Greg...the "update from the net" is an exact rip of the "FREE" disc from Funai(it is specifically stated that it is for the EWR-10D4),it can however be used on other models if you do some research. I posted it myself after testing it and am still trouble free burning any media (1x-8x).I posted it after reading several posts about Funai either taking a really long time(2+weeks) or not even sending the "FREE" Disc at all.If you actually trust corporations more than the free-sharing internet, you are probably affiliated with them somehow, why are you even here? I know quite a few "lazy, irresponsible people" who are now happily burning along at with 8x media with only a simple click of a mouse.

No, I am not affiliated with Funai. I am just a patient person who would rather get a direct product from the manufacturer rather than a post from the net.
Also, Tanooki if you took the time to read my posts you will understand that there are "TWO" upgrades for these models. While you are correct that this upgrade will work in the EWR10d4 and the EWR20v4, if you use 1 of the 2 that is not correct for your unit it will fry the unit. Had you called Funai and walked through the process to receive your disc they would have told you that or maybe you did but didn't listen. (thats why they asked you to verify your model by the punching the code in on your model before they sent it)
You researched the net, wow thats great, but you never called Funai to find more info. You trusted the corporation enough to buy its product but were to "lazy" to make a call.
As for it taking two weeks to get an upgrade, perhaps there were some folks that it took that long to get it. My experience was 5-7 days as was many others if you read the posts associated with this thread.
So, great glad you posted a direct rip of "ONE" of the upgrades, however, to have it posted telling people that this one will work on all models is not true, and will cause damage to 50% of those who use it.
Get your facts straight before you speak kid!
Like I said, if your download works for people great more power to them, but a simple phone call and patience will ensure the right upgrade. Also, who cares if it takes two weeks. If you paid 150-200 bucks for a product why chance it. If it doesn't work after you get the upgrade from Funai you have recourse to get it fixed. If you download from the net and Funai has no record that you got the download from them you void any recourse and you will either have to throw out your recorder or pay to have it fixed yourself.
So, if folks would rather download go ahead.
I come here to educate and learn just like everyone else. I've had my emerson for a long time and have learned the best ways to use it for me. Why not share that with others?
Don't bash me because I take correct measures with my product.
And yes, it is irresponsible and lazy to take a misc. download from the net. Especially from a Newbie that doesn't have all the facts.
Just my opinion....
Greg

I update firmware from the net all the time. Go to any computer manufacturer and you will find updates for firmware to download. Of course I have to know my model number matches the update I download, just as I would with the Emerson update. No one made you the "expert" so quit putting people down for doing things their way.

GaryClay..
You have it all wrong.
First I am no expert. I just have the unit like everyone else. I do know for a fact that there are two upgrades for this machine.
When you do the CM Skip to get to the code, you will find the code starts with some letters. Well the two upgrades correspond to these codes. If lets say a person upgrades their emerson with the updgade for the wrong code then you end up frying your unit.
I know this because the Funai rep told me.
So, I am pointing out this fact because I wouldn't want to see more people kill their machine.
Like I said, if you wanna believe that this misc download will work on all units go ahead.
I download updates (from reliable sources all the time too) however, when I know that "ONE" download will not work for all of these units then why shouldn't I tell people.
You make a good point, You download from the manufacturer. Isn't that the same thing I am saying? Get the upgrade from Emerson. Last time I checked Tanooki was not emerson.
I ended my comment with "My Opinion".
Whatever people. Do what you want.
Read this thread thoughly and you will see it riddled with people who have upgraded fromt he the net and now they have fried units, recording that does not start right away to people who were lucky and their units work fine.
As for the model, I am not talking about the model number. There is a code inside the machine that you must get. Model and this code are two different things.

Good post.
I burn and keep my master tapes. I will not throw mine out until we see what is going to happen to these burned DVD's.

Greg,I am not a "kid". You maybe need to quit being such a pussy and use your brain instead of having some worthless multi-billion dollar company (tech support is who you speak to and they are not even as bright as say...you)holding your hand all the time. I tried the update on my unit before I posted it,and I have yet to see one person complain about the so called "frying" of their machine. You need to go fuck yourself and quit posting here, nobody likes a bitch to the establishment.

