb, the one that had motorstorm bundled with it has partial PS2 support. All other versions do not support PS2 games what so ever.
Sony could in theory release an update to make the rest of the PS3 models have PS2 support, highly unlikely, but possible.
As far as I know ALL PS3 models support PS1 games.
Hope this helps.
20gb Launch Model Number: CECHB01
60gb Launch Model Number: CECHA01
80GB Motorstorm Bundle Model Number: CECHE01
All these models have 4 USB PORTS and have PS2 support
All other models have 2 USB PORTS and DO NOT HAVE PS2 Support.
I got this straight from Sony's PS3 website:

All the necessary solder points are in the tutorial. The second mod where the guy builds the switches into an intercooler is my personal favorite. Look at his tutorial. It is somewhere in the first few pages of this thread.
Now I have a few questions to those that have done this mod. Will this mod play homebrew discs? I have some discs compiled with SNEStation and what not. Do these custom made discs also work? Also ARmax is blacklisted. Can I do a swap from an original game to an ARMax disc and will it work? I wasnt at first, but now I am seriously interested in this mod seeing that my PS2 is now 2 years old and out of warranty. My hacked ps2 finally went to the grave.

The points we want are the +3.3v and relevant ground, on one of the removable media board. (preferably the CF slot)
So we can power the motor from an internal source, instead of having batteries connected.
My personal motive is that I want this mod to work without needing to worry about the power in the batteries and making it maintenance free.
Plus, I don't have access to any resistors for the 5v-3v divider some people use. But I don't like the idea of a permanent circuit across 2 points. I'm just not confident with the long-term effects on the PS3.
I used to be an electrician and have never trusted fitting a voltage divider of that design to a supply currently used by another component.
And, yes, I know the card reader is another component, but it doesn't use the supply if it has no card in it. And if earlier posts are correct, it's 3.3v anyway, and ready to use.
So, if anyone has pictures, diagrams, or anything to guide us. It'd be widely appreciated.
Or even modify the pictures linked on page 24 (I think) of this thread, to show us where to connect the wires.
Thanks again.

The pictures I mentioned before are from xenepp.
The average size is 3MB.
Here are links to them.
Card Reader Top
Card Reader Bottom
CF Card Slot
SD Card Slot
MS Card Slot
If someone could please indicate where to solder the wires on this PCB to get a 3 volt power supply, to power the motor.
I'm sure someone can answer this, you no longer need to open your own console to take the pictures, just download and edit these pictures.
I've searched all over the web, looking for the information I want, but this is the only place that came up with anything close to what I need.
Please, someone help. All I want to do is play my import of Kingdom Hearts RE: Chain of Memories my friend got me in New York, last week.
Edit:
PS. I know PS2 games are region coded. I bought SwapMagic from another friend. I've already tested it while the console was in pieces and it works.
Also I have my switches and wires fitted into a neat little box already set up. I just want the 3v internal supply so I can fit it all in one go.

Hi,
I try this switch mod with USA 60GB PS3 with firmware 2.53 and it's giving me a wrong disc error Message.
It's not loading PS2 backups when I change ps2 original to backup.
it tries to load the backup and then stop and message comes up wrong disc blah blah blah.
CAN SOMEBODY CONFIRM THAT SWITCH MOD WORKS WITH FIRMWARE 2.53 which is the the latest firmware or maybe I did something wrong.
Thanks guys

Is your PS2 original from the same region as the PS3?
This is required.
I can confirm it works fine on 2.53.

Yes, First I use PS2 original game from same region to load and then I use switch to swap original with backup of same region.
By the way, I used Tekken 5 backup. it gets to Nacmo sceen and then it stays on Namco logo forever.
I think it's the game I'm using are not compatibile.
I'm googling right now I let you know.
Thanks TSRPS3 for quick reply

If it goes to the Namco logo, it means that the swap trick did its work.
You need to use an original with the largest TOC possible (Devil May Cry original is amongst the best to boot everything).
Also, remember some PS3s do suck with PS2 backward compatibility so the game might also just not be natively supported on those ps3s)
(If you're using a launch 60Gb or 20Gb, you are fine for sure though).

For your information, there are some PS2 games that do not work correctly even on the launch models.
Even the launch 60gb and 20gb do not have full BC which I think is odd since they use hardware to emulate the PS2.
Sony could release an update to fix the issues but most likely they won't.

