Well...
Eventually it is going to become very hard to find x4 discs. Stores are just blowing them out like the plague, so yes getting the upgrade disc in for future use would probably be smart.
However, while the x4 discs are ridiculously low in price and we are talking about low priced good media, the best bet is to buy as much x4 as you can now and avoid the upgrading of your unit.
By all means order your upgrade disc just do not install yet.
By the way, I just copped a cake box of 50 x4 Spin-X DVD's at OfficeMax for 12 bucks. These are top of the line Moser Baer DVD's with the MBI 01RG20 code (Verbatim/MBI Code).
I just tried one out and it works great in the Emerson!
These discs are blow-out clearance jobs. Find them on the OfficeMax Website. The supplies are limited, but for 24 cents a piece get them while you can!

Budman...
Did you get the upgrade disc from funai or did you burn one from the net?
If it was from the net it could be bad or incorrect upgrade data. It sounds more to me like a power surge may have messed up you unit.
The only thing that the upgrade disc does is put code into your drive that allows x8 discs. The upgade would not wipe out x4 data.
Hmmm...this is why I have not installed that upgrade disc yet. I just continue to buy as much x4 discs that I can.
Sorry that you are having this issue.
Hi GregRod,
I got the upgrade disc from Funai. I called and they said to reinstall it and it is still having the same problem. I haven't called them back yet, they will say take it to a service center I am sure. I have it hooked up to a surge protector, but not sure how good they work. There was a low power surge a few weeks ago , not sure if that is the problem or not. Thanks for replying.
By the way I do have the CT-2, works great. I think the only diffrence in the ct-1 and ct-2 is that the ct-2 has a S-Video in and out, but not 100% because I have not tried the CT-1.
If you can think of anything let me know.
Thanks,
Budman28

No motorcyc......Component & RCA cables can not be inter changed..They are not the same.
and on the EWR10D4 Component video is for output only.
I use the s-Video for input, My Cable box has S-Video out, this hooks to the EWR10D4's S-Video input.
Be sure to tell yor DVD REC witch imputs to use.
If using Component Video for output I will sugjest the monster Brand as they are of better quality than the cheaper brands.

Was in WalMart yesterday. The Emerson EWR20V4 recorders now say on the box that they record on DVD-R up to 8x, so looks like the ones now in production have the new firmware.
Also the EWR10D4 machines were on the CLEARANCE rack.

Thanks for all the info (and the humorous responses) but I still have a problem with my recorder.
I recorded a couple of shows on one DVD-RW in VR mode. edited out all of the comercials and set chapter points. That was the easy part :)
now I want to rip the shows to create season discs of each show, but my programs don't read the VR discs. I did find ULead's DVD Movie Factory will read the VR mode, but it won't rip copy protected discs.
DeCSS and DVD Decryptor don't recognize the VR format. Does anyone know of a program that will? or am I up the fecal matter estuary without a rowing device?

b_kanobe,
The recorded material made on the Emerson may not (most likely) be able to be read on a computer burner. Especially a VR burned RW.
So yes, start forget the paddles and start swimming....LOL!

Hi,
This last week I purchased Sony DVD-RW 1x-2x from Staples. The pack of 25 was $15. They have an orange label and are on a spindle without cases. I used one last night and it worked great!

Sony DVD-RW 1x-2x worked great?
Funai customer service stated not to use Sony DVD's as they do not work well in the EWR10D4.
Go figure!

well, guess I'll have to wait for the re-runs.
I forgot to mention, I'm using Taiyo Yuden 4x DVD-R from www.meritline.com and Maxell DVD-RW yellow labels (I believe they're 4x). The -r's have made great videos and all the players in my house can read them just fine (yay). as for the -rw's, only my pc's can read them (except for the one made in VR mode, oh well).

Hmmm,
Maxell DVD-RW 4x do not work in the Emerson? Are you sure they are 4x?
I think the yellow tops are 1x-2x. At least mine are.
Everyone loves Yudens. I've not used those before. I use a cross from good names (Maxell, Verbatim, TDK, Imation) to el cheapo (Comp USA, Khypermedia) DVD-R.
Haven't a problem with any of them.
I think because set tops (EWR10d4) are standalones and only burn at a max of 2x we will get good burns on practically any type of media.(except Memorex-NOT RECOMMENDED!)
Its the Computer Burners with different write strategies and folks who burn at higher speeds, which is not recommended, end up with coasters.
I will admit that some of the Comp Usa discs are crap though. (Princo's)
The AML branded Comp USA 4x are decent in these units.

Hey, I just put the Emerson DVD Recorder, EWR10D4 on layaway at Walmart. I was wondering, if anyone has this... could you tell me, since it's not written on the box, does it work like a VCR? Can you put a disk in and have it record say a program at 4pm then annother one at 7pm and one at 10pm etc. More than once,on the same disc, without over-writing, until the disc's total capacity is reached? Or, is it a one shot deal; One record, one disc? I would really appreciate an answer to this if anyone knows. Thank you!

I tried this before but got no responses...
What types of media are you using in your Emerson? What was good?
What down right Stinks?
Of the brands I've used (Imation, Verbatim Digital Movie, Khypermedia(TTG01 or TDK made), Comp USA (AML), Maxell) all have worked without a problem.
Care to share your experiences?

I've had nothing but good results with Verbatim. I've never tried Sony in my Emerson as Funai said it did not work well. Also, Memorex is supposed to not work in this unit as well.
Plus no one has good things to say about Memorex.
Booser, do you own an Emerson or are you just killing time, especially with the "Memorex is the best" remark.

Hi primanox,
The answer to your ? is yes. You can record mutiple times on one disc. The first will be title 1 than title 2 and so on.
Hi Gregrod,
When mine was working. I used Maxell, BeAll, Fuji, and TDK. All worked great. I even used Prodisc, until everybody said they were junk. I used Sony DVD-R's for a short time, but had problems with the disc. All other's I named work great.

GregRod:
Memorex is great. I stopped buying Verbatim because I've had nothing but problems with them. Memorex dvd-rs last forever. My DVD burner loves them, my dvd rom drives love them, and yes, my ewr10d4 loves them. I have never had any problems with them and highly recommend them to any and everybody.
Don't read into any of they bs that memorex doesn't work well in this unit. I've used probably more than I would like to count in the unit and have never had a problem (use with 8x firmware upgrade and 8x media).

Thanks Budman..your Ewr10d4 died after the upgrade?
Booser,
I stayed away from the Memorex mainly because when I first got the unit Funai said don't use them. I have the upgrade for 8x but because there has been so many people with issues with the upgrade I will not do it. I just copped a crazy amount of 4x media.
The Verbatim Digital Movies work very good in the Emerson. Your burner may not like them but them Emerson does. I bought them a few weeks ago at Circuit. 6.99 for a 25 pack and 4.99 for 10 pack in cases. Work like a charm.
When I get the courage to do the upgrade (well after I finish with my 4x media) I will try the Memorex.
Yes everyone hates CMC MAG and loves Verbs and TY's like its the only media going.
Thats why I started this thread. There has got to be more good media that we can use other than TY's and Verbs.
Thanks...

Anyone having a problem pausing commercials in the vcr to dvd mode? The pause button will work in plain vcr mode but not when putting it on dvd. I've had this unit for a month and I still got to call the company for a firmware update. It's very hard to find 4x dvds in stores I have to order 4x online.

One more question. The firmware can't be downloaded can it? I hate talking on the phone to companies. Always put you on hold.
Thanks.
