ps2 not reading ps1 games

I just received a modded ps2 system with dsm3 chip in it. So far the ps2 backups have worked fine. When i tried ps1 backups they didnt work at all no matter what disc color. Some games were even burned on verbatim disc that used to work fine on my modded ps1 system. So then i tried playing regular ps1 games that i have. None of them worked. When i put the disc in the browser comes up and in the upper right hand corner it reads "PS2" and the upper left hand corner it reads "Playstation 2 disc" in yellow. Sometime it even allows me to triangle for cd playback but when when i hit it it seems like it playin songs but theres no sound. Is this a bad laser or something else all together? He gave me a dsm3 disc. I tried to put that in but every time I put it in it saids install failed and then wants to go back to the browser.