I managed to work out which points to solder on the SD card to get power for the motor,
Here's an extremely bad text diagram of the back of the slot.
________________
[ ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !!! ]
== +^^- =====
The 4th leg from left is positive and the 5th is negative.
Each "!" reprosents a "leg" on the card reader.
This is looking from the back of the card, as if behind the PS3.
Here's a picture for reference.
http://videoff7.free.fr/IMG_0573.jpg
Ignore the board, and only look at the legs from the reader.
REMEMBER!: Going from left to right: 4th is "+", 5th is "-".
It only works when there's a card in the slot. But it at least works.
Don't know why and don't care, because I realized something; the card reader has no power in PS2 mode. So I can't use SwapMagic and you can't use multi disc games that require you to change discs while running.
This got me thinking of an alternative, always active power source.
What about the PS3s power LEDs?
Granted they are tiny, but the green one is always on. So if anyone can find out what voltage they run on, it could be a possibility to use that as the power source.

you guys which original games is best to boot ps2 backups.
I tried original PS2 games
1 Grand Turismo 3 (boots backups Tenchu Wrath & Bloody Raor 4 Only)
2 Need For Speed Underground (same as above)
3 Suzuki TT Super Bikes (boots backups Tenchu Wrath Only)
4 Madden NFL 06 (Not booting any game)
I can NOT boot following backups with any of my above Original games.
1 Marvel vs Capcom 2
2 Burnout Dominator

ANY COMMENTS FROM ANYBODY WOULD BE HIGHLY APPRECIATED (and don't foget it's for a good cause ! ! ! :)

Have you checked them against the backwards compatibility lists?
Google PS3 Compatibility, and look at the status of the games you're trying to play.
Because if the PS3 can't play it as an original, chances are it won't play as a back-up or copy.
Also, if possible try the mentioned games in a chipped PS2 or using Swap Magic, just to see if they are "good" burns, and not duds. If they don't boot on a PS2, chances are they're bad burns. If they do, I'd say they're just not compatible with the PS3.
Hope this helps.

I took the liberty of checking those games and only Soul Caliber III and Street Fighter EX 3 have issues on the PS3. Street Fighter EX 3 only has problem on the 80gb model but should work fine on the 20/60GB model.

Thanks for this...I can use this...but i didnt know the sd card reader doesnt work in pS2 mode, now im debating doing the internal power source mod all over again......DAMN!!!!!! might have to stick to the old batteries....

Are you sure your booting game has the biggest TOC size?
cause I checked tekken 5 is 4,17 GB and Gran Turismo 3 is only 3.43GB
So it should be impossible to load tekken 5 from gran turismo 3
Here is an TOC list: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/182717
To be able to boot tekken 5 you need to have an original with TOC size bigger than 4,17 GB. So you better buy one game with a big TOC size to boot everything (from DVD 5 toc list off coarse)

I'm just glad someone understood it.
I'm disappointed to. Especially as I think SwapMagic turns off the laser making it safer for swaping (the disc still spins slow though), cutting out having to wait for the PS3 to stop spinning on it's own. I also didn't know about the reader turning off, not until I had finished.
As for batteries, I was thinking;
You can buy Wii battery packs with USB charging stations. USB is 5 volts, but the batteries are 3 volts so (as the controller runs off 2x AA).
So, perhaps we could use a USB or other known 5 volt supply to power a dismantled Wii battery charger, connected to the rechargeable battery that comes with it.
This would allow us to power the motor with the needed 3 volts, but also, if the supply we use does turn off in PS2 mode (like the card reader), we would still have power.
Just something to think about.
Especially as I think you can pick up Wii charging kits for around £7 in the UK.
I have a charger, but the battery is dead. Still, I think I might experiment with it.

Not at all, SwapMagic does absolutely nothing good on ps3, it doesn't stop the laser and is so poorly pressed / manufactured that it will only increase the chance of the laser getting fucked up.
Stay away from this horrible product imho.

My word! Sounds like you got burned bad by a defective product.
Granted, the discs do have a "cheap" look about them. But it's a readable DVD and/or CD.
And it's a universal TOC, so can be used for most games.
The key word being "most". Personally I haven't heard of any that don't work from the original owner of my copy, but the instructions do have a section on using alternative TOCs.
As for extra risk of damage, I'd put those fears to rest. People have used SwapMagic for years on PS2, and I haven't heard of anyone having damage to the laser from it.
Granted the old PS2s tray motors could be damaged by forcing from the slide tool. But we're not doing that on the PS3.
Since I've only used it while my PS3 is open. I can see what's going on and the disc does slow down to an idle spin, but when I take the disc away, I didn't see the laser try and look for the disc. Although the motor still does try revving up.

you cant use the original power wires, cause the original power wires only give electricity when you press eject button.
I used my card reader for it, thought the pictures of where to connect wires to card reader are deleted.
