This depends what frame rate you're willing to put up with. For some gamers it's higher than for others. To achieve a reasonably fluid picture (30fps or above almost all the time) you're probably looking at:
1024x768: High
1280x800: Medium
1280x1024: Medium

Both of those cards are worse than the 3850.

The X1950XTX is comparable in performance to the HD3850. I manage to play Crysis at a resolution of 1280 x 800 on high at a playable frame rate so I don't think you should have any trouble yourself.

Actually the 3850 is quite a bit better than that. I play at 1280x1024 on High and I have always had a smooth framerate. I have the 256MB version though, so with a 512 you might even get a better framerate.

The HD3850 is better than the X1950XT-X. Less memory, so at higher resolutions you may struggle, but buy the 512MB version and it's certainly a much better card.
Agreed on the 8600s, they're much slower than the HD3850.
As for Anti-Aliasing, it doesn't work in Crysis, but in pretty much any other game it's a feature worth using. I tend to set it to 4x - 2x doesn't make enough of a difference, 6x doesn't look much better than 4x. The performance impact of AA is quite high though, so watch out for that one.

It will but not on high settings. I suggest you use DX9 as DX10 is not all that's it's put up to be.

Er, no you can't. Not without some impressive coding skills, and I mean really impressive. XP is DX9 only now.

Well there are "hacks" out there which involve modifying the cvar files in the Crysis game directory to add DX10 effects in Crysis - but that's the only game that you can "cheat" to have DX10 in XP I believe.

You might enable some DX10 effects in XP, but XP can NOT do DX10.

that was becasue they were onfact "locked" DX9 featues on crysis.

DX10 is a hardware as well as software. thats why the older gen cant run it.

That depends, you'll get better detail but until DX10.1 comes out you won't have anti-aliasing, which IMO is quite an important graphical feature. Personally I'd stick with windows XP and DX9 until 10.1 starts being used then upgrade your OS. Avoid Vista for as long as you can.

but the higher res you play, the less AA if any as all you need.

I play a lot of games at 2560x1600, even at that resolution, I still want AA. The resolution may have increased, but the number of pixels per square inch hasn't actually changed much, so Anti-Aliasing is no less useful.

yeah, but you wont need it asmuch as if you were gamign at 1023x786.

imagine a 20"screen with 2560x1600. no AA needed at all :D