Tanooki..
Do you read?
Like I said, read the posts associated with this thread. There are many people who have used "a download" from the net and there units have developed problems.
Also, call me whatever you want, but if tech support says there are two different upgrades for the ewr10d4 that means 1 does not work for all.
I do not work for Funai, but I am smart enough to know that your download is a dis service to ewr10d4 users "if you are telling them that your rip works on all units".
If you don't believe me then use your brain and call Funai and ask them yourself.
Worthless billion dollar company? You didn't mind giving them some money..LOL!
Ok...I called back for you. There are two versions of the upgrade. Version 1 and Version 1.5. If your version is 1 and you upgrade with version 1.5 or vice versa you can cause damage to your unit.
Call 1-800-605-8453 and ask them yourself.
Ps. by the way, I will not report you for abusive language. Now if I did that would be the real beeoch move!

So far I have tried the Maxells (8x) and they work great. They load faster too.
I just got the Memorexs I ordered from CompUSA. What should I do with them? Send them back? They are made in Taiwan... does that mean anything?

Memorex made in Taiwan means CMC Magnetics made them for Memorex. Memorex does not make their DVD's they outsource them.
It is my understanding that the Memorex 16x media is decent but the Memorex 4x and 8x are garbage.
I'd send them back and stick with the Memorex "Made in Japan" media.
If you have Comp USA near you, I think you can simply take them to the nearest store and get your money back.

I will probably just send them back.
On the DVD vs. tape thing... I am now re-recording the most important stuff to tape. I do still have some master tapes I didn't throw out. I thought (assumed) that recording to DVD was going to indefinetly preserve my stuff. Also it would save so much room. I should have done my homework. I wonder how many other saps out there assumed the same and have put precious memories onto junk media that will not last the year?

I haven't done the upgrade yet but I was wondering if the firmware process is the same way for everyone. I have the upgrade from the company. I know it says how somewhere in this thread but just in case the company tells me I waited to long to upgrade and they won't tell me how if someone can please tell how here. Thanks.

I called there 1-800 number and the lady told me that yes it will be off and she said I would seguest to hit the record earlier before hitting play on the other unit if I was dubbing. lol I didnt even mention anything about dubbing.

Personally I haven't found the delay a big deal. I don't believe mine is quite five seconds either. I just make an allowance for it.
I edited a movie last night after recording using the vr mode on a rw disc and it was great. That's a feature I had not tried yet. It is wonderful to be able to edit out all the commercials. I thought the video quality was excellent as well. I will close the rw disc and then record it to -r disc (I can then reuse the rw one). I'm glad that feature is so easy to use.

I'll probably do the upgrade by the end of the week when I don't record as much. I always record a minute before a show starts anyway in case it starts early and end it a minute ahead. I'm going to do the upgrade according to what was said here
. Power on your Recorder.
5. On your remote control; Press the "CM SKIP" button at the bottom of the remote followed by the numbers: 6, 5, 4. (Do this as rapidly as possible)
6. A screen will appear telling you to insert the upgrade disk. (Thats the disk you just burned)
7. Put the disk in, close the tray and the Recorder will begin to start the upgrade. The display on the front will start counting down and the upgrade will take about 3 minutes. *** DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING UNTIL IT FINISHES UPGRADING THE FIRMWARE ***
8. When the counter on the front of the Recorder reaches 0, the screen with tell you that it has finished upgrading the firmware and THEN THE RECORDER WILL AUTOMATICALLY EJECT THE DISK.
9. Take out the disk and then turn off the power for about 20 seconds.
10. Power on the Recorder and if you followed the instructions above, then you SHOULD be able to burn 8x DVD-R's. (NOTE: This upgrade WON'T change anything on DVD-RW's. You still CAN'T use DVD-RW Ver 1.2 /2-4x CPRM compatible or Above.)
